best mediterraneanfoodon the west bank. i've driven past sahara cafe several times and finally decided to stop in and give it a try.

i'm so glad i did. i had the gyro plate and my dinner guest had a greek salad with kebob, with lebanese tea to drink. i was hesitant because the price was a little steep (about $12), but the portions were very large, enough to totally fill four pita halves with salad, humus, lamb meat and tahini sauce. (the humus was fantastic, by the way; the best humus i've had in years.) the salad that came with the gyro plate was good, although i'm used to larger chunks of tomato and cucumber--the smaller bits made it easier to fill the pita, though.

the restaurant itself could use some redecorating and atmosphere improvements, but that's the only complaint i have and it's a minor one.

they offer gyros, falafel and shawarma (amongst other items) in smaller sandwich portions, probably better for lunch and a good bit cheaper ($4-$5).

it's now on my list of favorites and highly recommended.

i'm impressed.. my standards for lebanese/mediterraneanfoodare pretty high. in new orleans, lebanon's is usually what i favor, but the wait and lack of parking is a pain in the ass. since we were on the west bank anyway, spouse and i stopped in at sahara since the reviews here sounded good.

i am so glad we did.

it absolutely blew away all the other places i've tried. mona's doesn't hold a candle to sahara.

when we got there, it was empty. the cook was sitting at a table waiting for a customer, and the host/waiter (are they the owners?) was standing around waiting for something to do. we were seated, handed menus, and drink orders were taken. we ordered appetizers. lots of them. it was so cheap, we figured we might as well try a lot of things! spinach pies, falafel, and a giant bowl of hummus and bread. he brought it to the table a few short minutes later. it was fresh and hot and wonderfully flavorful. spinach pies are usually pretty hit or miss, but these were excellent. the sumac added flavor that's generally missing from the ones i've had elsewhere. falafel was amazing, and i don't even like falafel. spouse was very impressed and essentially inhaled them. the hummus was a tiny bit hot (spicy), very smooth, and very lightly lemon-y. the pita was warm and not the least bit tough.

for dinner, we ordered shawarma (chicken and beef) and kafta. holy christ. the portions were very generous, and the salads and their dressing that came with the meats were delicious (another item i usually dislike for being bitter). the kafta was a bit spicy and held together well. my mouth's watering just thinking about it. the shawarma was also excellent. the marinade was tangy. i was unfamiliar with the sauce that came with the kafta. i'm used to a minty and lemony labneh/lebna, but this was somewhat orange? the spouse loved it. i wish i'd thought to ask what it was.

the service was quick and he seemed very happy that we were completely enamored by the restaurant and its food. i highly recommend!

decent. i have eaten here twice because i wanted to give them a second chance. the first time i ate there, i had the kufta and it was over-cooked. i also had falafal, and both the kufta and falafal had a tad too much salt for my taste. the meals come with hummus, salad, and flat bread. the hummus is served with chopped peppers which is tasty. the salad is served with a tasty dressing. the flat bread looks like it is commercially produced and has a bit of a rubbery texture. the second time i ate there confirmed a bit too much salt in the kufta, though thankfully, this batch was not over-cooked so it did taste better. since i got the combination plate, i also had the beef and chicken. the beef was very tough, so i know i would not order that again. the chicken was outstanding. it had a great level of spice and was perfectly cooked. the location is aged (dirty-looking), there is some arabic decor, and arabic music playing. i had good service on both visits with a friendly and pleasant staff. considering the huge volume of places to eat nearby, i'll continue to try other places before returning. if you're looking for halalfoodin the area, this place is not bad.

sahara cafe has the best middle easternfoodin the entire new orleans area. everything on the menu is fantastic and the service is incredible. i will never find any falafel or chicken shwarma as good as sahara cafe's. and the shop next door is the best arab market in town.

my standard. the management and staff is very hospitable with bedside manners. atmosphere gets better and better with each visit. and thefoodhas become my measuring stick for other mid eastern places. in my opinion, no other place on the west bank comes within a 5 mile range to the greatness of the perfected dishes sahara cafe offers. their lebanese tea accented with pine nuts has such a divine taste that it supersedes its maker. if you've never tried mid eastern foods and desire authenticity, you've come to the right place. bring your curiosity and empty stomachs here!

additional review. my brother came in from dallas and i brought him to this restaurant. he is a fan of monas as am i. he ordered the lamb chops. and kibby. he stated that this restaurant is better than monas. big statement here since we both love monas' food. i had the kufta kabob this time. this is the equivelent to monas' lula kabob. it is very good.
hummas is also excellent. i also had kibby and you will like it. i have had middle eastern/mediterneanfoodin many places in texas also and so far sahara and monas are the two best anywhere. i am not overstating this.

great food. i am very careful what i recommend.foodmust be very tastey before i would comment. i have been looking for a middle eastern restaurant on the westbank for a while. the only other mid east restaurant on the westbank was cleopatra and they are not good. sahara cafe is a new restaurant on the west bank and they are very good.thefoodis very tastey and very fresh. i am a huge fan of monas cafe in new orleans. now i am a huge fan of sahara cafe. these guys are almost as good or as good as monas. i need to try some more dishes before i am sure that they are as good as monas. but based on what i have tried so far they are very close.
you wont go wrong here. i am so greatful that these guys have opened up a middle eastern restaurant on this side of the river. i am a big fan of mid east/ medditoraneanfoodand i am a fan of sahara cafe.
