wasn't trying to be harsh.. woah, woah. settle down with the caps! i was just suggesting an idea, that's all, man. and, yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. i guess it's just that i like to speak to owners of new establishments to get info, background, etc. to help me understand the place a little more (restaurant, or not). and i was suggesting maybe you try that. sorry for trying to give an idea to help with the conclusion. truly am.

great, don't know what joe was talking about. first of all, who goes into an english pub and orders a burger?!? that is beyond me. i would think if one wants to experience english fare, they would order english fare. that is just me, though....? in any case, we have been there 4 times, and have not been disappointed. we have had the chicken tikka masala (which was delicious), the fish andchipswere wonderful. the curry was perfect. love how thechipsare cooked. even thechipsand curry sauce (spicy) were wonderful! one night the special was a beef brisket dinner. we tried that, even, and were amazed at the tenderness, and amazing taste. fried picklechipsare grand, even the sauce they are served with. i have yet to try the scotch eggs, shepherd's pie, and blanket bangers. i have heard, however, that the burgers are great. i do want to try the chicken picotta. have heard great reviews on that one, as well. as far as the rlgh starting out without beer..... many places go through that. deal with it. all in all the rlgh is a great addition to fountain square, and i see them staying for quite some time. way to go, rlgh!!! so, my other review was deleted. it was just an afterthought about the "ambiance" and deco in rlgh. maybe it's not decorated because they are just starting out! joe, did you ever take the time to speak with one of the owners there?? i'm sure if you had taken the time to do that, they would have been more than happy to talk about their new beginnings. maybe next time you should opt to speak with the owner of a new business about the "ambiance", and deco, before coming to your own conclusion. just an idea.

had another decent meal here. had the scotch eggs and they were still the best we've tasted! the patty melt was pretty good. have had slightly better at another pub we frequent. the mac & cheese was good and a large serving but felt it was way over priced for what it was. pics included. enjoy! 20160429

scotch eggs here were some of best i've had! the cheese sticks were humongous and a little too much cheese, we ended sending back. the meatloaf sandwich was extremely flavorful and plenty. the chicken &chipswas juicy and breading was good. chips(fries) were a little soggy and slightly flavorful. we'll definitely be back. pics included. enjoy! 20151226

solid dining for a solid location. experimented here for my birthday. nice atmosphere, sarah was my waitress, who is kinda yelp famous. she was friendly enough, timely and unintrusive, basically all you could ask for from your waitress.

we tried, the scotch eggs, bangers n mash, fish n chips, shepherd's pie, and tikka masala.

from worst to first:

the tikka masala was pretty run-of-the-mill. didn't really offer anything, but its indian food at a bar. what can you expect?

the shepherd's pie was decent enough, but nothing special. ground beef with potatoes on it. very hearty like you'd expect.

the scotch eggs were something i'd never had before. they were interesting and not what i expected. crunchy but definitely solid with some salt on em.

the fish nchipswere 50/50. the fish was excellent, not too much breading, but the breading was delicious. thechipswere burnt and lacked any flavor. i noticed them swimming in ketchup when they were cleaned up later. though the tots are supposedly good. so maybe substitute those next time.

the bangers n mash was superb! came out lukewarm, but once it was heated up-- pow! the winning dish and what i'll be getting if i happen into this place again. the sausage was lean and flavorful, no gristle.

the beer menu seemed quite extensive with beers from across the pond, not all super well-known. though, we opted for bottled beer, i forgot to try the copper mugs.

one of my new favorite places. i must admit, i wasn't really eager to go to red lion when i looked at the menu online, but my husband insisted that it was good. he was right. i have visited three times in the last four weeks. the service was exceptional each time, which always surprises me these days. i was surprised to see other reviews stating that they had poor service. they work as a team, so it isn't always your server picking up plates or bringing you more water. i have really loved all of the following foods at red lion - meatloaf, chicken tikka masala, chicken pot pie, chipsand curry, bangers and mash and of course the elephant ear. i would highly recommend trying the red lion.

great spot in one of indy's only original places!. ate with my wife on a sunday a little after noon. place was about 3/4ths full, not bad considering fountain square is a fri/sat type of place.

wife and i started with the scotch eggs and fried picklechips. can't vouch for their other pub food (shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, etc), but they've got fried food down to a science! picklechipswere perfect, pickley flavor shown through the fried flavor and the fresh dill dipping sauce was delicious! first time having the scotch eggs in my life, absolutely delicious as well. eggs perfectly cooked, outer coating of sausage and filler very flavorful.

for our entrees, we had the buffalo chicken sandwich and the fish and chips, both of us had fries as the side. sandwich was huge, hand breaded, and fried to perfection. wife is addicted to buffalo flavored anything, and she absolutely loved it. fish andchipswere the best i've ever had... two massive fillets of cod or haddock, hand battered, along with what looked like homemade cole slaw, and homemade fries. everything was cooked about as perfect as you could get it. both of us couldn't finish our meals, but we left incredibly happy. :)

also had a sun king wee mac and a triton railsplitter ipa... both delicious, locally brewed beers that topped off a great lunch at a great spot. didn't eat a thing the rest of the day!

