so happy we found thisplacethanks to urbanspoon :) truly authentic japanese experience. almost all the customers were japanese eating many dishes we were not familiar with. not your typical trendy or mainstream japanese fare and definitely not one of those " sushi/thai/chinese" mutts that can't do anything right. we were visiting from out of town and wanted a goodplacefor a mother's day dinner. most places nearby were chain and fast food. thisplacewas amazing. had a special mom's day bento with over a dozen unique dishes to taste. everything was perfect. atmosphere, service, food, desert and all priced affordably. don't miss this gem when in the area.

a full service japanese restaurant. waraku has a virtue most foodies and/or bloggers in atlanta aren't appreciative of, the idea that a full blown traditional japanese dinner could be constructed from this menu. thisplacehas an 8 page menu, and it's not a collection of decatur and cobb county rolls. instead, every major cooking technique in shizuo tsuji's masterpiece "japanese cooking, a simple art" is represented. grilled foods, pan fried foods, steamed foods, simmered foods, salads, noodle dishes, pickles are all here. perhaps the only missing major component is nabemono, and nabemono requires such specialized staff to do right that very few restaurants try to do it anymore.

the trendy folk hang out at the midtown sushi houses and the occasional ramen-ya, and try and convince themselves they're seeing it all and know it all when it comes to japanese food. meanwhile, real japanese, and a somewhat more modest population will find this place, recognize waraku for the value it represents, and realize this is an inexpensive gem of an eatery on the edge of town.

joy!. waraku is an antidote to the chain restaurants and awful "new suburban" cuisine we suffer from living in this area, and we are thrilled to have discovered it! we enjoyed draft sapporo with our dinners of tempura shrimp rice bowl and eggplant simmer dish. miso soup was rich-flavored and green salads were fresh with tangy (not oily) dressing. the chef's choice of side was scrumptious ribs. my eggplant was to die for: carmelized goodness. dessert was a heavenly custard with zingy strawberry sauce on top. our server was friendly, attentive, and fun! we can't wait to come back and bring our friends. prices were super reasonable, too. what more could you ask for? terrific jazz/blues in the background as well. our first impression was that this is the kind ofplacewhere you could ask for a surprise from the menu and be sure that no matter what it was, it would be fresh, intriguing, and delicious! thank you, waraku! you are a beacon of hope in what sometimes seems to be a culinary wasteland.

quaint setting, great food. if you are into charming decor as well as good food, this is aplacefor you. not only is their sushi great but the hot foods are yummy as well. specifically, i just ate their tonkatsu and it was delicious - crispy but moist and tasty! what i enjoy the most is that waraku puts creative twists on some of the regular japanese cuisine without losing the traditional flavors. the friendly staff also make our out of the way trip worthwhile.
