man, how do all the patisseries in montreal do it? seems like every place is super cute, charming; rustique is no different.

we dropped by on a monday afternoon to try a fewminitarts/pies. there's many flavours (see the tartes saisonnières board) but also a variety of baked goods and drinks. they even do wedding cakes which i'm sure are divine.

the inside is homey, staff friendly and love the cozy seating area to sit and relax. it's small but they have comfy pillows!

- white orchard and hibiscus iced tea ($3.50) - mo had her own mason jar so they used that to make her drink. can't say i've ever had such a flowery drink before but it didn't have much taste.
- strawberry and rhubarbminipies ($2.25) - a little too much crust to filling ratio but still tasty. they're about two bites worth.
- lemon meringueminipies ($2.25) - filling was delicious. not overwhelmingly sweet. perfect amount to whet your sweet tooth.

this spot fits in perfectly with the rest of its food neighbours. will try a slice of pie next time!

so freakin' good! thesemini2-bite pies are the cutest and tastiest treats around. the buttery delicious smell hits you in the face the second you walk in. very cute café/bakery in the st-henri area on notre-dame. worth it if you're in the area, and great if you're looking for something unique to bring to a dinner party!

rustique calls themselves a “country pie stand” but they’ve got a lot more going on than just pies. i first heard about this adorable sud-ouest bakery after watching the hilarious day of gluttony: 24 montreal restaurants in 24 hours video, in which it was featured. we popped in on a saturday afternoon and quickly found ourselves involved in a serious pastry situation.

the location itself is pretty tiny and well, rustic! there is plenty of wood paneling, chalk boards, and various beautiful items that embody the country feeling of the space. the glass cases full of baked treasures can easily throw off anyone’s good judgement. just one little treat? how about three? how about twelve? the space is beautifully perfect and completely channels everything that this place is about. they only have a small handful of tables available to sit at, so if you intend to stay you might need to have a bit of luck on your side.

of course rustique’s main focus is on pies and they offer a rotating selection of delicious seasonal flavours. you could buy any one of their full-sized pies and end up very, very pleased with yourself. but the other thing that they have lots of are variousminipies, bars, scones, and cookies. we decided to grab warm beverages and go the route of the tiny treat.

i picked a chai latte, my usual go-to and favourite. i liked this chai because it wasn’t too sweet and it didn’t taste too over processed. it probably could have been slightly stronger for my taste, but it was a happy match for my desserts.

gazing through the glass, we made our selections from all of the little gleaming gems available. there was a lot to choose from! we grabbed a whippet bar, wunderbar bar, pistachio cheesecake crumble, boston creamminipie, appleminipie, and bonfire crumble. we sat down and figured that we’d just try a few of them and then bring the rest home. ha! ...we devoured every single one.

i really love that they make tiny pies so that you can have a small taste of pie without having to buy an entire large one. their crust is light and flaky, buttery and delicious. the apple pie filling was exactly what a classic apple pie should be, juicy apples bathed in tons of cinnamon. meanwhile, the mix of chocolate and custard in the boston cream could not possibly be wrong. the crumbles were great as well, albeit a bit more difficult to eat. the graham cracker crusts really did crumble all over the place! i loved the delicate and creamy flavours of the pistachio cheesecake and the bonfire was very interesting, a take on a s’more! hidden underneath the toasted marshmallow was chocolate, of course, and it really did taste like the campfire classic. my favourite though, were the bars. the whippet was similar to those puffy cookies that you can buy at the grocery store, except way better obviously! caramel and marshmallow was enrobed in chocolate and the whole thing was soft and luscious. but my absolute #1 was the wunderbar bar. oh wow. it’s haunting my dreams. this bar is a spin on the wunderbar chocolate bar and all of the same components are present; creamy peanut butter, light crisps and chewy caramel. except that this one is a million times better than the candy bar variety. one bite and i was in heaven! it’s chocolately and peanut buttery, yet somehow light and crispy, and then the caramel is helping to bind everything together... if this had been the only thing that i had tried at rustique it would have been worth the visit.

