home cooking. we enjoyed this place. it's not fancy but food was well prepared. all of the sides were fantastic, my favorite was the candied yams. chicken fried steak was moist and flavoring was spicy but not hot. service is a hoot. our waitress was friendly, outgoing, and called everyone sweetheart. as we left she told us babies to have a nice night. this is a definite spot to stop when in tacoma.

omg!!!! we are from the east coast (va/sc) and we have been looking for some real southern cooking for nights when we don’t want to cook ourselves. let me tell you southern kitchen feels just like home. you know when you pull up at grandmas house and can smell the food outside the screen door. front door ain’t even opened yet but you can still smell it. you name it they got it fried chicken, catfish, okra, corn cakes, mac n cheese, red beans and rice, stuffing and gravy all the deserts we tried to get as much as we could. we have to come back for the breakfast foods! for all my non pork eaters they cook with turkey ham and beef bacon no pork in my fork!!!! the greens!!!! omg the greens were amazing with that beef bacon. i’m in love with this place. don’t let others make the decision for you check this place out. this is the real thing!!! soul food away from the south. this is it!!!!

i had heard about this place for years, but never made it out there. today was the day! excellent service was just the beginning. we were greeted right away, a table cleaned off quickly and drinks ordered. my daughter had the mango lemonade with whipped cream on top. delicious with real mangos inside! my husband had the blackberry lemonade. equally as delicious with real blackberries inside. i had the sweet tea. definitely real southern sweet tea. you could tell the sugar was brewed in the tea. now the main course. i had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. the chicken fried steak was mouth watering with brown gravy. flaky and flavorful to the last bite. the only negative thing i have to say is the mac and cheese could have been browned more. the cheese wasn’t quite melted on the top, but the flavor was great. my husband had the catfish and loved it. my daughter had the fried chicken. as soon as she took her first bite, she said the skin was crisp and flavorful. she loved the gravy in the mashed potatoes and rice. the server came back several times to check on us, ask how our food was and refill our drinks. there was an older man at the register and he greeted everyone as they walked in and either had them seated right away or said they’d be right with them. they moved quickly and got people seated and served with warmth and friendliness. i’ve seen some negative reviews about the service. i can tell you we had exactly the opposite experience. the staff was all warm and welcoming and made us feel at home. my daughter actually commented about how friendly they were not five minutes after we walked in the restaurant. we ordered peach cobbler to go and i can’t wait to try it once i recover from the food! huge portions and i’m so full and satisfied. we will definitely be back very soon. thank you to the southern kitchen for the amazing hospitality. ❤️

had the chicken fried steak. very good food and quick, friendly service. only complaint would be parking. very limited up front with paid parking in the back.

this is such a fun place to enjoy real southern food! it's a really small diner, but it's worth coming here. the staff is very friendly and the prices are affordable. the craziness that goes on in the kitchen makes it all worth while. you really feel like you're in the south for some good grubbin. i had their sweet tea, corn cakes, classic fried chicken with mashed potatoes, and macaroni. so good!

you won't find better service anywhere! the food isn't too bad either. we've had breakfast, lunch and dinner here and have never been let down.
love the corn cakes! but they need to bring back honey for them...that's my only complaint.

no good!. i went with couple of southerners! they always drink sweet tea at home so they know a good one when they drink one!

they thought the sweet tea was super sweet. they had hard time drinking it! i tried it, it was extremely sweet and i love sweet things.

terrible. no customer device skills to start. made us wait and there were tables available.... then sat us after about ten minutes in the same tables that had already been empty!
i ordered the fried chicken and my chicken was bloody inside. i informed my waitress (owner) and she said she'd make note of it. she did not offer another piece of chicken or anything off of our meal. we ordered a side of black eye peas that we never received and were charged for. after letting them know that the black eye peas were never brought to us they packaged some up to go and still made us pay for them. really???
this restaurant will never see us again.

not good !. saw this place on ddd in 09 finally made it up there ..service was ok food not so much.... me and my wife had fried green tomato's not bad . we both had the fried catfish greens and cornbread stuffing with gravy. the fish was of poor quality the stuffing was tasteless the gravy was powdered not good at all the greens were nothing but smoke flavor .... for almost 60 bucks for two i expected it to at least taste good .. i'm not going back !

incredible food, all of it. the butterfish was tender and flaky, the candied yams soft and sweet. the corn cake, mac n cheese, fried chicken... all excellent. i will be sure to return.

no like. had the fried chicken, ezell's has better, cornbread pancakes, what happen to good old cornbread, collard greens, too much smokiness, fried okra, not homemade, bread pudding, will go back just to buy the bread pudding.

i must've gone on an off day.... i had heard about the restaurant from ddd, and was eager to try it out. i ordered fried okra, fried chicken and a double order of greens, and tea. the okra did not look like it was done in house - more like it was a bag of frozen okra purchased through a distributor. the greens were good, yet there was entirely too much salt in them, and the meat used looked a little like dried processed jerky. the chicken also had something of a love/hate relationship, because the breast i ordered was great, but the leg was ice cold. as for ice cold, the tea was great. the restaurant was extremely busy so clean up was minimal and the owner was pitching, and while the owner was kind and generous to most of her patrons, i did not feel the same warmth and welcome.

i was skeptical. i've never had soul food and am a very picky eater.

i had the brisket, mashed potatoes, mac n cheese and jalapeño hush puppies.
needless to say, i've been back 6 times now in 2 months!
the prices are a bit high but you definitely get a ton of food for the money!!
