excellent french fries

had dinner delivered from royal tavern, first time that i had had their food. the chicken miso sandwich was very good, but the french fries were the highlight of the meal. so flavorful!

september 22, 2015 · by willoughbyandy · in burgers, northeast, pennsylvania · leave a comment. known for my exceptional timing, i arrived in the city of brotherly love, four days ahead of the pope.  the airport and every street sign was welcoming the pontiff and on tuesday night, the police were in full preparation mode.  the first place i headed to for dinner (in fairmount), i couldn’t get near, at first, as the first three streets i tried to get down were closed.  then, when i eventually got close, all of the “empty” parking spots were prohibited by temporary police order.  after half an hour, i gave up and headed downtown to the royal tavern, instead.

the rt, as we call it, has been a favorite spot since we moved into the neighborhood 7 years ago. the vegan nachos are the ultimate late-night binge food. it has a dark, pubby vibe, but the food has always been good. brunch options are great, too.

this place was recommended to me and my family by a local. it's not a place you would just walk into off the street as a family (think dive bar). but this is the place to eat in philly. the mussels were divine. and we are a family who is picky about our mussels. the burger is fantastic. get it with fries or the mashed potatoes (sounds weird, but it's awesome). they have great beers and dinner specials. the service is attentive and friendly. they also accommodated my cold mother by turning down the air unit near us. it's also nice that they have a menu that accommodates the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. all around a great experience and meal.

what i know is that the burger was really worth the visit. what started out as a tentative visit turned out to be one that was another highlight to a memorable trip.

tavern is a good place to hang out with coworkers, clients and colleagues looking for upscale, very good bar fare and to get a feel for a good, fun philly neighborhood hangout. it’s an aggressive walk from center city hotels so i suggest dressing down a bit and taking a cab. woman business travelers would enjoy an evening her

despite the cloyingly- hipsterish atmosphere, the service was very friendly and the food was quite good. the duck confit potato skins were decadent and tasty, though the comfit itself was a bit dry. my two companions and i also shared the " small" nachos with began beef. they were fairly good if not a bit unremarkable, but they were way more than enough for three. the tempeh club was very tasty and,again, gigantic. the only real disappointment was the angus buyer. the aioli that it came with was piquant and delicious, however the burger itself was on the dry side and pretty bland. overall, good bar food, diverse menu and decent prices.

it changed my definition of a good burger. the front is very unassuming and you can easy walk right pass it. as you read the menu you realize that you walked into a new world. my friend and i happened upon it at brunch time. we shared a dogfish head theobroma, bacon bloody mary, an augus burger and french toast with dulce de leche.

the burger had bacon, caramelized onions, smoked gouda, pickled longhots, chile mayonnaise. every bite you tasted something a bit different. it wasn't about a hook it was just great beef and amazing toppings that will easily make us drive 3 hours to get more.

everything was amazing!

i had the meatloaf sandwich with a side of tots. it was delicious. the popcorn was good, too. i washed it all down with a couple of pints of yards brawler. i've heard the tempeh club is good, too ... even though it's vegan. i'll have to make a return trip to find out for myself.

used to be so much better, but still good. i dig how they offer vegan options and the bloody marys are a meal in themslves.

dig their brunch.. great spot for brunch, with better than average food. the atmosphere is casual with a stellar jukebox full of up and coming artists. recommend the breakfast burrito ($10), chock full of eggs, peppers, onions; very tasty and filling, plus served with a full plate of sides.
