we were there for pre-bday celebration

it has two levels. on the first floor, it was dim light, nice ambiance and one is rooftop, surrounded with flowers and lighting…

we chatted and had food…

food was okay. nothing great and it was overly expensive.

like i had food and drink in 230 fifth avenue, nyc and there it was not that expensive…

and it’s not even on prime spot.. still… you can go there once on full moon…

skinner's loft is a family run restaurant in jersey city.
high quality food served by friendly knowledgeable staff.  skinners loft has the feeling of an old faithful type of restaurant.

fantastic decor - right up my alley. very friendly service, and knowledgeable staff. the food isn't cheap but i loved the salmon. my friend enjoyed the chicken too. small plates didn't look particularly healthy so we steered clear. i was sorely tempted to try the dessert menu which looked awesome. will return.

went here for a brunch on saturday and had the best food experience! we ordered the french toast and lamb burger and both were very very good. the lamb burger was done to perfection and great greek seasoning made it very tasty. the french toast was amazing and worth coming back for!

valentine’s day just isn’t complete without a proper date night. we made a reservation at skinner’s loft, which is right by litm near the grove st path. i fell in love with the ambiance as soon as we stepped inside. a beautiful mix of warm wood, exposed brick, and salvaged furnishings. the 2nd floor was intimate and cozy. i’d love to have brunch on the rooftop during the summer!

this is the first time i’ve seen a vegetable charcuterie platter ($12) on the menu at a restaurant. it include mushroom pecan pate, buttercup squash and carrot rillete, house pickled vegetables, dijon mustard, cranberry chutney, and assorted toast. this was much more filling than we expected. the mushroom pate was obviously just for me, and i barely ate a quarter of it. so delicious, but so rich. the pickled veggies were good too, and the veggie rillette had a nice creamy texture. i highly recommend this platter to any vegetarian. in fact, skinner’s loft is pretty veggie friendly as a whole.

superb!. the service, the food, the ambiance in this place is perfection. from will, who greets & seats you, to michelina, who has served me a few times, to the food which is fresh, tasty and has fantastic energy in it. i've brought my friend & her husband who are both doctors & who frequent nyc. they're picky & they loved it. i'm a vegetarian and the selection i've had here has me more than completely satisfied.

i come here not just to enjoy good company & food but also to have some alone time with a book, a meal & a little scotch. the prices are quite reasonable for everything this place offers. i feel lucky it's only a 10 min down the hill. i know this will sound all "woo-woo" but i'm going to say it anyway, this place has an energy of love & warmth. my thanks to the owner for creating such a space :))

very nice date spot in jersey city!. last week i tried out skinner's loft for the first time. i read a few reviews here and was impressed by the comments. the overall atmosphere was warm and inviting. i enjoyed comfortable decor as well.

i give the restaurant 3 out of 5 only because the service was not the best. the waitress was uninterested in answering questions about the menu and generally seemed to want to be elsewhere. it did not ruin my experience but could have been improved.

for dinner we had a filet and potatoes, caesar salad, and the item i would highly recommend trying, the lobster blt! so delicious! i enjoyed this spot and my only hope is that if you try it your service is better.

great food, nice staff. my girlfriend and i thoroughly enjoy this place. food is always great and they have an excellent drink selection. the entire staff - from bartender to host to server - all combine to make this place an excellent choice any night of the week. definitely check out the rooftop on a summer night!

great.... i really like this place. i've come a bunch of times with my girlfriend who lives in the neighborhood and can say it's been a strong showing each time. the food is great, the staff are all really nice and the place is beautiful. they are also strong on the craft beers, which is a bonus, if not a must. the food is delicious and, for the quality, inexpensive (even though i've heard people complain it, but living in manhattan does kinda make me immune i guess). to sum up, i like it. good food and beer, comfortable place.

decent, overpriced for the quality. i have tried this place several times and have never found it much better than decent, though never bad. i prefer the bar to the upstairs restaurant, which for some reason is a little bit off in terms of atmosphere. there are some interesting options on the menu but none impressed when consumed, it is a bit overpriced for the quality of food. i find that a burger is a good test of a restaurant, skinners burger was passable, but at $10 was priced too high. the burger at the light horse cost the same and was vastly superior in quality.

nice spot despite last visit. i've been to skinners loft about 4 or 5 times now since it opened and all but one of the visits were highly enjoyable. it was my most recent visit to skinners loft on a monday night during restaurant week where unfortunately there wasn't anything we ate that was of quality.

the starter bean soup was decent. then came the apple / endive / blue cheese salad with a goupy dijonnaise dressing and barely any blue cheese. it was heavy, not very flavorful...quite bland. the salmon for the main entree was over-cooked, on top of a thick layer of lentils and heavy assortment of other dry vegetables. my date's ahi tuna starter was no better, with an interesting garnish of peeled pear strips in a similar sludgy white sauce that simply tasted terrible. her steak was overcooked as well. even the chocolate cake was dry and for me, a lover of sweets, a huge letdown. the saving grace for the dessert round was the sweet crepe which was very tasty.

in all, everything seemed to lack a certain freshness this past visit...and while this sounds like a very negative review, it was only this one time that i endured such a substandard dining experience here. maybe it was due to it being a monday night, late...around 10pm. but still i would expect the food served to retain a certain level of quality regardless of the time of the day/day of the week.

otherwise, all my meals here have been wonderful and the atmosphere/decor of the restaurant is lovely. i'll definitely be going back, crossing my fingers that the last visit was a fluke!

seasonal menus = freshness. great place for dinner. i've been here several times during the year and most recently last week. my wife and i find the food absolute delicious. we've been coming here since february 2008 and the menu has changed several times reflecting the seasons. we've had the winter, summer and fall menus. we love the ambiance of the dining room upstairs. this time we had the soup special, asparagus bisque with portobello croutons. the soup was hearty and frothy. we were amazed by the croutons. cubed portobellos breaded and baked dry. it had a fantastic intense mushroom flavor to accent the soup. for dinner i had their rock shrimp risotto with autumn vegetables. it was creamy and earthy that complemented very well with the rock shrimp. my wife had the roast chicken which was tender, juicy and full of taste along with sides of corn tamales, salsa, garlic sauteed spinach. for dessert we had the chocolate mousse which was light and fluffy. not so sweet and more of a dark rich chocolate. they have a decent beer selection and wine list. service can be a little spotty sometimes when they're busy, but when they do come to the table it's been pleasant. i recommend this place for the food, beer and ambiance.
