unbelievable. my wife and i went to restaurant iris for our second anniversary and i'm about to say something about it which i have never said about any other restaurant at which i have eaten, and i don't say this lightly. restaurnt iris may have the best food i have ever eaten in my life... seriously. there, i've said it.
for starters, i had the lobster "knuckle sandwich", and it is absoutely to die for. the flavors were magical. my wife had a salad of local greens with cheese stuffed red peppers with a kudzu jelly dressing. this dressing is apparently made from the flowers of the kudzu plant, which are only available for a short period of time during the year. it was wonderful.
"to continue", i had the diver sea scallops with turnip greens, allen benton's bacon, and mushrooms. the layers of flavors were so wonderful and intense, that i can only describe taking a bite as sensual. my wife had the "surf and turf" which is a 14oz new york strip with bleu cheese and normally, fried oysters. she opted for shrimp instead. i can't remember tasting a better steak.
for desert, we chose the creme brulee. the sugar was carmalized to a perfect crunch. again, another knockout, unbelievable.
chef kelly most graciously and unintrusively made the rounds and came by everyone's table to personally greet and make sure that the food was to everyone's liking. of course, there were no complaints. the restaurant manager, jeff frisby, personally selected half glasses of wine which he paired with each dish. his choices were impeccable.
keep an eye on restaurant iris and eat there as soon as you can. if you haven't, you really don't know what you are missing. chef kelly is destined to be a culinary superstar.
of all of the wonderful things about restaurant iris, the best is that it's in my hometown and i can eat there often!
don't forget to make reservations and make them as many days in advance as possible. it's hard to get a table there and there's a reason why.
