i have eaten at a lot of japanese restaurants and not all of them are perfect, and a lot of restaurants are slow getting your food ready. however it the first time i ever wrote my first bad review due to the service i received.

on a tuesday night, the restaurant is half empty and we wanted to order "take away." i entered and waited at the gate receptionist area – after waiting for quite a long time, nobody greeted me so i had to go in and chased down a waitress who has long braided hair. she seemed to be unhappy and directed me back to the gate and asked me to looked at the menu there. i did, and then she never came back to ask me what i wanted, so i had to walk in again to chase her and tell what i wanted to eat. after i made my order, she told me coldly “it has to be a 30-35 mins wait. we are busy today.” i left the restaurant and wandered around for 35 mins. of course, when i came back, the food wasn’t ready. she did not apologize or show any empathy, just telling me again that “we are busy” and “5 more mins.” of course it was much longer than 5 mins, and during the long wait, i was standing in their restaurant with a small kid, nobody told me that i could sit down or anything, and whenever i encountered this waitress with an inquiry look, she always paid me back with a nasty impatient expression. eventually, when i finally got my order, she emphasized again: “we are busy.”

during the wait, i decided to pay before my food arrived so i can save some time. when i was holding my receipt, waiting – i wanted to give it back to them after i got my food, a white waiter with glasses asked me: “may i have your receipt back?” i said i would give it back to him when i get my food, and then, quite astonishingly, he asked very arrogantly “madam, then, can i have the pen back?” when there are a lot of pens just on the desk in front of him. the moment when i handed the pen back to him, i was determined to write my first bad review, not because of the restaurant itself or the food quality but because of the two waitresses/waiter being such exhibitionists of rudeness.

 **************
after my bad review, the manager called the next day. he apologized and offered a refund, and since he wanted to make it right, i made this review a little less angry. i hate to let other people take the consequence of the rudeness of the two.

this a not your ordinary sushi bar! our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. the menu went beyond the americanized rolls (although they were on the menu) and not only honored traditional japanese dishes but were innovative, creative and delicious. feel completely comfortable putting yourself in the hands of the sushi chef and let him prepare you a sampling of his best - you will not regret it! i just wish we could pack the restaurant in our suitcases to bring it home with us.

my boyfriend and i moved to kentucky a few months ago, and we had been nervous about whether we'd find a sushi place we would like.
we are ecstatic we found this place! first off, the staff was so friendly and happy to answer our questions. the manager was even kind enough to share a last bottle of sake that had been discontinued and proved very tasty, made with pineapples actually grown in japan!
the calamari was best we'd had in a very long time, perfectly crispy with a large designer side of spacy mayo. the fried pork dumplings were very tasty, but the dipping sauce definitely was the finishing yummy touch, as it had a perfect balance of sweet and slight spicy. we ordered the seaweed salad to compliment our sushi, and it was fresh and perfectly balanced via sesame seed oil and seaweed. we also ordered 4 rolls plus their special of tuna belly sashimi. it was all so good! i only rated a 4.5 out of 5 because we like more choices for rolls, and we love seafood salad mix w spicy mayo as an optional topping. not all restaurants need to be exactly the same and we are still definitely coming back to this place!!! i'm going to be dreaming about that calamari for a long time.

we've been here several times over the last 5 months and i just can't say enough about it. first, the service has always been excellent! secondly, the food is so good and what's even better is their attention to detail on the dishes. the dragon roll is awesome and if you like spicy, their soup (not miso and i can't remember what it's called but you'll see it on the menu) is delicious!!
i will say, it is a little pricier then some places but you won't regret trying this place!

definitely a step up from kobe which was the sushi restaurant that previously occupied this location. the sushi seems fresher and the decor is a bit more upscale. i liked the previous owners but i think they were burnt out.
great lunch specials

i believe this space has been home to numerous restaurants in the past, and ... this place may fall victim to a similar fate. we were the only patrons on a saturday at 1:00 p.m. this place was good, and the service was friendly and attentive, but to be honest, there are simply better places to get sushi here in town: sugano, tomo, tachibana. i will likely return, but mainly out of convenience.

the sushi is delicious! the presentation is fun and creative. we had the atlantic roll, the rock and roll, and a spicy tuna roll. the spicy tuna roll was the best one i've ever had. can't wait to come back.

new york strip with soba noodles. the sweetness of the yaki soba noodles is 0erfect. i like to throw in some siracha along with it. to add a little heat to the sweet. and it is a killer dish. asuka, miyakos, or any other japanese restaurants in lexington honestly don't even compare to zen's food. the have fresh, and excellent quality everything from the salad to the sushi. their sushi chef was flown in from new york, and the man makes a masterpiece out of every dish he sends out. the kitchen chef/owner comes from florida and has been cooking for over ten years. this man also puts out art on a plate. this place has a wonderful staff that are all very passionate about what they do. if you haven't had a chance to try zen yet. i would recommend that you do. for a fun relaxed environment, with amazing food. this is the place to go. i hope everyone has found what i posted useful! seriously though it is amazing.

refreshing break from same old raw fish. first and foremost zen has fabulous food. this is a delightful change from the standard sushi menu, although standard fare is available their pan/asian american take on creative cooking was delicious.

be prepared for a young, new and inexperienced restauranteurs perspective of service.....this will
improve with time. and is far worth waiting for your tea or chopsticks for the tasty morsels that eventually arrive. the food makes malones and asuka pale by comparison. and i believe zen is less pricey than their lessor competitors.

i am a foodie and sushi guy... the flavor combos with jalapeño, sundried tomatoes, fresh ginger, honey and more will bring you back for more. typically, i judge sushi restaurants by the freshness and favors of less popular fish; their yellowtail and red snapper were fresh and delicious, a good sign. try it - you won't be disappointed!!!

bravo - welcome to lexington and we'll wait for the service to jel....it is only their third week.

the use of fresh ingredients is key to making a quality product. this place is fantastic. the rolls are well made and very creative. the dragon roll, the shumai, and the cowboy roll are real stand outs on this menu.
the balance between the beef and the hint of wasabi with the finish of the blue cheese is amazing.
