every time i come to the bay area, mom makes me promise to eat seafood so she can have the vicarious experience of eating seafood in san francisco. on this trip, i honored mom's wish by visiting thefishmarket in santa clara. this chain has been a favorite of mine for many years, ever since they opened in palo alto many moons ago. i was disappointed to be asked by the host to wait for five minutes for a table even though almost all the tables were empty, so i ate at the oyster bar. the bartender quickly gave me some sourdough. doesn't it look great? it tasted great, too. i ordered grilled salmon for dinner. it was perfectly cooked with just a little bit of char. the cole slaw is of the creamy variety and very crunchy.

corvina seabass (dish review). corvina seabass is one of my favorite fish, regardless of price. it has a texture, flavor, and quality that can rival the best tuna or swordfish. price included, it takes the cake for greatest fillet (it tends to be vastly cheaper than most seabass or sportfish). unfortunately, this version of thefishmarket doesn't know how to cook it. my dish had a small, sad looking piece offishsurrounded by a field of rice and pile of carrots. the size wouldn't have been an issue had the meat not been so bland. half a lemon, sprinkle of cayenne, and handful of salt later, it was still almost inedible and extremely boring. though part of the problem was probably thefishitself (it seemed pretty old and wasn't a great cut), the overcooking didn't help. for $18, i expected way more.

fish market (seafood/american). thefishmarket, san jose's only seafood restaurant of merit, fails in santa clara. for some mysterious reason, the location in south sj blows this spot out of the water (pardon the pun). my main issue is the freshness of the fare. last trip out, the bread seemed stale and thefishwas bland, problems i've never noticed at the original market. one of the few aspects worse than the food was the service; having to wait on the waiter is never a positive sign. a half hour after being seated, my order was finally taken. that, simply, is far too long to keep a customer sitting unattended. to make matters worse, the restaurant was nearly empty on a midweek afternoon. to put it simply, if you want good seafood in the south bay, drive to a chinese restaurant or south to the realfishmarket.
