nice place. i went on a date here with my boyfriend. came in and sat at the bar to wait for a table, which we had no problems with. once we sat at our table a few minutes into the meal we we unexpectedly moved to another table as more people were arriving to join the other tables to the right of us. again no problems as we understand that it's friday this place is busy. all in all we had a goodtimeand meals were good. we'll be back sometime soon for sure.

i went to the rook a couple of weeks ago. it was my firsttimethere and we went in the middle of an afternoon on a weekday so it was very quiet. i had the bison cheek sandwich and words cannot describe how amazing it was. the best sandwich i have ever had, honestly. my boyfriend had their blt, it was good but also also got fries with it and they were majorly over salted, probably to make you buy more drinks. over all, the food was great. the service was just okay and that's why i'm only giving the rook and raven a 4 star review. i would definitely recommend this place just for the food though!

tldr:
pros: options for dietary constraints, service is relatively fast even during high time, servers are laid back but still attentive, fairly decent prices on the "snacks" and alcohol

cons: very heavy handed on the salt with most dishes, uneven cooking for steaks, can be a bit loud during hightimeif you're looking for a romantic night (but i mean it's a pub so...)

whole review:
food (rate: 3/5)
i've been here 3-4 times already, and i've been fairly satisfied with their dishes (i've had the fish and chips, marinere mussels, cream of mushroom soup and their surf n' turf special). one thing i've found consistent across each visit is how heavy handed with the salt they were. i actually found that their fish and chips were a bit oily, and had a great crunchy texture on the outside. the mussels were cooked perfectly, and the sauce was fantastic -- not too heavy on the lemon, but just enough to give it a bright tang to the wine reduction. the only thing wrong with this dish was the amount of salt that they had in the sauce. i love me some salt, don't get me wrong -- but they're pretty heavy handed with it here. the same can be applied to the soup, but it had some great flavours in it.

*surf and turf special: i wanted to put this in its own category, just because i really loved it... but there were some issues. the steak; our table ordered 3 of the surf and turf special (char-rare, medium and medium-well). the char-rare came out beautifully, but the medium was done more like a char-rare and the medium-well was done more like a medium-rare. granted this was done during high time, however my family didn't have the heart to send it back to the kitchen and get it re-cooked when they were so busy, but certainly were not too happy with their cut.  the big problem with the steak was how uneven the seasoning was -- and when i mean un-even i mean one end of the steak was seasoned, and the other end was not. so basically you would be cutting into this steak and have over-salted meat for the first half of the steak, and then the second half is just... steak. the shrimp had a lot of salt and garlic on it, but the veggies that came with it were fine. baked potato... meh. it's a baked potato.

service (rate: 4/5)
pub service in general is my preferred style -- it's not in your face, and doesn't give off the feeling that they're tying absurdly hard for more tip. the server we had was well-versed in the selection of beers they had available, and had great advice on the best beers to go with which dish. surprisingly enough, high-time service still had impeccable attentiveness even though they were basically packed; i was extremely impressed!

atmosphere (3/5)
typical to a british-style pub, you see the typical dark wooded furniture, walls and floors. a tad bit dark in there, but i wasn't particularly bothered. it was just.. ordinary. so nothing much to comment on it. the music becomes fairly loud at night, so if you're looking for a quiet night out this probably isn't the place for you.

so we tried this restaurant for the firsttimethis evening. the food was good and pretty tasty. we came around 6 and were seated right away. the woman who greeted us was so friendly. our server on the other hand made us feel like attending to us was a chore and then another table came and she was super cheery. so that was pretty disappointing and all the reason for rating lower. back to the food though. i had the grilled sirloin with fries and it was good for the price. i quite enjoyed my meal. my friend had fish and chips and that was also very good. lastly my boyfriend had the pork belly main with potatoes and saskatoon berries and that was by far my favourite ! overall the food was good and the service was mediocre . we plan to return and hopefully the server in more pleasant this next time.

