words cannot describe the dinning experience at this institution of hobart's dinning industry! okay it is a pub and don't expect silver service but it is what it is and that is the best steak and chips (if you want chips) in australia! i've been everywhere and nothing comes close, perhaps paris go in rathdowne st but that's completely different. the pepper sauce is to die for and i'm yet to have a bad meal here! living in melbourne i'd often come down just to have a meal here! if you do nothing else in life than visit shippies then you can say you've lived and sampled the greatest steak in the country!

not sure now. i had been to 'shippies' once before and had a wonderful time, food was good, service was good, wait time was good. it was very loud in the restaurant though. overall, my first experience (admittedly about 6 years ago) was great.

the experience i had this past sunday though was very disappointing. the service left a lot to be desired, we were sat next to the bar in the restaurant and the staff were gossiping and joking around very loudly with few people in the restaurant it definitely carried. they also called out to each other from either end of the restaurant. not professional at all.

the food was quite nice save for the vegetables which were so undercooked they were inedible by those who opted out of chips and salad.

i feel like since shippies is such a gem for hobart i can see past the unprofessional staff (they come and go) but i'd like to see an improvement in the food. perhaps the chef was having a bad night.

i got the seafood taster and it was amazing ! good value as well. the platter came with prawns, smoked salmon, natural oysters, squid, scallops, fish, chips and salad.

why do i keep trying this place to see if they have improved? they never have, never will. i ate there tonight, nothing changes! same appalling staff (i timed 7mins before they even noticed me at the bar) that have loud conversations with each other and the regulars while the other customers wait. same overpriced food, over $40 for a steak. meal just plonked on the table with indifference, in front of the boss who did nothing. nobody came to see how it was, nor to clear the table afterwards. no goodbye, just left to wander out. just rubbish. so many fantastic places in hobart, and these guys still don't lift their game. as i said, i keep going back every 6 months or so. never again, tell your friends.

my partner and i came here on our honeymoon, looking for seafood which we got, with gusto! i had a delicious prawn linguini and my husband had the seafood platter which was delicious but probably had a bit too much fried stuff for my liking but was perfectly to his liking! oysters were top notch. would definitely go back!

the portion sizes are quiet large if not a bit too large and some may find it difficult to get through an entree and a main. the food was ok but didn't wow me but enough to go and visit again.

well an amazing old hobart institution with a very very good menu, quality food at great prices. the dishes that we have had tonight are definitely of at least four star restaurant standing both in presentation and taste, service is also exceptional. price on average are around $30 a meal!! great value "pub" meals!!! my only gripe is that with such high level of food maybe the wine list could strive to meet the same standard ..... but new operators give them time👍😀

had a lovely dinner here. the chicken breast stuffed with blue cheese, walnuts and pear was delicious. good sized pub meals. need to book as it gets quite busy.

i’ll say it up front, the shippies is quite possibly my favourite pub in hobart. set in the quaint backstreets of battery point, this is a pub that just oozes charm inside and out. it’s an old-world pub with a classic feel that you could just get lost in all afternoon.

not worth the wait. generous serving sizes and reasonably tasty, but we waited 45 minutes for our meals on a fairly quiet sunday evening. when my husband asked about our meals after half an hour, the waitress replied, "can't you see there are a lot of people here tonight?" only 2 staff in the kitchen and they chatted with waitstaff, while taking their time with the cooking. my order was quite different from as described on the menu, and the vegetables were cold. i saw the cook scooping caramelised onions out of a bucket onto the plate. certainly not worth the price we paid, and not worth the long wait either.

lovely meal. really enjoyed our family dinner here. meals were delicious and decent serving sizes. we dined out on a tuesday evening and the place was very busy, which gave it a great atmosphere. our waitress did warn us before we ordered that there would be a longer than normal wait for our meals. i had one of the best risottos i have had in a long time and it was pleasing to note that they hadn't rushed this dish, even though they were obviously under the pump. pleasing to see they have a separate vegetarian menu. highly recommend the sticky date pudding. staff were very friendly. we were 'walk ins' & i think lucky to get a seat. make sure you ring & book your table (next to the fire is a great spot.

disappointed of melbourne. burnt, badly presented, over-cooked, surly when we complained. this place is a puddle of sh^t and you should save the dollars these guys are overcharging you.

you can do so much better at the numerous places down the road. this is an amateur job, and very poor - chook parma without ham, burnt chilli prawns, bruschetta that was so laughably awful as to be inedible.

stay calm & just don't

nice place, unfortunately we were seated at the back in a corridor(?) so the ambience wasn't that great. the service was quite good; however two waitresses aren't enough to serve so many diners. the crumbed lamb brains with mushroom sauce, and the filet mignon were delicious. porterhouse steak was quite rare even though we asked for medium-rare, but still edible. the caesar salad was alright, but the whole anchovies were a nasty surprise. overall, the meal was quite costly for two, but it was a nice dining experience.
