porkie's original barbeque: when in apopka. porkie's is located in the hub (i.e. main street/u.s. 441) of apopka. i stopped by last week for a quick bite before tubing down rock springs. it's a no-frills joint- and i like it that way when it comes to southern barbeque. my concern, and so should yours, was only how good the bbq would taste.

porkie's didn't disappoint. i had a lunch special for $8.50, which entailed a pulled pork sandwich, a choice of 2 sides, and included a non-alcoholic drink. judiciously heaped, compressed pork on a soft bun completed the task of my satiation. themeatitself was flavorful of charred smoke and was slightly on the drier side. the sides- we ordered 2 separate plates- were good too (mac-n-cheese, bbq beans, and seasoned taters). i did, however, love the collard greens. they were cooked perfectly- slowly rendered for several hours with generous amounts of pork, it was soft and each bite was absent of that tough plant fiber which ideally shouldn't belong in there anyway. they also gave me some pepper vinegar to douse the collards with. it imparted a tart and spicy twist to an already delicious side.

the service was exceptional. granted that they weren't packed, at least two different staff members stopped by each table to check and see if everything was working well. on another note, they have a variety of sauces- including that carolina vinegar kind... i call it 'dip'. ranging from mild-sweet to xxx, they were all good but not too sweet. i actually liked that, but some southern boys would probably care for the sauce to be sweeter.

in a nut shell: reasonable price-points for good food. staff members are friendly and will gladly assist you in narrowing down your choices when they ring-up your order at the counter. try the different sauces they have- chili-heads will love the mean, spicy ones.

i agree with the thuy tran review. $ 32.00 combo for 2 huh!!! ohh really was it a combo for 2 somalians ...... 4 ribs literally 4 bones(lengthwise dollar bill) with a littlemeat2 drinks and 2 sides,is all it was.it probably didn't even weigh 1&1/2 lbs total. it looked like an apocalyptic food is scarce type portion.it definitely wasn't a meal for 2 ,god i wished i had taken a picture. ill be proud to say i didn't tip and wont be going back.i felt like i should have bent over the table ,and let them finish the ramming they started at the cash register.the food was okay , nothing by far to rave about,as ms.tran said in her review the ribs did taste like ham . portion and price don't match by far...... 32$ all the food was portioned for 1 person not 2. total rip off !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wont be going back there ever!!!!!! look at the parking lot do you ever see that place packed besides bike night ? i sure don't....... i believe i know why.

i don't know why or how this place got such good reviews. i live in apopka and always drive past this place wondering why i hadn't tried it yet. i wish i just kept wondering. went there today with my brother, hungry and excited. i got the 2meatcombo with ribs and brisket with mac n cheese and baked beans as sides. my brother got the "baby back" plate with fries as his side. with 2 drinks and $32 later, this was by far the worst bbq i have ever had. i had no idea bbq could even get that bad. all of the bbq sauces in the bottles tasted old. how does that even happen?? they all either tasted like old oil or salsa. salsa. i haven't even scratched the surface. when my brother's ribs came out i was like uh did they get your order wrong? because they were not baby back. when compared to mine yes they were a bit smaller in size, but they just tried to use a smaller size rack of regular ribs and call them "baby back." he said they literally tasted like ham. not tender. and you know it's that bad when i could tell by just looking at this fries that they were gross. they looked old and dry. my ribs were a bit more tender than his, but the outer crust of themeatwas like leather, as if they had just reused leftovermeatfrom the previous day. the brisket was chopped like toddler food and was bland. the mac n cheese was way over cooked and mushy. the beans were definitely canned. throwing in a few chunks ofmeatin it isn't going to fool me. seriously, don't ever go here. you're better off at sonny's bbq. yep, that bad. i'm sticking to 4rivers.

mediocre. the monsters always recomend this place and rave about it so we checked it out. ordered two monster prime rib sandwiches; comes with two sides for $10.99 or french fries. i got black eyed peas and dirty potatoes, husband got mac n' chesse and baked beans. the sandwiches came and it was large with the filling spilling over all over the place so for me it was a knife and fork situation. themeatwas chewy and had a nice smokey flavor to it but that was it, i would say it didn't even have salt on it, just no taste. it was the kind of meat/taste quality i would expect from a applebees, not disgusting but not tasty. i had to cover it in bbq sauce (which was good).
the black eyed peas were not seasoned either but they were creamy. the dirty potatoes were delicious, i ate all of them. my husband got mac n' cheese and it had the weirdest taste to, almost sour, i wonder if it was old. the baked beans were okay but sonny's is far superior.
all of the bbq sauces we tried were tasty.
the service was friendly and attentive.
overall we wouldn't seek porkies out again but if we were in the neighborhood and someone else wanted to go there we wouldn't object either.