our firsttimehere was for lunch this week. i know this is a much loved saskatoon favourite and a well reviewed restaurant but... just not my cup of tea. call me simple and unrefined but there just wasn't much on the lunch menu that appealed to me. ended up having the pulled pork sandwich with fries. pulled pork was okay, just wish there wasn't soggy coleslaw put on top. not a fan of the homemade ketchup. the decor is very nice and the restaurant is well laid out. service was attentive. i don't wear a toque indoors, skinny jeans or have a beard so i understand i'm not the target demographic.

the rook and raven is a great place to eat supper! my chicken supreme was so delicious. the fig, chorizo, and goat cheese sauce are an ingenious combination! the fish and chips are also quite good. the cod has the best breading and is cooked to perfection. i love that there are interesting menu items, made with high quality ingredients, not just bar food like i expected. i definitely recommend this restaurant. just don't eat here if you're in a hurry or on atimeschedule, the food doesn't come out quickly.

the bartenders are very chatty which is nice and the servers are friendly but give off a decidedly busy air which is understandable since the onlytimethis place seems to be quiet is early afternoons.  it's very popular and the location makes it great for people watching both inside and out.  the big windows at the front are a favourite place to be in the summer.  that said the pricing is fairly high although the portions are not small.  they have a good though limited selection so there are not a lot of vegetarian options.  the pulled pork is always well flavoured.

good food - be aware it is 19+. i have had the burger and it was amazing. my husband had the pork belly and just loved it. he could hardly wait to come back and try the place again. went a differenttimefor appetizers - mostly enjoyed the poutine, but found it to be too salty - i wonder if there was a mistake because i (and my sister who was sharing it) have a very high tolerance for salt and find myself adding it to just about everything, but this was pushing it for both of us.

i am editing this review after posting earlier about my friend and me being turned away because she had a baby (who was sleeping). i received feedback from the establishment that because they are licensed first as a tavern, they cannot allow anyone under the age of 19 in the establishment or they will be fined. i think it's just a good heads up for people to know ahead of time. (it also would have been nice to be given that explanation by the individual who asked us to leave, as i think my friend and i are both reasonable people - and being given the explanation now, it makes complete sense).

i'm always impressed with the food at this place. everything i've eaten here is a little bit different, but very good! thistimei ordered the soup of the day: beef barely soup. it has an amazing smokey taste, a bit of cayenne spice i think, and some other flavours i can't quite place. it was pretty amazing though! and it comes with garlic bread. i recommend!

love this restaurant!! i've been here 3 times now and eachtimei've left after having a great experience! the service is always wonderful and the menu has so many delicious choices! plus they have some unique beers on tap and everything is reasonably priced! they don't take reservations which is tricky when you come with a large group but you can hang out at the bar while you wait and the staff does all they can to speed up your wait for you!! i can't wait to come back here again!

very poor service. i met my partner at the rook and raven over my lunch break. we showed up before the lunch rush. our server had somewhat negative attitude. as if we had somehow interrupted her day. it took sometimefor her to take our order. once she finally took the order it was more than 45 minutes for the food to come to the table. we ordered the pasta special and the turkey burger. neither should take 45 minutes to cook. she visited with friends and coworkers while we waited for our lunch. we finally asked her how much longer she thought it would take. she indicated it should be ready right away. she went to the kitchen and came out with our luke warm food. after we finished eating it took an additional 20 for her to ask how we would like our bill. another 20 minutes and she brought us the bill and said to let her know if we needed change or the debit machine. then she never came back. we went to the bar to pay. i'm should good would have been great if it was hot. but it wasn't. further it took 1 hour and 45 minutes to have lunch downtown. usually i enjoy the rook and raven. but today's bad service makes me apprehensive to return or recommend it to others.

we usually go to the rook for lunch but popped in for dinner instead last night. the norway lobster and calamari appy was good, maybe just a bit salty, but tasty. the bison short ribs were very good, leaner than beef ribs so it didn't seem like such a heavy plate going down. the pork belly was the hit of the night though - cooked perfectly and delectable with the saskatoon jam. we didn't really have room for dessert, but what the hell, we asked anyway - rice pudding with caramel sauce and smoky bacon. it was awesome! once we hit the gym and havetimeto work this one off we will be coming back for dinner again, and again.

almost always a quality, tasty meal and a pint. more importantly - the singletimeit was not great they took ownership of the issue immediately and solved it right away. quality place.