nothing bad.....just not great. went with a group for lunch today. service was friendly and prompt. i had the spicy curry chicken sandwich with chips. the chicken was marinated in curry as advertised and grilled, though not very spicy. i would have liked more than a thin slice of half ripe tomato on the sandwich and the roll could have been grilled or toasted.chipswere nice with malt vinegar. others had 2 of the burgers and fish and chips. again, fine....but nothing to get excited about. would i go back? yes if thats where everyone else wanted to go, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

can't wait to go back!. update: order thechipswith spicy curry sauce and get extra curry sauce. i am a lover of yellow curry and this sauce was so awesome. i could have drank it! also, the burgers are pretty good as well. my husband got the black and bleu burger and he loved it. it was perfectly cooked to medium, as requested, and it was juicy. i am stuck on the blanket bangers and chips, so i of course still have not tried anything different.

when i came upon groupon's deal of the day about a month or so ago, i saw red lion grog house, and thought "hey, i have heard of that place." i looked it up on here and decided that it was definitely worth trying, so i bought the groupon. i have to say that i am really glad i did and i believe my husband is to. the owner was there, at least i think that's who he was, and he was very polite and kind and making sure everyone there was enjoying their meals. i love that they had a couple of sun king beers on tap and i love love love the location. i may be a sucker for nostalgia-type atmospheres and it was my first time in the fountain square area, but the area is super cool and hip. in fact, radio radio is an awesome music venue right around the way that we visited as well, but that's a different review. back to red lion grog house.....we started off with the scotch eggs and wowza! they were addicting and quite honestly you could put an egg on anything i would probably slurp it up. it was accompanied with a chili aoli and they had just perfect amount of a little heat in each bite. i ordered the blanket bangers withchipsand my husband wanted to try the fish and chips. i couldn't finish my bangers but they were soooo good and they phyllo that was wrapped around them made them even more amazing. i am a huge fan of mcniven's fish and chips, so i stray away from anyone elses, but my husband did give me a taste and they were pretty good. he devoured them and ate one of my blanket bangers. i also love that they are a family-friendly pub as evidenced by all the moms and dads with their little ones in high chairs. we have a little one, so it's nice to know i don't have to get a sitter for her when i want to come back. the only thing that turned me off is the smell of the fryer which is very strong since a lot of the foods on the menu seem to be fried, but that is really the only thing that i didn't really like. the server was very nice as well and i can't wait to go back for some scotch eggs and to try something else on the menu.

good fish, great chips. have visited the red lion only once but will return. the fish andchipswere good; fish light and flaky but a bit oily, while thechipswere outstandingly good. made from fresh cut potatoes, they were perfectly cooked, hot and tasty. they even tasted good cold, as i nibbled the last few before my plate was removed. folks at the next table had the shepherd's pie and it looked and smelled great; think i'll try that on my next visit.

an interesting stop. i don't get into indy much when i come to visit, so we thought we would check this place out for something different. i'm glad we did!

the french onion soup was really good! fish andchipswere good though the fish was a little on the oily side. nobody could keep their paws off my hand cut fries though! my dad got the shepherd's pie... first off, it was cottage pie. it had ground beef, not lamb. with that being said it was really good! this is the first pie i've had that they actually used fresh herbs on the top with the cheese before throwing it into the salamander. i think that sent it over the edge for all of us!

the waitress was friendly enough (not overly great enough to remember though - there were a few times she mentioned that she didn't understand why they were doing things a certain way). my biggest issue is that their website shows their daily drink specials. we went on wednesday, so we all ordered cider since it should have been $4. needless to say the manager / owner didn't bother to come out to tell us himself that those prices are subject to change. the waitress said that she wished they would changed that since it's pretty out of date.

i'd probably try this place again if they were to update their website on a more regular basis.

... ruined fish andchipsfor me!. my wife and i have eaten here several times, most recently, this past monday evening. as i enjoyed my guiness draft, my wife was eating her fish and chips. she was very hungry and i was indecisive, so our server, brooke, brought out my wife's usual dinner order. i was shocked when she said "this has ruined fish &chipsfor me!" i looked at her quizzically and she continued "... 'cause i can't eat it anywhere else now!"

i had the waltimate burger, cooked to a lovely medium-rare. bacon, peanut butter, jalepenos ... mmm! they also indulged me and gave me a side of their mac and cheese, but let me add bacon and top it with a fried egg. everything was delicious.

everytime we have been there, the service has been excellent, relative to the volume of business they are doing. this was no exception. brooke was attentive, the entire staff accomadated our quirky requests.

thank you and keep up the great work.
