this is our go to place when we want a fabulous meal but do not want wait over an hour to get seated. everything on their menu is worth trying. i am a vegetarian. my two favorite meals are the fungi pasta and the pizza. tonight the specials were chicken spedini, tomato, basil, mozzarella salad and halibut over risotto. my guest tried the halibut and we both had the tomato salad . i also ordered the fungi pizza. thefoodwas spectacular the the service was impeccable. the is probably one of the best restaurants in edwardsville.

an italian poet only should review this establishment.. we drove through edwardsville repeatedly and i kept wondering what's sugos? it sits back from the main road and is a hard book to read just by its cover, but one day something made us go in. impressive. the interior is old timber furnishings, nothing flashy or overt gaudy italian villa like you get with bravo, just plain simple, inviting, while not private. the wait staff or as i will call them professional waiters, know their business and are exceptionally attentive. timing is perfect and prompt. the menu is the best i've seen for such a restaurant, simple with only a few select items. three appetizers and i suggest above all else the bruchetta. on our first visit i had the risotto pesto special which was insane and my wife had the spaghetti and meatball half portion with a salad. it that was the half portion then the full portion would've taken her two days to eat. it was huge. the second visit we did was about a week later and i had the lasagna. huge, baked and toasted at the end. i can't rave enough about how excellent it was. all fresh ingredients, moist and you could tell made to perfection with care. it was massive and took me two days to eat it. this isn't a get 'em in get 'em out restaurant. you go here for the dining experience. spend some time, relax and revel over the flavors and take in their savory wine list, which is impressive. please, don't order the white zinfandel here. i don't know if they have it but i hope they don't. please broaden your horizons and get the chianti. i tipped over 20% on a $60 lunch bill for two because the service was excellent and thefoodwas excellent. we will be coming back and bringing friends and i highly suggest you go too for a romantic dinner.

trying new things, still enjoying!. on our most recent visit i tried the lasagna. it's huge portion, definitely enough for two meals. it is stacked high, yet has a very delicate construction that cuts easily with a fork and doesn't cause the whole thing to disintigrate all over the plate. it was very good. my gf had the tilapia special over pasta and red sauce, which is a little different with a fish dish, but she said it was still very good. i think she would have either preferred a spcier red sauce or a light garlic/butter/white wine type of sauce. good service and reasonable prices still make sugo's very attractive.
1/30/15 update: we've been back here about once a month on a regular basis. the babo's pizza continues to be a strong favorite. we've had the seafood specials several times and enjoyed all of them. the chicken spediini is very good too. they recently added soup to the menu and last night i had a great bowl of lobster bisque. the service seems to get better all the time (nikki did a great job last night) and the place was packed with a full waiting area, so it's clear that the word is getting around!

try the specials. on our most recent visit we learned that there are designated specials for $5 on mon, tues and wed nights. i think it was a tuesday and i had the spaghetti with shrimp and spicy red sauce and for $5 it was an outstanding value! we are also big fans of the bobo's pizza which has sausage, balsamic vinegar and a few other nice touches. (just make sure you check your bill. i did get overcharged on a glass of wine recently).

-----28 apr, 2013-----

my impression keeps improving. i've been back here a couple of times since the initial opening and my other experiences have been better and better. it's still a bit clamorous in there with the noise, but thefoodis pretty good. one time we tried pizzas and found them to be good, thin crust, real cheese and a few nice twists, like a sprinkle of balsamic vinegar that added a great flavor. the other night we tried the seafood specials, one shrimp and one cod and both were quite good. decent prices, good wine, prompt service, all very solid.

-----30 oct, 2012-----

still getting up to speed. i tried sugo's during its first week in business for dinner on a friday night. the room is designed to look a little "rustic tuscan", and has a nice atmosphere. it is, however, a big, boxy room with concrete floors, lots of glass and bare walls and high metal ceilings with little in the way of acoustics. needless to say, the when the room is full it can put the "din" in dinner.
nikki was my server and she was very friendly and quick with a menu and a glass of wine. i ordered a house salad and a plate of the tutto mare pasta with seafood. i waited, but the salad did not appear. after a significant amount of time my server came by and said the salad would be right up, but within seconds another server arrived with my pasta, so i asked her to let them know i wouldn't need the salad as i had planned to have that first and they were very apologetic about the mix up. i do understand that a new place usually takes a few weeks to get everyone on the same page and get the timing down, so i didn't come in with super high expectations. the tutomare was good in flavor with a delicious garlic sauce and nice portion size; it had several good sized shrimp and maybe a little crab meat, but no other seafood that i could detect.
the place was packed, so they are clearly getting the once over by an eager dining community in e-ville, and i hope they have things polished quickly. i would like to go back and try a few other dishes.june 2015:  continues to improve (they've added liquor to their alcohol offerings), and the risotto impresses me every time i try it.  the specials tend to be very good and the babbo's pizza is a perpetual favorite.

