best sandwiches in lancaster co. i have stopped at thomas campus grille (formerly thomas campus deli) several times over the past couple of years, and it is in my opinion the best sandwich shop in the county. originally being from the new york area, i have found the lack of quality italian-style subs in this area to be especially frustrating. thankfully i stumbled across thomas' one day, and found a glimmer of hope in the sea of lancaster county's bologna and american cheese laden "italian subs." their menu features an array of unique, high quality sub sandwiches that use a variety of proper italian ingredients such as fresh mozzarella (!), cappacollo, prosciutto, roasted red peppers, fresh basil, and balsamic vinaigrettes. all of their sandwiches are appropriately named after locations in the new york city area (don't worry, the cheesesteaks are named for philly!). i recommend the staten island which features prosciutto, hot cappacollo, hot sopressata, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, artichoke hearts, and vinaigrette. last time i was there i decided to try one of their regular cheese steaks -- onions, no sauce (who decided to add sauce in lancaster anyway?). i am normally not a cheesesteak person, but this one was far better than any i've tried in this area as they use fresh-cut ribeye as opposed to the greasy pre-cut 'steaks' used by most establishments. the difference is night and day. the menu also features a variety of burgers, wraps, regular hoagies, and salads. i recommend trying the hollywood salad, which features romaine lettuce, grilled chicken breast, dried cranberries, goat cheese, and poppyseed dressing -- when i tried this one, i asked them if they could put this onto a sub, which they were glad to accommodate. it was delicious, with a bold combination of flavors. i have yet to find a place in lancaster that makes better sandwiches. if you know of any, be sure to let me know! in the meantime, give thomas campus grille a try.
