best burger in town. my girlfriend and i went to zip's on a sunday afternoon and had to wait about 15 minutes, but i would have waited for an hour and 15 minutes for this food. the service was fantastic and blows the other "burger joints" in the area out of the water! the best part, it doesn't cost $14 for a burger and fries!

i went with the chicken salad sandwich ($6.00) and a side of onion rings ($3.25). the size of the sandwich was a little small, but the taste was great. though the real standout from my meal were the onion rings. these large slices of onion had a great tasting batter on them and were perfectly fried. i would definitely recommend these over the fries for just a dollar more. others in our group had zip burgers and they all seemed to enjoy them. overall i enjoyed the food that i ordered and i hope to go back to sample more of their bar food style offerings.

big mac-esque. i've tried their burgers twice. they're pretty rough and uninspired. the ambiance lives up to its reputation.

walked out before served!!. ok, i live four blocks away from zips so it makes sense to go there every now and again even if their food isnt all that special. however, last time i went the food never came out!!! i think we waited nearly 35 minutes at a very slow time of day for two burgers before calling it quits... in short this is the first time we have ever left a restaurant without food :) btw just because a burger joint has been around for 100 years doesnt make it the best!!!

i have been to zip's before. it's practically a requirement for cincinnati dining. the place has a lot of charm. it's definitely an old school bar that happens to serve a pretty good burger. i ordered the regular zip's burger and fries. it was pretty good. this would be most like a burger you would make at your house. or "house burger". flavor was good, cooked well and it was a pretty generous size. i like zip's beer selection and their other menu options are just as good. they make a really good chili here as well. stop in for a good burger and watch the little train go round and round the bar.

great burgers!. i love zip's! they have good burgers and fries and the burgers are a good size, not some beast that you either can't finish or leaves you feeling bloated. good atmosphere. it has a train that runs around the perimeter. only bad thing is it can get pretty popular and there's very little space to wait inside.

good place for a solid burger at a fair price. i've been to zip's a few times now and have found it to be consistently solid. the burgers are tasty, the prices are very reasonable, and i've never had to wait to get a seat. although its not anything you couldn't make at home, this is probably the best $6 burger you'll find in the city. there are better ones out there (terry's #1, honey #2) but if you're in mt. lookout and craving a burger, its a great option.

this place meets what i am after. so mostly dark like everyone says. i actually understand this. here is how i deal with the tight atmosphere and darkness. i sit at the bar. it is dark but at least you are at the bar...the guy who takes care of us is jim. the times we pick are during reds games. we usually get a cheesburger but i will say i have had the fish sandwich which is a huge fish filet and tiny bun (kind of weird) and chicken sandwich which was surprisingly good. salad comes with a dressing packet. chili is really good. onion rings are the best in town.

love this family-owned burger place! service and atmosphere are always great and the cheese burgers are very tasty! if you want a simple, "backyard cookout" burger that is served perfectly every time, then zips is where to go! i also recommend the chili cheese fries.

try the chili!. tasty burgers and delicious chili! atmosphere is a little dark and noisy and bar-like, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. it's definitely not the best burger i've ever had, but it's still pretty good.

good burger...but not a good experience...... zip's café is another stop on the cincinnati top burger tour, again post theater with one of my daughters. i know this place is legendary in the queen city, so we needed to see what all of the hoopla is about.

we stopped in on a late winter sunday afternoon (twilight - that fading light comes into play later). the restaurant was already packed, but unfortunately there is really nowhere to stand and wait. the tables are packed pretty tightly, and the small entryway doesn't allow passing bodies to go by each other without getting rather intimate. as it was only 10 degrees outside, waiting al fresco was not an attractive option. fortunately, a small, albeit wobbly, table for two opened up pretty quickly, without us having to undergo much "stranger rubbing" during the wait. immediately after squeezing in, the server approached us and asked if we were ready to order. unaware that the small menus were tucked in a holder on the table, we were not instantly ready. this apparently displeased our server. the restaurant was so dark at our table (there was no light at all along our row of tall tables - twilight, remember?), we almost could not read the menus. the only dim lights were along the wall next to the booths. it was awful. i always include a photo of the food if i can, but there was not enough light to do that, as i didn't have a flash. people waiting for a table were literally breathing down our necks. we ordered drinks, and looked at the limited menu. it's pretty much burgers, a handful of sandwiches, three salads and some sides.

we settled on two of the famous zip's cheeseburgers: mine with swiss cheese and a side of onion rings ($3.00 for the side), my daughter's also with swiss but with a side of fries ($2.00 more for these). the burgers come as they make them, approximately medium well to well, you can't get them made to order. the burgers arrived quickly, and they were hot. both were well seasoned, moist, and came on a honey-egg bun. my daughter was very impressed with the flavor on the first bite. this resulted in another "oh my god" moment from her. i thought the burger was good, but not up to arthur's, or incahoots by any means. the fries were good, but nothing extraordinary. the onion rings seemed homemade, and were actually quite good. they had a nice batter, and were good sized. our drinks were refilled promptly, without us having to ask.

so.....the atmosphere was definitely dive-like. we felt rushed and unappreciated by the staff, and the "hovering" waiting diners made us very uncomfortable (they were actually bumping into my daughters back as they stood there while we ate). it was dark and uninviting. wait staff seemed hurried, not unfriendly, but hustling to get people in and out as quickly as possible. on the upside....they were good burgers - like i make at home. they are simple, and that has it's own nice quality to it. the onion rings were good, but the prices were just ok. add cheese and fries, and this is a $7.00 burger - more than arthur's on any given sunday.

i may go back, we may try it again. perhaps if it were not so busy, and we were seated in a lit booth, and we didn't feel as rushed, it might be a better experience. based on the whole experience and not just the burger, i have to keep it at "i don't like it". but for now, is it a good burger? - yes. is it the best burger in cincinnati? - absolutely not.

the burgers are just one reason we go to zip's. the hospitality is the #1 reason!
