in appreciation. my recent interstate visit to mona was enriched by lunching at the source. staff were attentive and friendly and their wine advice worked well with the interesting flavour combinations i chose for entree and mains. art, music, food and wine work so well together.

stupendous. i am far from the arty type. avant-guard would not describe my artistic taste but mona would certainly fit that bill.
with tickets to the museum/art gallery organised and a 2 course lunch booked at "the source" the ferry trip was a relaxing way to approach the afternoon.
on arrival the restaurant was located and the decision made to lunch first before viewing the exhibits.
and that was when the delight commenced. the receptionist downstairs was warm in her welcome and gave no indication that the request for directions to the restaurant, up the stairs in front of us, was anything other than the most important request she had at that moment.
the sommelier lead the way to a primo positioned table in the front corner.
the house sparkling water was a delight as was the young waiter who offered a choice to upgrade the pre-booked two courses to a degustation of 3, 5, 7 or 9 courses.
with matched wines of course.
after choosing the 5 course degustation with matched wines the experience began with buffalo mozzarella foam covering heritage tomatoe with candied tomatoe, tomatoe water, olive oil and fresh basil leaves.
a triumph matched with a german riesling.
the second course was the best vegetarian dish i have ever had. butter beans with toasted almonds, white peach and a coriander foam was enhanced with a 100% rousanne. delicious.
the event continued with the dish of the day. a house smoked oyster with local sand crab served with foie gras and pedro xminenez jelly matched to an alsaction riesling was a hedonistic delight. i could have eaten the dish several times over.
squab breast with almond crumbs, spinach leaves and olive powder, and parsnip cream was bold and balanced with a robust dry and earthy italian barolo. manly food to finish the mains.
the desserts however served with a 13 year old sauternes were ethereal.
a sea of pistachio custard floated a cheesecake circle topped with fresh raspberries and reefed by chocolate praline and sweet crispbread with granulated dried pistachios and raspberries cascading down the side. a visual and taste extravaganza. the other desert of lime creme anglaise encased in green tea toffee and served with black sesame paste, green tea cake and chocolate drizzle was exotically delicious.
the combination of the faultless service by passionate knowledgeable staff and the food fit to be served in any top class restaurant in the world made it a memorable occasion.
it's worth an interstate trip to savour the experience.

with views over mona’s grounds and the derwent river, this is the perfect place to relax after a morning filled with art, or a special occasion. the food is french inspired, fine dining at its best and absolutely delicious.

lacks a little polish. overall we enjoyed our dinner at the source, but there are elements that let them down, in particular the service which was a little unorganised at times. as for the food, it was good, but not great.

mmmmmm breakfast. we had breakfast here before mona opened at 10am. delicious! had the usual delights but the presentation, service and the meals were exceptional. didn't need to eat again until an early dinner!

good but not great. came for lunch with 6 people. service was fantastic (very attentive and professional - we had a baby with us and were made feel welcome, the entire complex lost power for over an hour yet service remained professional) but the food was unimaginative and portions very small for the prices charged.

good food at source. didn't blow my mind but good. the waiters lack of knowledge on the winelist was disappointing "yeah. i reckon that's good" pretty laid back and not very well informed!

sensational food. this a an excellent restaurant and well worth the visit (even if you don't go to mona). we went there for lunch before mona and had the chicken fricassee and the ocean trout. both meals were delicious; subtle flavours and beautifully presented. these meals were set on their own uniquely designed plates which was a nice touch. the head chef here is clearly world class. the staff were knowledgable and attentive and were able to provide some good advice about wine selection (moorilla has some fabulous wines!). even the coffee was exceptional.

why sit in a warehouse space when you can dine in an architectural icon, with views across hobart! we will definitely come back.

fine fine food. we went to the source after 1.5hrs in the mona and were starving. ordered the ox tongue and crab ravioli as entrees and both were fresh and tasty. fricasse of chicken and mushroom (the most succulent chicken breast meat i've ever had) and the lyonnaise onion tart (something different for us) were good and the highlight was actually the coffee floating island dessert which offered depth and a perfect ending to a wonderful meal. while the place is not cheap it's worth the price it is demanding. and the whole experience together with the museum just made it extra special!

incredible!. there is no better way to describe this food than an absolutely blissful pampering of the taste buds.

i went here for lunch with my husband on our last day in tasmania, and came in expecting an expensive menu and small portion sizes which are often synonymous with fine dining. i was thrilled to see a menu with prices that are on par, if not cheaper than what i could find in hobart at any other nice restaurant for dinner.
then i started to think that perhaps the price of the meals reflected on the quantity, however my negativity was proved wrong yet again when we were presented with amazingly plated and quite substantial meals.

we both ordered the scotch fillet, and were told that due to the cooking process, it would be an approx wait of 30 minutes. this was fine for us as we ate the delicious house made bread and fresh churned butter.

when the scotch came out i was so thrilled. it didn't look like any scotch fillet i had ever seen. this cut was actually more like an enormous eye fillet, sitting on a bed of the creamiest and most delicate mashed potatoes i have ever had, and served with a generous, but not drowning quantity of red wine jus. gorgeous to stare at, but to take was so lovely that we had to both contain ourselves and stop from saying "oh my god", several times.

it was an outstanding meal, and the thought of the steak makes me want to go back there right now.

we have an unwritten rule that when we are at nice restaurants we try the dessert too.

i had the deconstructed tiramisu and my husband had the rhubarb dessert. i was too busy in food heaven eating my yummy dessert to stop and try his, and by the time i finished mine, i just wanted to keep the lovely flavours in my mouth so i didn't even try his.

bottom line. if you love food, and you love and appreciate good quality and service; do yourself a big favour and have at least one meal at this amazing restaurant. it really did go above and beyond for us foodies.

the source, mona. great food, but the service did not match what you would expect for the price you are paying for the food. if it was just about the food, then i would go again, but for the overall experience i won't be rushing back.

this was my (and j’s) first time having boudin blanc and if this is what i can expect everytime i will definitely order it again. it was smooth and creamy with a mild taste, and the tomato and beans worked beautifully with it.

we had a fantastic dinner here. impeccable service, beautiful and delicious food, great setting. recommended for a convivial and memorable meal with friends or family. they even ably accommodated one gluten free dinner amongst our group, without notice.
