sunda is a new restaurant in melbourne serving a modern take on south-east asian cuisine. tucked away down punch lane, the small restaurant has very unique and industrial vibe to it. you’ll definitely have to make a booking, as the venue is very small and can only seat a limited number of diners.
we had a booking for 2 at 6pm, and upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and taken to our seats. the tables are arranged in long bench-style tables, so you’ll be sharing a table with other diners. however there’s still plenty of space to comfortably enjoy your meal, and the atmosphere is fantastic.
our waiter gave an in-depth explanation of the menu and their specials for the night. we ended up ordering 7 dishes + 2 desserts (we were incredibly full after!), all of which were absolutely delicious. our favourites were probably the “otak otak”, a very unique take on crab curry which was served in a pate-like form - so light and flavourful, and the rice crisps were perfect - and the torched duckfish sashimi (one of the specials), which came with an incredible yellow curry sauce. definitely recommend trying the pie tee as well!
everything about the night, from the food to the service to the atmosphere, was amazing, and sunda definitely left me lost for words! i would highly recommend checking this place out if you like modern asian-fusion cuisine. i’ll definitely be coming back!
