this is a tough one. could be 3.5 if it was an option. themenuis big with lots of options for all types (vegetarian, vegan, wheat/gluten free). i had their veggie burger, which was really good. for $11 dollars you choose salad or fries and toppings/bun too. my wife had the fish tacos and they were $18. the price on those was not justifiable. the fish was fried dry and very dark, however the soft tacos, i believe were corn, were good. the guacamole, which is house made per waitress, was absolutely dynamite. may be one if the best guacamoles ever. they also have tapas, which indulged in. i got the crispy artichokes and blackened shishito peppers...both good. also good shoestring fries. they should have a lunchmenuwhere you can get lunch type prices, but i doubt they will ever based on the place being full. also a good choice of beverages including several draft beers. i will definitely go back and wouldn’t be surprised if i upped my rating. note, lunch was on the bistro side not the main restaurant/dinner side. a lot of people note the atmosphere as a plus, but i felt it was a little cold. the service and the staff were excellent!

still a favorite. i'll start off with the good about terrapin: it is the one restaurant, out of many to choose from, that has quite simply transformed rhinebeck. it's hard to believe that rhinebeck once was a sleepy little town with an iga. a liquor store, and a number of restaurants you could count on one hand; some great (le petit bistro), some . . . good for the money (foster's). terrapin changed all that. their food has always been tasty, the price point not too high, plus you can't eat on a better property than a sleekly-decorated renovated church within walking distance of all the shops with ample outdoor dining right on the street.

i recently popped into the bistro side for a late sunday lunch with a friend and it was just as we'd left it the last time we were there: many patrons enjoying themselves (despite it being ~4 pm), servers bustling, line cooks frying up endless stacks of french fries in the partly visible kitchen. it's a great scene. but something had been nagging me the last few times i'd eaten there, and my friend nailed it on the head: "i think terrapin's getting a bit too big for its britches."

how? well, for one, the formerly manageablemenunow seems bloated, not only in terms of page count but the strange annotations next to themenuitems (how many times have i looked at "mwf," which means "can be made wheat free," and thought it means "we only serve this monday/wednesday/friday"?). the quantity of offerings takes a while to get through, awkward when your server comes by--for the third time--to ask if you've decided. and i'm just talking about the bistro here, which is supposed to offer fewer items than the dining room at a lower price point. the wine and beermenuhas expanded just as much, and i've noticed that the beer prices (which is what i've visited terrapin the most for--at least before the arrival of grand cru down the street) have, along with the food prices, gone up steadily over the last year or two.

that being said, terrapin's not going anywhere, and ultimately i'm glad for that. while i've griped about their seemingly endless menu, that makes it a great place to eat *because* there is so much choice. the restaurant's dedication to "locavorism," albeit a bit beaten-to-death sometimes, continues to rival any area farm-to-table restaurant. josh kroner is the only head chef i can actually identify by name in a pretty big radius, which undoubtedly says something about his good culinary reputation as much as terrapin's self-promotion of him. it's also a great place to go late-night (meaning an hour that would still represent the older local population, i.e. not 3 am; and mainly because most places have already closed their doors).

so, if you're a long-time local like me who's had a chance to see how rhinebeck has changed--for the better and/or worse--then maybe you'll understand the teeny bit of cynicism i have for terrapin. but if you're reading this and trying to decide if this is the next place you should have a drink or a meal, then: yes. go. terrapin remains one of the many reasons i will never stop hanging out in rhinebeck.

a long time ago one of my friends recommended terrapin restaurant to me. since it is in rhinebeck, i never got a chance to get there to check out, until this past weekend! my friend said they had an extensive beer list, so chris was really excited about that! pretty flowers! the restaurant was across from america's oldest inn! rhinebeck is a pretty cool town! there were also a bunch of shops to check out. we only got to see the bookstore, which was pretty nice! time for dinner! terrapin had a really nice atmosphere. it seemed like a nice place to take a group of friends or a date for a celebratory dinner! i was excited to try the food. since there were no new york wines on themenu(sad) i ordered a peach bellini . i hardly ever order mixed drinks out at dinner, but i figured since it was part of my birthday dinner, i should! it was fizzy, sweet and very peachy! i wanted to keep it light for dinner, so we skipped any appetizers. i ordered the falafel salad for my meal. the salad was go

my family consists of opinionated people with specific and individualistic tastes and preferences. that is why we love terrapin. there is something for everyone. the restaurant is split into three sections: the fine dining room, the red bistro, and the summer patio--each with their own menus. the building drips with character and history as it is crafted in beautiful gothic architecture and is a former baptist church.the dining room has a comfortable and quiet atmosphere, with high oak-clad ceilings. the bistro is more of a casual atmosphere, with less complex and more affordablemenuchoices. anything from duck confit to enchiladas to a hamburger and fries may be had. my family loves this place and i highly reccommend it to all.

cheers for terrapin. terrapin is extremely cool. whenever i'm in dutchess county i always try to steer the day's events toward rhinebeck so that i have an excuse to drop by and eat/drink something delightful.

bistro favorites include the calamari and the duck quesadilla. i'm not much of a fish person but the mizuna salad with the salmon is also excellent, and makes for a nice, light lunch.

i tend to frequent the bistro more than the dining room, but anytime i've gone for the gold and had dinner on the fancy side it's been great. the room itself is huge and gorgeous, and the food is also huge, also gorgeous, with the added bonus of tasting phenomenal. favorite dishes there are the lamb and the bowtie pasta with broccoli rabe. the portions are so generous i almost always end up taking home enough for lunch the next day.

the wine list is extensive and the beer selection is awesome. the beverage manager must be extremely savvy because the beermenu(which is updated frequently) is always packed with really interesting ny craft brews that you'd be hard pressed to find together anywhere else. i almost always get a drink with dinner just to taste what new brews they have in.

all around a winner!

what did i do?. i am fascinated when i see reviews of a place: i love it - no, i hate it - no, i think it is the greatest. but unfortunately that is what i am about to do. i stopped by terrapin to grab a drink and avoid some traffic getting to the ny throughway. i am from nm and was just visiting the fdr complex when my father and i stopped into the bistro for the worst service at a bar that i have had in a long time. the ultimate disservice was when i asked for amenuand decided to try figs stuffed with roquefort as an appetizer. may i suggest to you "amy" that when you give a customer amenu- maybe you want to follow up with finding out if they want to order something when they place themenudown? not go to the far end of the bar and chat with the other wait staff and when a drink is empty, how about offering the customer a new one. i must state that there was what appeared to be a local couple sitting next to us. multiple wait staff had conversations and serviced them well. maybe they only want locals for their clientele at the terrapin restaurant?
