extremely rude behavior marked our visit. four of us excitedly showed up at smith street diner today for lunch around 1:00. we meet every thursday and smith street has fried chicken on thursday. we asked for a table for four and they told us that we would have to wait outside. none of us are large people, one friend is not even 5 feet tall. one member of our group is in her 70's and the heat index today was right at 100. they were full but had a few extra seats and three at the bar. she told me we had to wait outside because of the capacity rules. i mentioned that there were three chairs at the bar and she said we could only sit there if we were going to eat there because that was reserved for paying customers. my friend is on heart medication and i was not making her stand in the heat to eat at any restaurant. i quickly counted the tables and chairs and in addition to the three bar stools they also had 6 empty chairs at tables which were not at capacity. i have to say, their fried chicken is usually good but today it just did not taste that good. i for one will not be going back. rude behavior is uncalled for and asking a 70+ year old woman to stand outside in the heat to wait for a table is absurd. bye smith street diner. by the way, i am very familiar with the fire marshall's rules. my husband works for them.

amazing! i don't write many restaurant reviews, but this little gem is amazing! the service was pleasant, even though i was getting a to-go order. i had a sausage and gravy biscuit! it was delicious, and a huge helping! i couldn't even finish it all! ended up splitting it with a friend, and i was still full! i would highly recommend this diner for breakfast at a minimum. haven't been there for any other meal, but fully intend to! on a scale of 1 - 10, i would rate this restaurant an 8, and that's being critical. again, this is my first review of this restaurant. more to come though. hope this helped!

i'll have to disagree with whoever said the hash was wonderful. pure grease and nothing like i had as a kid. eitherway, still a great restaurant. cheap, tasty, large portions, and nice people. definitely worth it.

amazing!. this place is awesome! we moved to the area several months ago, but have already been here about four times. their biscuits and gravy are stellar-and massive! the first time i went there, i asked for two biscuits. the waitress gave me a funny look and said, "are you sure? they're really big." when i told her that biscuits in ohio (where i'm from) are about the size of a kid's palm, she laughed and said, "you're in the south now, honey." she was right-the biscuits are ginormous! the omelettes are also fantastic, and i love that they have turkey sausage and little packets of bonne maman jam (my favorite jam, which is a nice departure from the standard smuckers). overall, great place to eat a good, filling breakfast!

nice little southern breakfast place. when searching for a country style breakfast place to take some friends visiting from out of town everything i read led me to smith street diner and i can't say anyone was dissapointed. the food was quality, though eggs and bacon are not easy to screw up. the biscuits were large as advertised though mine was a little hard as i prefer a softer biscuit but it was still tasty none the less. the server was exactly what i expected, rushed and busy but offered the southern hospitality that i was looking for. food was average price for what it was, maybe a little on the high side and the place was small and cramped but fulfulled expectations none the less. i'd go back but it is not a must visit when entertaining guests in my opinion.

great food for breakfast and lunch. biscuits, gravy, soups, cornbread and house-smoked salmon are incredible. every question from the staff was accompanied by a smile and every question to the staff was answered with a smile. great food, great service!

the only item on the menu you should order is the homemade corned beef hash. everything else is excellent. but that dish is spectacular.
