supposedly they changed the format when they changed the name from aquarium make no mistake their specialty is still sea food. my wife was greeted with a healthy portion of fish while my steak filet looked like something off of the kids menu. when i was asked "how is you dinner" i replied small very small. the waiter replied "well it is a filet" like i had never seen a filet. between the poorly cooked little steak and the rude wait staff. they won't have to worry about me coming in anymore. over priced for the portions received. on a scale from 1 to 10 i give this place a 0

though the name calls to mind a neighborhood watering hole, sammy g’s is more upscale than the moniker lets on. a sister restaurant to fratelli’s italian steakhouse in winston-salem, sammy g’s does what others have tried and failed to do: it gets the dressed up pub/casual fine dining concept right.

pricey, and small portion size for the surf and turf(bourbon steak and shrimp) meal. they advertise a bourbon marinated sirloin and shrimp but it's a small serving of steak. the staff welcomed substitutions on sides. the starch sides are plentiful but unfortunately the "green" sides were lacking in quantity. would i go back? yes, the flavors and service are impeccable. i will make sure i order a regular steak and some shrimp next time though or ask about portion size.

let me start off by saying that i went  into this dinner with a little bit of a bias.  i’m a fan of sammy g’s, i have been craving a particular salad for at least a week now.  i knew it would be delicious.  what is there to review?  i found plenty.  knowing that i would write this (greg said it was my turn), i began to look at the menu and food with a little more depth. upon arrival we were greeted by the nicest hostess  i’ve ever encountered.  the lady remembers us every time we walk through the doors.  “sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came” is the background music in my head.   we’re off to a good start.  she seats us within five minutes.  the restaurant isn’t packed but it is rather early as we have somewhere to be at 8pm.  a nice crowd though. the waiter, brent, arrives wearing a smile and perhaps a bit too much enthusiasm.  it’s early still on a friday; too much coffee i think.  brent is very efficient.  he tells us the special

nice choices for a somewhat upscale lunch. our first time back here since the name change (so many places, so little time) was for lunch today, and it was very enjoyable. little has changed except the name - nicely decorated, solid menu, and very good service - thanks ethan.

we had a very simple lunch - the flounder ($7.59 with a side) grilled, and the tavern salad with sirloin ($12.58). the flounder (a small filet) was nicely & simply cooked, fresh tasting, flavorful. the garden salad as a side was well sized, nice mixtures of greens and veggies, and topped with an excellent blue cheese dressing.

the tavern salad is large, also full of greens and veggies, and the sirloin was perfectly cooked to order, and absolutely delicious - also chose blue cheese for the dressing. very nice lunch with great service. we'll be back.

o'so bad. well, we finally tried this restaurant, and as they say in beligum about the national airline, sabena - such a bloody experience never again. this place is segmented, dimly lit (you needed a flashlite to read the menu), noisy (between the large tables and the mindless music piped in, loudley), with no warmth or character. it is located in one of the myriad of strip centers at the intersection of eastchester & wendover avenue. the place is busy, as are its neighbors, thus parking is a challenge - so it begins.

the place was busy early, with several large gatherings - who they were, and why they were gathering i could not tell. the menus are in place on the tables, so you can begin to study them right away - a good thing, because it was a few minutes before our assigned wait person made her appearence. we ordered a ketttle one on the rocks, a glass of merlot, a crab cake appetizer, prime rib (we were assued it was medium rare), and the jumbo shrimp, fried.

the drinks came quickly, and they pour a nice drink here for $7.25, the ice was definitely second by volume. the merlot was nice as well, 14 hands by name. the salads ( came with the entrees) came out very quickly - nice, large salad with very good blue cheese dressing.

before we were halfway through the salads, the entrees came out - not a ggod sign because in that short a time, these items are neither cooked or even plated to order - the are pre-assemlied, so to speak. the prime rib was overcooked, and simply was not a good cut of meat - the texture was way off, and with no flavor - the color was an off gray, the kind seen at visitations. the onion rigs with this entree were outstanding, by far the best part of the dish - which rang up at $21.95

the jumbo shrimp was moderately breaded, but also overcooked and chewy. the ff were thin and very nice, if rather sparse. the minute serving of slaw was not at all good, dry and with a strange undertaste - total cost, $16.09 - had to take an accountant to come up with this price.

mercifully, the entire experiece was quick - 40 mintues from start to finish, but it seemed much longer. at no time during the 40 minutes did our crab cake appetizer appear, which we felt obliged to point out to our sweet, but unfocused wait person. total cost was $65, about $1.50 a minute, seems overpriced.

this is a packaged, orchestrated setup with ordinary food, overpriced, served in a loud environment - think village tavern, but not nearly as good. a good drink and decent onions rings can be had for less, and in a better setting.

very disrespectful manager. i am never one to write a bad review for a restaurant simply because i understand that sometimes there are "bad" days for everyone. however, the service my friends and i received was something i just could not keep to myself. my girlfriends and i decided to go there for their wine and appetizer special. they normally go every wednesday after work. we were under the impression that from 4-6 apps were half price as well as select wine, again they were regulars and knew the specials. as our waiter came to our table 4 times to ask what we would like to eat he heard us say and ask that we had until 6pm to order apps to get the half price, was never told differently. when we got our bills we noticed they were full price. when we spoke to the manager he was extremely rude and argued with us for 5 minutes with no explanation other than "thats our rule!" apparently to take advantage of the half price apps you have to be physically sitting at the bar (we were sitting in the bar area- just not actually at the bar) no where did it state that you had to be sitting in a certain location to get the special... the worst part was the attitude of the manager/ chef. i have worked in the food industry for years and have never come across a situation where the manager argued with the consumer the way that he did. he was extremely disrespectful. we have also tried to have company luncheons there which the organizing went completely wrong... but thats a whole other story. we will not be returning and we will continue to voice our experience.

outstanding! dined at sammie g's last night and had a great experience. between us, we enjoyed crab bisque, caesar salad, black bean dip, grilled sea bass, and crab cake... not to mention the bread and the best remolaude in town. every item was perfectly prepared and delicious. addionally, we had great service. our server (dema) was super and we met one of the owners (johnny) and the manager (rick), who was super in taking care of us and our reservations. top to bottom, this was a great visit! i highly recommend it!
