impressive technique but underwhelming experience and overpriced. they were flat out and waiter was new, so that could have contributed to the experience although desserts just didn't come together for me either. the seaweed butter was excellent, the beef hadgoodflavours and the chicken was beautifully tender. thegooddoes slight outweigh the bad, enough to make me want to give it another go

while i appreciate the imposing rock walls, including inside the hollowed-out access tube you can view via the hydraulic glass elevator, i find myself relieved to leave mona and ascend the hill to the source. as a feminist, i kind of wish i hadn’t seen god’s parking space (reserved for david walsh) and the one next to it reserved for his partner, kirsha kaechele, dubbed “god’s mistress”. a few minutes later i’m seated in the dimly lit glass box restaurant staring at what i think look like a bunch of smooth white penises enclosed inside our table. the waiter tells us they’re the wedding rattles from walsh's wedding. i focus on my wine, trying not to wonder if the animal skins in the neighbouring tabletop were taken clan of the cave bear-style from their marital bed. and howgoodis wine? the list here is actually astonishing. we narrow down pages of excitement to the 2017 meadowbank chardonnay ($85) from the derwent valley. it's made by...

situated within the mona grounds, this restaurant have an amazing view overlooking tasmania and the river. a lot was put into the decor of this restaurant, each table have it's own decorations under the table glass. on the outside you have what they called live tables which have green plant on it! foodwise i have to say they're reallygoodexcept for the seafood hotpot. the dish was really bland. i would highly recommend the roasted eggplant, it has a mix of flavours that makes it so interesting!

another phenom food experience in tasmania.

after a wander through mona (what a museum and gallery) we headed to our lunch booking for hubs birthday.

tasmanian drinks to start followed by seriously great food.

seared scallops for my choice, torched miso & sake cured ocean trout for hubs.

for mains we got the striped trumpeter and the seafood hot pot, both delicious and generous.

dessert of panna cotta for me, and white chocolate mouse for hubs.

i finished with a verygoodpiccolo. they use villano coffee.

a restaurant with a view, service and quality local produce.

we had our lunch here when the shadows on mona was going on, at the communal table. the following day we had breakfast having stayed over at the mona pavilions.

lunch was a interesting affair being on the communal table. we had to watch out where we place our glasses and cutlery but that doesn't reduce the flavour of the entree and mains.

the weather was reallygoodas well and sitting in the shade with live music, nothing could beat that on a sunday afternoon!

recommended before or after a day of wandering in the mona!

when my husband and i visited hobart, we thought we’d give the source a go to make our mona visit more complete. as their website instructed, i had to call the restaurant to book a few days beforehand. although the process was smooth, i’d expected a modern fine dining restaurant at mona to have online reservation function on their website.

when we arrived on the sunday, we were greeted immediately by one of the waiters. service from the staff and restaurant manager were good, but you’d expect nothing less from a restaurant like this. they came to top up our water frequently which was good. when we mentioned that we were planning to do wine tasting after lunch so we were not ordering any drinks, the female manager very kindly informed us that make sure we mention that we dined at the source so that the tasting is complimentary. we didn’t feel pressured to order drinks at the restaurant which was nice, and certainly appreciated her telling us about the complimentary tasting as it wasn’t stated anywhere on mona’s website.

we were not very hungry so decided to just order 2 entrées and 1 main to share. the restaurant, like most fine dining restaurants in australia, offers complimentary bread, which is sourced from the famous pigeon whole bakery in hobart.

for our first entrée, we had the seared scallops, textures of cauliflower, tomato & chorizo. the scallops were delicious! they were cooked and seared really well and really left us wanting for more. the cauliflower and puree were also flavoursome, and mixed really well with tomato & chorizo. again, they tasted sogoodthat i think i wouldn’t mind getting another serve. the dish was well presented too. this was a great start to a meal and i’d really recommend this dish if you come here for lunch.

for our second entrée, we had the rabbit terrine, moorilla wine poached cherries, toast, leafy salad, capers, mustard. i had never tried rabbit terrine before so didn’t know what to expect. it was actually really nice and palatable. it tasted even better with a layer of mustard on top. we really enjoyed sharing it with some salad and bread. the wine poached cherries and didn’t leave any great impression though. the leafy salad was crunchy and the beetroot and capers really added extra texture and flavours to it. overall, it was a light and refreshing dish. if you are feeling a bit adventurous and open to something different, this is agoodone to try.

for our main course, we had the cannelloni filled with leafy greens and pine nuts in creamy cheese sauce. presentation was not that impressive and there just looked to be an excessive amount of creamy cheese sauce on the plate. there were three cannelloni in total. the cannelloni pastry tasted fresh and house-made, and there were plenty of green fillings inside. however, we both felt that the creamy cheese sauce was too creamy and rich. to be honest, after the two impressive entrées, this dish was a bit underwhelming. there were way too much cheesy sauce on it and that’s all you could taste. i knew it would be creamy, but i had expected the taste to be more sophisticated and didn’t expect the creaminess to be that rich. nevertheless, if you are a fan of some really creamy cheese sauce, you probably will love this dish.

