great burger, fries, and house-made chips. the kitchen is small and orders do back up so don't expect a fast lunch. friendly, cheerful bartender. decent neighborhood bar type atmosphere, the bras on the rafters are gone but it still has the look and feel of an old working mans' bar. we will be making it a regular stop. definitely worth checking out.

excellent service and food!. my husband and i went for a late dinner and were really impressed. the bar seems like a local favorite, and though it was fairly busy the bartender/waiter was friendly and attentive. large portions - we shared a great club sandwich with the homemade chips (freshly made and still hot... so good!)
definitely will visit again.

patty melt & clam chowder goood. walked over from the riverwalk inn where we were staying to do a take out order. it was ready when promised. the food was plentiful. the patty melt was good, the rye bread was delicious! the waffle fries were good, as were the broccoli and cheese bites and the order of onion rings were made with homemade beer batter and a huge amount. the chowder had lots and lots of clams. i liked it all. no complaints. the tavern has some history to it and is quaint. exactly what you expect from an historic building on the coast.

barnacles and burgers. the oldest bar this side of the rockies and proud of it; portway is a 'take it or leave it' dive with a healthy mix of life preservers and bras adorning its ceiling and walls. i presumed the preservers were to save you from drowning in your drink while the bras were left for the imagination to run away with. anyhow, we went here twice. first for drinks, and then, the next day for lunch. the lady tending bar warmed up to us on our return visit, after giving us a little taste of the tourist indifference on our first go around. the reason we came back was for their burgers, which we were assured by a couple of local gals the evening before, were probably the best in town.
having our drinks before us, we set task to the menus. after discovering they were a third pound of hand pressed chuck, i went straight for the jalapeno pepper jack burger with waffle fries($9), while the wife kept it simple with a straight up cheeseburger and house made potato chips ($7.50). i'll cut to the chase; damn good burgers. charbroiled, cooked to medium, this was a honest to goodness, straight up bar burger like they used to make them before everyone started switching over to frozen patties. it reminded my wife of the burgers she would get in bars in michigan when she was growing up. we have good burgers in portland too, dont get me wrong, but it was nice to order one that didnt come with a pedigree and a certificate of eco-friendliness. their chips were pretty tasty as well. overall, we were happy campers and glad we came back.

disappointed. perhaps it is because the coast of oregon is overflowing with the finest sea food venues on the planet, or perhaps it is because no one is eager to flip a burger at the portway; whatever the case, during my two visits excuses were offered for not having the cubby hole of a kitchen staffed by a bartender best described as cranky.

dive bar with good burgers. the place is a hole and proud of it (bras hanging from the rafters... really?). they also feature karaoke... why? but they also serve a good bowl of chowder and a very good burger. not to mention a good collection of beer and a mean cocktail (i am not sure they even have wine). on the negative side i tried to stop and get a burger and a beer at 8:00 at night but the grill was closed???
