last wednesday was my busiest weekday last week, but even so, i still was able to spend some time with my dad before his flight back home. my afternoon class lets us out an hour earlier compared to the afternoon class from my first semester, so we were able to spend a few, unrushed hours together for dinner. i passed silver lake a few times when riding on one of the city buses during winter break, but it was my first time walking in the neighborhood. the area certainly had a ‘ hipster ‘ vibe, and we thought it would be interesting to visit a nearby supply store before heading to the restaurant nearby. the shop mostly had survival/camping/military-type goods, but there were some highlights…like the hanging camouflage suit! a lol moment! the restaurant, florevegancuisine, was on the same street so we walked on over and found a place to sit inside the small establishment. the seating options outside were not that bad either! we were seated in a booth near the wall and the bakery display—which housed delectable-looking cakes and cupcakes to one side, and produce supply on the other it looks like it was voted “best restaurant” by la weekly back in ’12… there were so many choices, but i chose to get the verde bowl and my dad got the southwestern quesadillas. we also asked for the beet salad as our deli side. while our food was being prepped, my dad and i ended up having a conversation about how the people behind the small business operations (such as the manyveganrestaurants in la)  must really be in the business out of passion more so than profit. after roughly calculating the costs it takes to keep such a small, niche business open, we were amazed by how there are so many restaurants and cafes out there, but we were not surprised that many of them don’t keep their doors open for long…actually, i found out the other day that a restaurant i visited upon first moving to la   had closed—and it happened just like that!  well, hopefully flore has a brighter future, becaus

the mar vista/culver city border isn’t exactly the prettiest part of la, but if you’re sitting outside at sage in the middle of the day, sheltering in the shade and sipping on home-made lemonade, it’s easy to pretend you’re in a garden oasis away from the urban sprawl.  i ordered the brazilian bowl – quinoa, black beans, kale, avocado and guacamole, salsa and big slabs of pan-fried plantains.  in a moment of insanity i ate too much and didn’t leave enough room for kind kreme ice cream.  obviously i just need to go back for aveganice cream date.

mollie engelhart grew up in theveganlifestyle. her dad owns cafã© gratitude (local, organic, veganrestaurants) in la, northern california, and kansas city. mollie never went to culinary school, but has a gene for creating masterful flavor combinations that are mind-blowing for anyveganand foodie alike. she learned mostly from watching her dad cook when she was little. she has a lively personality and loves to talk about her food. the service staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about their fare so don’t be shy if you’re not sure what to order. most people, as did i until a few years ago, believe thatveganfood is just fruits and vegetables. but the winds have shifted and i am just amazed on how good the food tastes and how good you feel afterwards. everything is made fresh daily. sage also has an “icekreme” counter inside called kindkreme. the kreme is made from a coconut milk base that is made fresh every morning by grinding fresh coconuts.   the icekreme is made in

more often than i’d like, i feel likeveganmeals out can easily be rather boring, with little thought to presentation of depth of flavor. the kind of meal where you leave feeling as if it was just okay. at sage, we were pleasantly surprised. our meals were presented beautifully and weren’t just a bowl of flavorless mush. they were both very flavorful and satisfying. if we lived in la, i’m sure we would eat here regularly … yum!

nom. i simply cannot say enough good things about sage.veganfood can often be a bit of a task to enjoy- too much fake meat, too little flavour etc. but sage doesveganfood justice, to the extent that even alex didn’t complain about the lack of meat (or cheese) on the menu. i went to sage on two separate occasions last week, and both times walked away full and happy. in fact, one of my only gripes with the place is that theirveganbowls all seem to have just one too many ingredients…a deep fried jalapeno? macaroni and cheese ball? too much, too much! but since it’s easy to omit items, i found this easy to fix. everything we had at sage was fresh, fast and original; the crispy samosas and brazilian bowl were two all-around favourites. my only other complaint was that the kale was in whole leaves, and therefore difficult to eat with the rest of the dish. let’s be honest- since i’m complaining about leaf size, there clearly wasn’t much that sage did wrong. a must try for anybody- vegan
