the mayfair

we have a regular monthly lunch for a group of ladies. the food is great, the service is great and the meals are all ready soon after we arrive, having preordered. the meals are large and a very reasonable price. the food is always fresh. i highly recommend eating here.

we went here for our friends birthday. at the same time they even had a comedy show. the drinks and food were quite nice. the staff was friendly and polite. they even let us party till late.

lots of seating and great pub/bar ambience. perfect bar meals/snack options. just a few crafts on tap however we really enjoyed black dogs ipa. was a bit steep at $12 a pint but service and staff was great.

easter holidays about so i thought i would bring the family here for lunch and to quench our thirst. we chose a table outside as it was a nice sunny day and wanted to enjoy a couple of cold drinks in the beautiful naki sun. the waitress was quick to bring our menus and take our drinks order. i already knew what i wanted as i usually get an erdinger whenever i come here, my wife had a export citrus and i ordered the boys an oj each. drinks came out nice and quick but my drink which usually gets served with slices of orange failed to do so....again. not that bothered though but if you have something you expect it to be consistent every time. our food order was taken and came out pretty quick. we ordered the boys the kid rock pizza. they seem to enjoy it with loads of meat and cheese. we ordered a large for them to share and there was more than enough with some left overs. we ordered the ribs with fries and wedges with bacon and cheese. the ribs were cooked well with the meat just falling off the bone and the sauce was thick and tangy and wedges were alright but just needed more sweet chilli. the place soon got a little busy
the 2 foh staff did well to cope with it.

this place is a concert hall come pub-bar. i imagine it was once housed the glitz and glory of the silver screens and stage productions.
tables out on the street front making a bar area. inside the front doors is a bit like siting in the alcove of a movie cinema still. feels a bit like a waiting room.
down a long hallway to the back is the concert hall and separate bar big enough to hold a couple of hundred people.
the menu is big and boasts all the bar classics and a rung of pizzas.
we ordered the beetroot salad which was shy on the beetroot and had that countdown packet salad mix taste to it.
the serving of ribs was adequate in size. stick pork ribs which melted of the bone with a finger sticky sauce.
and pizza. it was a bit of an abstract choice of pizza on our accord but it was good none the less. good base with enough topping and cheese not to complain about.
service was great. and food was delivered quick even though we were told there may be a little wait.
the drinks list is nothing to write home about but you'll definitely find something to swill.
good food, good price and value.
only gripe is the hired "one man band" who sat in the front banging "classics" from what felt like the early 1900s. painful.

well i don't know why i've not tried this place for food before now, we only went as somehwere else we'd plannned to go to was shut and were blown away by how nice the food was, seriously! we will deffo be going again, in fact looking forward to it...only lil gripe is please have the aioli seperate to the hot chips instead of put on them already :d

a colleague and i were in new plymouth for the day so we asked a passing local where to get lunch. they pointed to the mayfair and off we went. we weren't disappointed. friendly and prompt service, my fish n chips were fantastic - very crispy and meaty fish, big tasty and perfectly cooked chips and and an excellent salad to go with it....sam's beef burger was seriously large, and (he said) very flavoursome with lots of random tasty bits. all very good and an excellent coffee to finish. a very big bonus for our working lunch was the cafe's ultra-fast broadband service - good to see savvy business people installing this for customers. obviously a popular place with locals and on a perfect taranaki day it was an excellent choice.

what a surprise! the food is amazing! especially the pasta dishes. the pasta is freshly cooked and well seasoned! very nice and unexpected! everyone must go here.
i need to wright more words in order to be able to score five stars, so i will just say good good good good good good!

i'm surprised no one has posted a review on this restaurant as the food us usually outstanding. i have eaten here every regularly over the last 18 months (or thereabout) that the mayfair has been open. the beef and chicken burgers are great, so is the ravioli and the various all day breakfasts, all freshly cooked and very nicely presented. to be recommended.

the only reason for not giving them 5 stars is that on some occasions the service can be quite poor, some of the bar/waiting staff seem a little overindulgent in entertaining themselves instead of attending to the diners.