everything was so good and i will surely be craving their baking very soon. (who am i kidding? i already am.) this is the kind of place where you might want to show up earlier rather than later, because the best stuff will probably start to sell out. once our box was empty we weren’t sure what to do... so we went back up and completely filled it again! this time the items actually came home with us...

march 13, 2015 mins in honor of pie day, march 14th, 2015 (3.1415…) : located at a 5 min walk from place-st-henri metro station,  rustique  is famous for its various pies. cozy, warm and welcoming, how can you not walk into this shop? big pies if you know what you like, coffee, a small seating area. i love pies. i had to control myself or else i would have bought everything. honestly, don’t bring your wife or your kids or your loved ones here; they’ll never want to leave. or small pies if you like everything. they had 12 different kinds ofminipies on display!!! after countless debates (and a lot of awing), i picked 2 of each of these: vanilla cherry cheesecake  in a chocolate crust: so creamy and just the right amount of sweetness and gooeyness peanut butter cup pie:  a bit dry but still tasty lemon meringue pie: is my definition of a cutie pie ! i fell in love. and i made a special request for 2  flat whites. they also have other goodies that i’m bound to come back to try. i would  definitely go back : to try all their pies for their great and lovely service – it really makes all the difference in making customers feel welcome and at home rustique is  best for : dates and small groups of up to 4 people it’s diverse pie

will pies be the next big thing? rustique is one of the very few places specializing in pies. you can find whole pies as well as miniature ones. there are over twenty flavours to choose from - some are classics, some are seasonal and some are inventive. theminipies are perfect if you are the type of person who enjoy sampling. they cost $1.95 each or $20 for 12. i was meeting up with my friend jess for breakfast . we each ordered two pies. i went for the classics - pears and apples. the crust is flaky and golden brown. the fillings were tart yet not too sweet. reminds me of eating a (chausson aux pommes). my friend had the berry crumble and the lemon meringue pie. both have the taste we were looking for in these comforting desserts. afterwards, i ordered a box of 12 pies with 4 creative varieties for take-out - peanut butter cups, pumpkin meringue, boston cream and apple-cinnamon cheesecake. each pie has a corresponding crust that fits with the texture and flavours associated to the dessert. the boston cream has a crust that is doughnut-like while the cheesecake has a graham crust. overall, all of them were enjoyable to eat. hard to decide on our favourite as they were equally as tasty. a point worth mentioning, few of the pies were difficult to remove from its shell. we ended up using a spoon. rustique does not only serve pies, but also other sweet treats like nanaimo bars, chocolate-coated meringues, coconut macaroons, etc... it definitely worth revisiting this to try out their seasonal varieties. pear and apple pies berry crumble and lemon meringue pies  apple-cinnamon cheesecake and boston cream pies rustique pie kitchen 4615 rue notre-dame o. montreal, qc h4c 1s3 514-439-5970 http://rustiquepiekitchen.com/

rustique is a small bakery in the sud-ouest, in griffintown, on notre-dame. a few tables are set up in the front window for customers to enjoy their baked goods like brownies, muffins, and cookies, along with their coffee. at the counter, you’re treated to a sea ofminipies, regular-sized pies and other baked goods, all made on-site.

any place that uses a pie as its logo is alright by me however, once you enter the bakery, you realize very quickly that rustique is definitely not just a pie place. all manners of large pies, minipies, caramel popcorn, peanut brittle, cookies, brownies…. a sweet tooth’s delight. we came away with a box of 6minipies, caramel popcorn and two marshmallow cookies sandwiches. the marshmallow sandwiches were quite good. delicious homemade marshmallow of a perfect consistency stuck between the two cookies – either chocolate chip or peanut butter. the cookies themselves were quite good although i wished the peanut butter ones were softer. they were a little too dry compared to what i really love as a

i have to say that my experience was very lackluster. i tried a few of the bars andminipies; they were all not to my friends and my tastes. we found a long dark hair in the chocolate mint bar and found the prices too high for the lack of quality.
