very disappointed with black olive. black olive came highly recommended from friends who frequently dine there when in baltimore. that was no our experience, we were extremely disappointed & felt they took advantage of us. portions were small & overpriced. the biggest surprise came with the bill, which listed charges for each my husband & myself for the st. peter's fish entree, which the waiter described as a 'preparation for 2' and which themenupriced at $32. no discussion that the entree charge for the dish was per person (a total of $64), although one fish would be prepared for 2. additionally, the 'gluten-free' crab cakes are served with a gluten side-dish and no other side dishes were available, we were told, except for fried potatoes. (we overheard other tables being offered a variety of vegetables as side dishes, after the fact). the waiter, efficient and pleasant, was not clear about the menu.
after paying for a dinner that included a bottle of wine, appetizers, entrees, coffee & desserts, no gesture was made by the management to address the oversight of the explanation of a $64 order of fish. no offer to adjust the bill or a complimentary dessert.

menu item: black olive special grill. if you've never eaten here before, this is a great way to start out. it has a great selection of their manymenuitems: lobster, grilled octopus salad, clams, sardines, crab cake, shrimp, mussels, stuffed calamari and scallop. i was insane enough to order this as my entree, what i didn't eat i took home and it lasted me two more meals!

menu item review: grilled octopus salad. this was incredibly tender, which is impressive. it takes hours of pounding and massaging octopus to get it this good. it's deliciously marinated, with fresh red onions and capers mixed in. the capers are an inspired addition. lovingly drizzled in a high quality olive oil. i am absolutely addicted to this dish.

terrible experience. below is the email i sent to black olive management after my terrible 40th b-day experience two weeks ago. my hope was that they'd take this opportunity to keep me as a customer. my email went without a response so i have therefore posted my account so that you can avoid the grief we had to endure:

"dear (manager),

last saturday, i dined at black olive and had a truly poor experience. my hope is that by sharing these events with you, as opposed to posting them online publicly, black olive management will see it fit to do right by my family.

let me start by saying that my wife and i dined at black olive once before, in september of 2011 to celebrate our 7th anniversary. the experience was sensational. not only did we find the food to be outstanding (i particularly enjoyed the octopus appetizer), but the attention and care that we received from our server was superlative. never before had i been invited to view the fish on ice prior to placing my order. furthermore, for my wife who is vegan, the extensivemenuoffered many meat and dairy-free options. there was an array of vegetables that she enjoyed, including a wonderful mushroom appetizer. and the kitchen was flexible and accommodating to ensure that every dish was something she could eat. for this and many other reasons, my wife and i ranked that meal as one of our best ever in baltimore.

so last month, when my aunt and uncle offered to take me and my wife (along with my parents) anywhere in baltimore to celebrate my 40th birthday, i chose the black olive. we arrived for our 8:00 pm reservations with the highest of expectations.

things went sour almost immediately. for starters, it was not until we arrived that the hostess informed us that this was “restaurant week,” and therefore we could only order from a drastically reduced menu. i could not believe that when my father made reservations on the phone, no one thought it appropriate to inform him that this was restaurant week. to me, that already felt like an egregious oversight. in the past, when i’ve gone out during restaurant week, the establishment would typically offer a rwmenuat a reduced price, along with the regularmenuat normal prices. but this was not the case. our only option was the rwmenuon saturday night. we were then ushered to the very back of your backyard patio terrace and promptly forgotten about (apparently, my dad also requested that we not be placed in the back room).

already, the experience was so counter to what i was expecting that it really put me in a bad mood. the octopus that i wanted ... not available. the mushrooms my wife wanted ... not available. the dining choices ... minimal (you were already out of several rw options as well!). every attempt that we made to find alternatives to the pre fixemenuwere thwarted by our server who simply said, “i apologize, but it’s restaurant week and we don’t have any of that in our kitchen.”

the service that made our first visit so special was non-existent! i arrived expecting to get a tour of the fish on ice, and instead found myself simply hoping that our servers would remember we were in the restaurant. on multiple occasions, we had to literally stand up to find a server. we didn’t receive our appetizer course for over 75 minutes after sitting down.

