meh. i was very apprehensive about giving this place a chance. once they had officially opened - on several different occasions - friends and i tried to dine here, but the hours were never posted or they were posted (open) with no one in the building. ?? a few other people mentioned the same thing happening to them. i did a bit of research on the place and discovered sugo's is operated by someone who's been in the restaurant business for years so it seems odd to make such a weird first impression on the town. bygones.
last week my co-workers and i decided to try it for lunch the decor and overall vibe was much better than what i was expecting after reading the reviews. i give them a bunch of credit for trying to make it look as cozy on the inside as they can in such a sterile space. warm colors, neat center counter/bar, lighting, etc.
two of us got pasta and the other a pizza. all tasty. i think basic can be good, but then again ... i think most people dine out for something above and beyond what they could do at home. i have no complaints about the food or service (our waitress was really very nice), but i don't think this will be a place that i think of if someone ask's me what i want for dinner.

great spot. my husband and i ate at sugo's last saturday. we were delighted with the atmosphere although a bit noisy. our salads were generous, fresh and tasty. i was intrigued with how the water was served! our meals were beautifully presented and very tasty. our waitress could have been more friendly and forgot our our bruscetta. but otherwise a great meal and a nice change for this area. i think alot of complaints are folks not used to true italian cuisine without heavy sauces and over cooked pasta.
a breath of fresh air!!!

the pastas and salads are good. better than pasta house and bella milano.
no atmosphere whatsoever. very loud when busy. could be better, yet a nice addition to town.

great addition to the edwardsville food scene. my wife and i went sugo’s with somewhat muted expectations, given some of the reviews, and we were really impressed by the entire experience from start to finish. this is a well thought out restaurant in many respects, and i think some of the differences between this experience and other italian restaurants in the area will serve them well.

the first thing i noticed about sugo’s was the spare menu. their choices are limited, although pretty much every important italian cuisine category was represented, albeit with fewer choices per. but look them up and check out their menu. for me, a limited menu is often a good sign that a restaurant has made a business decision to offer fewer choices, but to really execute what they do decide to serve decisively and well.

next, the service was really spot-on. our waitress (tiffany) was pleasant and informed, and answered the couple of questions we had regarding the menu with obvious pride in the restaurant’s offerings. she explained that everything is prepared fresh everyday, the meatballs, the sauces, the bread made on site, etc. she obviously believes in what she is serving, which is always nice.

the business about all the food being prepared fresh answered the issue of the limited size of the menu. when you are going to make everything anew everyday, you have to make choices about how much you can execute well day after day, and your menu has to reflect those choices.

last night (friday 2/22) my wife had the mushroom pasta, and i had the seafood pasta. mine was really good, and i’ll definitely get it again. my wife’s mushroom pasta was truly awesome... something unique that you won’t find at what might seem like similar restaurants. you gotta like mushrooms to love this one, and the roasted garlic is a prominent flavor, too. but this was one of those dishes that makes you just look at one another across the table and say, “wow!” it is so good, so earthy, and the mushroom broth light yet substantial. i’m getting that the next time we go!

we were full after the pasta, so we ordered the tiramisu to go. later in the evening we divided it up and dug in. delicious. my wife said it might be the best tiramisu she’s ever had.

one other thing that was a fun bonus: the general manager, micah, came over to ask how dinner was. we struck up a nice conversation, and it was a pleasure to meet him.

oh, and by the way: the house wine ($18 a bottle) is a quite decent table wine to go with the pasta, and a bargain at that price. truth is, the whole experience seemed like a bargain at this price point... which is why i suspect we might become regulars of sugo’s!

i’ll close by sharing a couple of thoughts about some of the negative reviews. i think many americans eating italian fare are used to the big, thick sauces, alfredo that has the consistency of grandma’s sausage gravy, etc. but just as there are differences in american cuisine, from the generally light pacific northwest seafood, to crispy-crusty southern fried chicken and creamy grits, there is a lot of variety in italian cuisine as well. it’s all a matter of one’s personal palate, but i like the lighter more brothy sauces sometimes. if one doesn’t care for that style of italian cooking, that’s fine. but i still found that the food was well executed.

one reviewer recommends going to bella milano instead, which is certainly fine to say, as by nature restaurant reviews have some elements of subjectivity to them, and my pick may not be your pick. but to assert that bella milano has “better food... similar price... better atmosphere” is to ignore that there are important differences between the two offerings.

