music venue -- billy the kid. we wanted to see billy the kid and the regulators last night at wooley bully's -- after a wild "gps ride" we found the place. even though i live up in this area (meaning anything outside of 2 miles from pittsburgh), the place is hidden and all away visitors should print a map, program a currently updated gps, and have a navigator. okay. that said.
we arrived at 10:30 pm, about a half hour after the band started. incidentally, this band did 3rd place in the memphis blue competition last year. third is absolutely huge. and they are friends with barbara blue of beale street, memphis -- a wonderful performer who has been a regular on the street for 10 years.
the entry way is tight and was jammed with people. we wiggled in a bit -- the band was playing. sound reinforcement in the venue is not first grade but more than adequate for an out of the way music/band venue. the stage is opposite the entry way. once inside we stood for a couple of songs, were offered the 2 spare bar stools available, and were nicely greeted by the bartender. with a little imagination you will feel how vibrant the steel valley was in the day, and the shift workers coming in after the grind of the mills.
since it appeared that it would take a long time to find a comfortable place to "be" we decided to leave, and embark on the reverse "gps trip from hell."
this is a small live music venue. if you want seats, let alonegoodseats, come at least an hour early, or an hour and a half on a friday. as a local pub, in the true old fashioned sense, this is a popular neighborhood hangout. staff was friendly as were many from the back of the room who tried to accommodate us.
we will go back again when there is a live music performance and.. yes, arrive much earlier, and then have the pizza that is widely discussed in the forum.
