rude waiter. we initially ordered masala dosai, medhu vada and idly. the sambhar in these dishes was ok; chutney was good. medhu vada and dosai came out really well but idly was not liked by my partner. my partner and i are indian and she felt she could make much better ones with lot less rawa than that was used in udupi's idly. here came the bad part midway through our dinner-- seems their coffee filter machine was broken the time we visited them. but that did not stop the waiter / manager-looking guy with a beard from taking the second leg of our order for a mysore "filter" coffee ( as advertised). well, right after that i had the need to confirm if they were gonna give me a coffee in traditional mysore/south karnataka style. halfway through my enquiry, the same guy interrupts me rather rudely (his exactly reply in the form of a question was "what do you mean by traditional?"), later explaining that the filter coffee cant be made in traditional style cause their coffee filter machine was broken and hey! he was not sorry about it. not sorry for almost selling me a different product than i asked for and not sorry for interrupting me! i am not sure if he thought i was making a very special accommodation request when i ordered something from the menu. if he thought so, he would be very wrong about it. consequently, he lost the business he could have had with us for the rest of the evening. we were going to order much more before this guy spoilt our dinner atmosphere-- our bill could have easily been double and we would have also left the place with twice the satisfaction (and twice the number of stars for them).

not all service was bad-- there was a girl who waited on us properly and took our initial orders of masala dosai, idly and medhu vada. we left a reasonable tip and we dearly hope all of it reaches the girl.

we went here on an afternoon in september of 2018 when we were in arizona for our labor day weekend trip. we were a group of 7 and it was open on a labor day monday which worked out perfectly for us. we didn't opt for the buffet, we were in mood for some south indian breakfast so we jumped right in and ordered a bunch of items from the menu. sambar was a major disappointment! good south indian food as there aren't many places like these serving udupi breakfast in the us.

must try:
idli manchurian
onion and chilli uttapam
gajar ka halwa with vanilla ice cream

udupi, famed for authentic indian food lives up to the name .the south and north indian dishes are tasty here .we had an assortment of dosas and idlis which tasted pretty good.the naans and the masalas were equally good and spicy .the service was friendly and the place is quite packed on weekends.the prices are reasonable and the quantities are quite okay.i want to come back and try the buffet here!

sorry, but not impressed by the food served. the items were not at all tasting well. may be i am from india that's the reason but have tried other indian restaurants in phoenix and they are better.

we had ordered uthappam and the dosa was sour which is a sign of batter going bad. secondly the dosa had some weird smell/flavour which is generally associated with stale grain used to prepare the batter. the chutney had no taste and so did sambar.

we ordered manchuri and that was also sour may be some sauce was overdone may be soya. the cauliflower flaurets were fried incomplete.

the restaurant is pricy as well for the quantity served.

the service was good and the staff was friendly and courteous which is the only good thing.

would like to try some other indian restaurants next time in phoenix. food quality needs to improve.

okay food but too pricey. had ordered dosa. would definitely say there are better places in tempe for dosa, such as chennai express, which has better sambhar and chutneys as well, that too at lower price.

this place is so good to eat a variety of indian dishes. i am not really knowledgeable of the culture but i definitely enjoyed their food. the place is very simple not very pretty outside or even inside really  yet  it is a place where the owner personally takes care of the clients , the young waiter is very attentive and that makes a huge difference i wish some " 5 star" restaurants had the kind and personal service udupi offers.  the young waiter is  quick to offer you more water, or asks is your food is to your satisfaction. they have wonderful indian paintings on the wall that transport you to those places. the buffet menu includes several  dishes to choose and  salad, two or three different types of rice , curry , dessert, different vegetarian dishes, and the flavors mmmm! some are more spicy than i would like but i still ate them and were wonderful ! they also bring to your table this special rolled bread with a small potato dish inside of it to accompany the food. i have seen customers ask for their dish to be heated up more or to make a special request and the staff promptly and happily goes to satisfy their customer. you feel at home in this restaurant. and the price ? very affordable to all for home made taste indian food. i go back over and over and over again.

good vegetarian south indian food. went there for lunch. the buffet included white rice, rasam, sambhar, dal, rajma, naan, vegetable side and dosa's to order. the food tasted great. however the dosa's were a little bland. but nice n thin and crispy. for dessert they have gulab jamun and kheer. met mr. vijay at the counter. very friendly and welcoming. great place to to satisfy your indian cravings.

favorite in phoenix metro!. amazing! i was blown away at the variety of perfectly-dialed flavors, especially in the sauces and chutneys. my friend doesn't like indian food & loved it. the gobi manchurian (cauliflower that puts buffalo wings to shame) is a must. my other favorite are the dosai's, i've had a few types (spinach, potato & mysore hot chutney which you should try on the side, it's a very intense slow building sweat but incredible) they're all tasty and come with delicious sambar lentil soup. i recommend the assorted appetizer just for the sauces (pickled chili chutney, tamarind sauce, coconut chutney). i could eat this for every meal, it's literally bliss food! i haven't done the buffet but my brother said it's a trade off, can't take home leftovers but more variety to try. i was surprised most of the dishes have no animal products. more oily and salty than i like to eat but worth it.

phenomenal food and service! traveling through arizona and glade i found this gem. extensive menu, north and south indian food with traditional deserts. owner was there and observant to customer. wait staff was exceptional with high energy. the chef was making multiple rounds to all tables and provided recommendations when asked. they were non imposing and i chilled on my meal and cup of chai for three hours. an overall great restaurant experience!

great vegetarian indian buffet. we have always had good service. some of the dishes are much more spicy than others. if you love spicy food, this is a great place. if you don't, you may want to taste small amounts before loading your plate up. we love their masala tofu and the cubed spiced potatoes( i can't remember the indian name, sorry!!) also, they do change the menu and the buffet is more on the weekends, just fyi.

outstanding indian veg. my daughter found udupi cafe nearby her spanish language school in tempe and thank goodness she did. i had nearly given up finding really good indian food in phoenix. i haven't eaten at udupi- having had take-out 3 times so far in the past few weeks - and i can say that take-out is off the charts great. the food all contains an excellent spicing. it is the best new restaurant i've tried this year. i don't know any of the dish names because my daughter has done all the ordering, but i can say that the spicy red cauliflower dish is spectacular! everything we've had is excellent. walk don't run to udupi - highly recommended!