my wife loves bella milano, and i like it “ok,” too. but we were both impressed with sugo’s tonight, and really think that they have found a unique sweet-spot that will make them an edwardsville fixture for a long time to come.

for the price, just take the extra 2 minutes and drive to bella milano... better food and similar price with a better atmosphere

the only semi good thing about my visit was the caesar salad. the spaghetti "sauce" was basically just tomato flavored water. the meatballs weren't good either. my boyfriend had the lasagna and describes it similar to eating raw hamburger. barely any noodles in the lasagna. terrible experience!

husband and i tried sugo's in edwardsville this evening. very disappointed in our experience. tried this evenings special salad- appeared to be totally baby spinach with slices of apples on the bottom, cranberries on top and tossed with pine nuts with a vinegarette dressing. the dressing was tasty, but the rest of the salad tasted gritty and the pine nuts left an unpleasant aftertaste. i had the chicken fetticini alfredo. thefetticini was undercooked and chewy, plus it seemed to have minimal alfredo sauce. my husband had the salmon. he stated that the salmon was crunchy on the outside, although the inside was good. he also felt the cheese dumplings that accompanied the fish were too few in number. plus again minimal sauce. the restaurant did not give any sense of an italian atmosphere. there were no decorations, a few chandeliers, and an open industrial feel with exposed duct work and pipes. no background music. nothing i would want to experience again. dinner for the 2 of us (no alcohol consumed) was over $40. we won't be going back.

fantastic!. from the divine bread and wonderful olive oil to the wine list and entrees, our meal was fantastic. patrick was our server; hope we get him again. i had the risotto del giorno, which was light and wonderful. my husband had thin spaghetti and 2 giant meatballs in a light sauce. both of us took home a go-box. we''ll definitely be going back!

great food at a great price. my family of five split the lasagna, chicken fettuccine alfredo and a sugo's pizza and had leftovers to take home. our waiter was melissa. she was fantastic. she was very attentive to our needs and made my three children feel at home. i would highly recommend this restaurant and the server.

as a st. louis exile, a delight to see a del pietro creation in my own backyard. warm setting, good food and their signature lasagna to die for. would like to see a daily beef special added to the menu.

this was my first experience with sugo's. i was not impressed. the atmosphere was loud and dark. our server was friendly, but the food was awful. our bread was burnt. the water was warm. i ordered the spaghetti and the sauce was a soup. it tasted nothing like any spaghetti sauce i've had in the past. the meatball was scorching hot, so i'm hoping it wasn't microwaved.

45 minutes until we got our food and had the most rude waitress ever. rolled her eyes everytime we asked her for something then scolded us for not leaving a 20% tip. lasagna was not good.

i've only been once so far, but it was a fairly pleasant experience. the bread was okay, and i agree that the olive oil was pretty bland for dipping. other than that my entree was amazing. (i had the fish special was red snapper on top of a mushroom risotto. delish!) the staff was also very attentive.

sugo's is a welcome addition to edwardsville--who doesn't need another italian option? bread at the table was good. salads were delicious but do not come with the entree. appetizers were also very good. i had the mushroom pasta and as a true mushroom lover, this dish definitely satisfied! i will definitely be back. hopefully after working out the kinks, the service will be better.

molto buono!. my wife, son, mother-in-law, and i stopped in sugo's last week, after cruising the highway 157 "restaurant desert" that spans from route 50 to the south to the outskirts of edwardsville. as the other reviewers noted, the decor is not a reason to go there; it is big, cold, plain, and hard. however, we had a very nice dining experience, and that is why we went: to eat and talk. micah, the guy in charge, was very nice, and so was our waitress. we had a nice bottle of italian white, a gavi, so it is great that there is more than pinot grigio and chardonnay available. we each ordered something diff and each were pleased with what we had. the canneloni were a nice texture, not soggy, so that was a bonus. i ike that the menu is small and simple, and my son -- who lived in southern italy from the age of two to fourteen -- considers it the best local option for la vera cucina italiana. he and i are heading back tonight, and i am curious to try the risotto and see if they have this simple, but easy for cooks to over-simmer item down.
if they just had peroni on tap and could pronounce "bruschetta" correctly....