overall, i’d still recommend dining here if you visit mona. it may not be for everyone, but it’s definitely a dining experience worth trying to complete your mona experience.

amazing!. sometimes you pay twice what you consider to be the maximum reasonable price for a restaurant, and the meal is only10% better than the norm. here we paid twice a reasonable maximum and were rewarded with an experience to die for!
we had the five-course degustation with wine for sunday lunch for my wife's 60th birthday. initially i was very disappointed (not to say pissed off) that they had lost our booking for this very special day, and could not accommodate us, but then after some pleading they (i.e. cameron) came throughgoodand gave us a wonderful table in the corner overlooking the bay. from that moment on it was perfect. they don't give you a menu, but ask what sorts of things you like and build your meal around that. i loved having someone else choosing my meals! my wife has quirky food preferences which they accommodated flawlessly. our food was mind-bogglingly inventive - novel combinations which i wouldn't dream would work but turned out to be perfectly matched with each other and with the chosen wine. and the wine! we started with a unusual boutique french champagne and ended with a 25-year-old gewurztraminer, and all stops in between equally interesting, except for a somewhat boring but inoffensive pinot noir. my wife, not a great wine drinker, almost didn't bother with the wine. that would have been such an enormous mistake because it's very much part of the degustation experience, at the end she agreed that she would have missed out on so much of the experience if she hadn't tried the matching wines. i loved the sommelier who really knew her stuff, and the waitress who was equally knowledgeable (and enthusiastic) about the food. she was also psychic - how come she knew my wife was dying for a chocolate dessert whereas i was looking for something fresh and fruity?
hats off, and thanks, to the staff who made it a very special day for us. now to pay off the second mortgage. but it was worth it!

had the degust menu here and it was mostlygoodfood. i did have an issue with under cooked duck which i felt was notgoodenough but other than that the rest of the meal was good. i was surprised that there was no red meat in the 7 courses! unless you refer to duck as red meat which i dont! the wine was well matched and the serving portions good. over all it was a nice meal and i would give them another go but they would want to nail it next time as for the price i would expect to walk away in amazement. 7/10 but only because of the nice wines!

sensational food. this a an excellent restaurant and well worth the visit (even if you don't go to mona). we went there for lunch before mona and had the chicken fricassee and the ocean trout. both meals were delicious; subtle flavours and beautifully presented. these meals were set on their own uniquely designed plates which was a nice touch. the head chef here is clearly world class. the staff were knowledgable and attentive and were able to provide somegoodadvice about wine selection (moorilla has some fabulous wines!). even the coffee was exceptional.

why sit in a warehouse space when you can dine in an architectural icon, with views across hobart! we will definitely come back.

fine fine food. we went to the source after 1.5hrs in the mona and were starving. ordered the ox tongue and crab ravioli as entrees and both were fresh and tasty. fricasse of chicken and mushroom (the most succulent chicken breast meat i've ever had) and the lyonnaise onion tart (something different for us) weregoodand the highlight was actually the coffee floating island dessert which offered depth and a perfect ending to a wonderful meal. while the place is not cheap it's worth the price it is demanding. and the whole experience together with the museum just made it extra special!

incredible!. there is no better way to describe this food than an absolutely blissful pampering of the taste buds.

i went here for lunch with my husband on our last day in tasmania, and came in expecting an expensive menu and small portion sizes which are often synonymous with fine dining. i was thrilled to see a menu with prices that are on par, if not cheaper than what i could find in hobart at any other nice restaurant for dinner.
then i started to think that perhaps the price of the meals reflected on the quantity, however my negativity was proved wrong yet again when we were presented with amazingly plated and quite substantial meals.

we both ordered the scotch fillet, and were told that due to the cooking process, it would be an approx wait of 30 minutes. this was fine for us as we ate the delicious house made bread and fresh churned butter.

when the scotch came out i was so thrilled. it didn't look like any scotch fillet i had ever seen. this cut was actually more like an enormous eye fillet, sitting on a bed of the creamiest and most delicate mashed potatoes i have ever had, and served with a generous, but not drowning quantity of red wine jus. gorgeous to stare at, but to take was so lovely that we had to both contain ourselves and stop from saying "oh my god", several times.

it was an outstanding meal, and the thought of the steak makes me want to go back there right now.

we have an unwritten rule that when we are at nice restaurants we try the dessert too.

i had the deconstructed tiramisu and my husband had the rhubarb dessert. i was too busy in food heaven eating my yummy dessert to stop and try his, and by the time i finished mine, i just wanted to keep the lovely flavours in my mouth so i didn't even try his.

bottom line. if you love food, and you love and appreciategoodquality and service; do yourself a big favour and have at least one meal at this amazing restaurant. it really did go above and beyond for us foodies.