there were so many little things that compounded an already bad situation that it’s hard for me to outline them all here. as an example, ... after telling both my aunt and mother (who are both vegetarian), that there were no vegetables in the kitchen (other than the salad), the server told my vegan wife that they would make here a beet salad (not sure why they’d do that for her and not the other two women). then, over an hour later when the entrees arrived, they brought my wife steamed zucchini and said “we apologize” but we ran out of beets. a) if no beets were even on the pre fixe menu, how does the kitchen promise something and then run out of it when they’re not even serving it? b) why did they not inform her of the switch at some point over that hour? it turns out that my wife hates zucchini.

truly i could go on and on, but i think i made my point. never before has the gap between what i expected and the reality of the situation been so wide. and i think this is why i was so upset by the evening. i was looking forward to celebrating my 40th birthday with an amazing culinary experience while being pampered in a fine restaurant. suffice it to say, that is not what any of us received. to your credit, one of your senior servers apologized to our table and comped us our wine (4 glasses), but it felt like too little too late.

in summary, saturday’s experience morphed the black olive from my favorite restaurant in baltimore to one that i would be remiss to recommend to anyone moving forward. that’s a shame for me and for you. my hope is that you will see this note as your opportunity to win us back as patrons, and to prove to us that last week was an anomaly."
------

as i already stated, i received zero response from them. as i told them in a follow up email this morning, "the poor quality of service that i experienced at the restaurant was unfortunate (and i suspect circumstantial). the poor level of follow-up and your inability to address this situation responsibly is downright egregious and inexcusable."

i guess that is all i have to say about the black olive :-(

so my family and i hoped to celebrate my 50th birthday and chose the black o=
live for a place to end our lovely day. i made a reservation a week in advan=
ce for the upcoming friday, august 3rd at 830 pm. an hour before our reserva=
tion someone from the restaurant gave us a call to inform us that we were go=
ing to experience restaurant week which i accepted with an expectation that e=
ven though themenuwas limited and the portions were smaller, we could stil=
l enjoy the good service and the quality food. when we arrived precisely at 8=
30, the hostess informed us that the table was not ready and it would take a=
bout 15 minutes. we sat at the bar and waited a good 10 minutes for someone t=
o actually acknowledge us. the first several wines of our choice were not av=
ailable so we settled with the bartender's choice. the hostess didn't even a=
cknowledge us for over 30 minutes which we spent watching other people being=
seated happily. we were ready to leave the restaurant when she said that th=
e table was ready. when i made a comment that it took a long time, she said:=
'what do you want, we apologized.' i asked to speak with the manager and ha=
d to wait another 15 minutes. he apologized and asked us to stay. we were se=
ated in the back room between two super loud parties and had to wait a good 4=
5 minutes to be served what looked like last night's left overs- chewy lamb w=
ith a tiny amount if some kind of warmed up cuscus.
i am afraid to anticipate what comes next...
happy birthday to me.
will never return!

horrible!!! ruined my vday dinner, when i arrived for my 6:30 reservation,a few minutes early i might add,i was takin to the back room next to the employee restroom with a tree branch hoover over my head and chairs stacked ceiling high in the corner next to the opening for the wishers witch was covered with a table cloth and inches away from a cheap plug in heater.the wishwashrts were extremely loud and our waiter visted the bathroom four times before ecknowledging me long enough to say ill be over soon,i got grab drinks for that table.when i went to the host stand to ask for another table the owner told me to sit or leave because she had 200 other guest to accomidate.i made a horrible call and stayed only because being a holiday weekend i knewi wouldnt be able to get in anywhere else.besides how much worse could happen....ill tell u...my $38 seafood app was way over cooked and came out cold buti could not tell my sever because he avoised my table all night.i never got amenudemostration or was made aware of any specials but i could hear him tell every other table.an hour into the meal i had a busser get my server so i could ask about my main course only to find out he never rang it in...two hours later my rack of lamb that was overed mid rare came out well done...when i made my server aware he then offered me pepper.twenty minutes later i was offered a box and i refused to take my over cooked uneaten lamb home let alone pay for it.i was then given my check witch reluctantly i payed and tipped!!! o even turned the survey into the ower....and got no respondse or remorse for ruining my vday dinner.