having been involved in the restaurant/food service business for my entire life i have to say, sugo's in edwardsville is a fresh welcome suprise. it takes alot to impress my family. many places put too much into the atmosphere only to miss the mark on the food, others try to put too much on the menu and miss because you cannot put the time needed to create greatfoodwhen it's an overwhelming menu. keep it simple, keep it fresh, make it you own signature. that's what i was taught in culinary school. we went to sugo's for a birthday celebration and they hit the mark on everything! for those who say it was loud--seriously?? i cringe when asked to eat at the 'pre made', run of the mill, copy cat, extremely loud, herd in herd out, 'fast food' establishments (applebee's, chilis, steak joints, pasta house, mexican joints, etc). our party was not all there and we were seated immediately, served drinks, and the best bread we've had the pleasure of enjoying in a long time!! so i dont understand the issues others commented on. like many americans, we expect italianfoodto be heavy on the spices, sauces, cheeses, etc, but 'real' italian fare is light and the flavor of the ingredients is what comes thru. not over burdened by sauces. our waiter was very good as were the rest of the staff. we all ordered a vast array of the menu and everyone loved their choices. the spaghetti and meatballs were the 'bomb' as my 3 adult sons commented. the atmosphere was open, clean, rustic, and very inviting. no overwhelming walls of crap like many places feel the need to have. the pasta was cooked the way pasta should be- al dente- not mush like most think it should be. too many times there are people who are in a foul mood when they decide to dine out, which in turn makes them the most critical, impossible to please, rude, and unappreciative ones to cook n serve. i say this due to many of the reviews i have read and life experience as a chef, mgr, wait staff. we will definitely be back to sugo's. try it n decide for yourself, you wont be disappointed.. oh and as far as comparing to bella milano--yes bella has very good food, the big difference is the bill at the end. if on a budget sugo's, if money is no option bella.. both places got it right..

meh. i was very apprehensive about giving this place a chance. once they had officially opened - on several different occasions - friends and i tried to dine here, but the hours were never posted or they were posted (open) with no one in the building. ?? a few other people mentioned the same thing happening to them. i did a bit of research on the place and discovered sugo's is operated by someone who's been in the restaurant business for years so it seems odd to make such a weird first impression on the town. bygones.
last week my co-workers and i decided to try it for lunch the decor and overall vibe was much better than what i was expecting after reading the reviews. i give them a bunch of credit for trying to make it look as cozy on the inside as they can in such a sterile space. warm colors, neat center counter/bar, lighting, etc.
two of us got pasta and the other a pizza. all tasty. i think basic can be good, but then again ... i think most people dine out for something above and beyond what they could do at home. i have no complaints about thefoodor service (our waitress was really very nice), but i don't think this will be a place that i think of if someone ask's me what i want for dinner.

great addition to the edwardsvillefoodscene. my wife and i went sugo’s with somewhat muted expectations, given some of the reviews, and we were really impressed by the entire experience from start to finish. this is a well thought out restaurant in many respects, and i think some of the differences between this experience and other italian restaurants in the area will serve them well.

the first thing i noticed about sugo’s was the spare menu. their choices are limited, although pretty much every important italian cuisine category was represented, albeit with fewer choices per. but look them up and check out their menu. for me, a limited menu is often a good sign that a restaurant has made a business decision to offer fewer choices, but to really execute what they do decide to serve decisively and well.

next, the service was really spot-on. our waitress (tiffany) was pleasant and informed, and answered the couple of questions we had regarding the menu with obvious pride in the restaurant’s offerings. she explained that everything is prepared fresh everyday, the meatballs, the sauces, the bread made on site, etc. she obviously believes in what she is serving, which is always nice.

the business about all thefoodbeing prepared fresh answered the issue of the limited size of the menu. when you are going to make everything anew everyday, you have to make choices about how much you can execute well day after day, and your menu has to reflect those choices.

last night (friday 2/22) my wife had the mushroom pasta, and i had the seafood pasta. mine was really good, and i’ll definitely get it again. my wife’s mushroom pasta was truly awesome... something unique that you won’t find at what might seem like similar restaurants. you gotta like mushrooms to love this one, and the roasted garlic is a prominent flavor, too. but this was one of those dishes that makes you just look at one another across the table and say, “wow!” it is so good, so earthy, and the mushroom broth light yet substantial. i’m getting that the next time we go!

we were full after the pasta, so we ordered the tiramisu to go. later in the evening we divided it up and dug in. delicious. my wife said it might be the best tiramisu she’s ever had.

one other thing that was a fun bonus: the general manager, micah, came over to ask how dinner was. we struck up a nice conversation, and it was a pleasure to meet him.

oh, and by the way: the house wine ($18 a bottle) is a quite decent table wine to go with the pasta, and a bargain at that price. truth is, the whole experience seemed like a bargain at this price point... which is why i suspect we might become regulars of sugo’s!

i’ll close by sharing a couple of thoughts about some of the negative reviews. i think many americans eating italian fare are used to the big, thick sauces, alfredo that has the consistency of grandma’s sausage gravy, etc. but just as there are differences in american cuisine, from the generally light pacific northwest seafood, to crispy-crusty southern fried chicken and creamy grits, there is a lot of variety in italian cuisine as well. it’s all a matter of one’s personal palate, but i like the lighter more brothy sauces sometimes. if one doesn’t care for that style of italian cooking, that’s fine. but i still found that thefoodwas well executed.

one reviewer recommends going to bella milano instead, which is certainly fine to say, as by nature restaurant reviews have some elements of subjectivity to them, and my pick may not be your pick. but to assert that bella milano has “better food... similar price... better atmosphere” is to ignore that there are important differences between the two offerings.

my wife loves bella milano, and i like it “ok,” too. but we were both impressed with sugo’s tonight, and really think that they have found a unique sweet-spot that will make them an edwardsville fixture for a long time to come.

greatfoodat a great price. my family of five split the lasagna, chicken fettuccine alfredo and a sugo's pizza and had leftovers to take home. our waiter was melissa. she was fantastic. she was very attentive to our needs and made my three children feel at home. i would highly recommend this restaurant and the server.

this was my first experience with sugo's. i was not impressed. the atmosphere was loud and dark. our server was friendly, but thefoodwas awful. our bread was burnt. the water was warm. i ordered the spaghetti and the sauce was a soup. it tasted nothing like any spaghetti sauce i've had in the past. the meatball was scorching hot, so i'm hoping it wasn't microwaved.
