my favorite restaurant ever. the pub is far and away my favorite restaurant. it's unique in every way. it's been around since long before i was born (since 1950). it's survived burning to the ground and once going out of business. through all of that nothing much has changed at all. one of the first unique things about the pub is the huge dining room. the slightly medieval themed room seats over 500 people at a time yet it's still quiet. i've never heard anything above a low murmur and there is always plenty of room to move around as you go to one of the twosaladbars.

speaking of thesaladbars, they are fantastic. they include blocks of cheese from which you can cut off slices, various kinds of cake breads (in case the delicious crusty bread on your table isn't enough for you) fruit, applesauce, along with a wide variety of salads andsaladingredients. however, i usually skip past most of this stuff and head right to the giant bowl of caesarsaladand pile my plate high. the pub's caesarsaladis one of the best i've had. the always freshsaladis made especially delicious by the plentiful anchovies scattered throughout.

the focal point of the dining room is the row of six coal fired ovens where chefs in big white hats turn out fantastic steaks. the pub has a fair number of entrees ranging from seafood to chicken, to all sorts of steaks. i, however, typically stick to the best filet mignon i've had at any restaurant. it's served with massive onion rings and a potato. i recommend the twice baked stuffed potato. i also recommend that you ask for some of their browned onions to go with your steak. they're free, but you have to ask for them. in another unique touch, your steak will arrive at your table on a cart to be taken from a heated tray and plated right at the table.

if you want something a little more unique, try my father's favorite, the carpetbagger. it's a filet spread with crabmeat and hollandaise sauce.

the only negative is the location. although, it's certainly never stopped me from going. the pub is located at the maze of an intersection that used to be airport circle.it might take you a few tries to get in the correct lane. of course, this should be no problem for a practiced new jersey driver.

old-school throwback. we were in the area, looking for a place for dinner. after doing a few searches, the pub offered what we were looking for (cow) and it was close where we were staying. getting to the restaurant is a bit tricky as the location is visible due to their huge sign but not easily accessed. upon arrival around 7p on a saturday night, the parking lot was very full which is always a good sign of a popular restaurant.

upon entering, the lighting is a bit dark but that is part of the theme of this restaurant - dim lights and heavy, dark wood beams creating a pub atmosphere. there were several other large parties waiting which gave concern that we'd wait for quite a while for seating. when we a table for 6, we heard 15-20 minutes which was shorter than expected.

after 15 minutes, we were summoned and seated in the vast dining room. the decor was more like an old-english banquet hall than a pub with high ceilings, more dark wood timbers and several medieval weapons displayed on the walls. the front of the dining room had 2saladbars on either side framing a partially open kitchen with several open ovens.

initial service was quick with bread/butter arriving as we were seated. our server took a few minutes to arrive and initially took drink orders while we reviewed the menu. once nicety is that the table had 2 pitchers of ice-water which allowed us to refill our own water glasses instead of waiting for a passing server. the menu is very extensive although it was apparent that the specialties involved prime rib and steaks.

there are 3 different prime rib cuts - manager's cut (small), prime rib (medium) and cattleman's cut (large) - i opted for the prime rib cooked medium with a baked potato. thesaladbar is included with all meals so we headed in that direction. the lettuce leaves were huge which was surprising. the toppings were a bit limited but there were an interesting variety of "salads" - rice salad, potato salad, pastasaladand cottage cheese with pineapple.

overall, thesaladwas good but not outstanding - then again, this is a steak house, saladis secondary. we finished our salads and waited 15-20 minutes for our entrees. fortunately we weren't in a rush so the delay allowed us to enjoy our salads with time to let it settle.

the prime rib arrived properly cooked (medium) with a pop-over and a baked potato. there was also a plastic container with what looked to be sour-cream - the waitress warned us this was horseradish cream but not before another diner started filling her baked potato with it. separately, the waitress delivered additional butter and sour cream for the baked potatoes.

the prime rib was excellent, served with the bone. it was tender and juicy although more au jus and real horseradish (not a sour-cream sauce) would have been appreciated. the pop-over was ok but with an enormous prime rib and a baked potato, the pop-over isn't necessary.

be forewarned that the portion size for the beef dishes is enormous - even the manager's cut is large enough to require a take-away box. this isn't necessarily a bad thing, just something to know beforehand.

when i'm in the area again, i'll certainly keep this restaurant in mind for a visit.

love this place!!. i heard about the pub my whole life, but have just been lucky enough to enjoy it in the last 3 years! i look forward to everytime we plan on going, as does my honeybunny which turned me onto the place and has taken me each time! we never look at the menu, we have our absolute favorites and have never been disappointed. they have the very best drinks, my choice is the frozen margheritas! filet mignon, yummy! bestsaladbar and a carrot cake to die for! now with that being said, since i am a weight watcher, plan your points low for 3 days after you eat there, preferably 3 days before your weigh in, and enjoy!!!!! life is too short to deprive yourself of this gem of a place!
