really more like bronze. e: pita golden pocket will not win the gold medal in theshawarmasweepstakes, but it is not out of the medals' contention given the dearth of good arabic sandwiches in the area. i announce pita golden pocket the winner of the bronze medal forshawarmasandwiches. the restaurant has better and biggershawarmathan hanna's or rifca, but ali baba and pita & grill are still better choices - yet at least 40 minutes' drive away.
the owner insisted on serving theshawarmawith his own hand-crafted, home-made, pride-of-the-house, best-thing-ever hot sauce, which apparently is mandatory for first-time visitors, and it was a good choice actually . i am not sure about the other sauce option, but this one is a decent zinger.
the sandwich itself is huge. writing a modern instant classic opera, driving a suv and appearing classy, looking cool in chaps and holding this restaurant'sshawarmain one's hands and not have it fall apart because it is so big are just a short list of impossibilities for the day. the sandwich is also packed. the meat was inconsistent in that some of it was medium cooked, while other morsels were thoroughly grilled. i like more lefet (pickled turnips) in my sandwich however.
the falafel was soft. apparently, it is not too deep fried and does not have the thickest of coatings.
theshawarmasandwich is $7.50 and obviously bigger than rifca's, which costs $6.50.

a: the restaurant resembles any other diner. the size is average for an establishment of this sort, but most customers are there for take-out (which was my case as well).
the plaza along highway 7 is as soulless, commercial and ugly as any along highway 7, in vaughan or in the toronto area. would it kill these businesses and slum plaza lords to plant a tree, a bush, a hedge or limit the commercial roadside signs to, say, 25?

t: parking is, of course, never a problem so feel free to drive all your cars over. inside things might be a tad slower given the apparent popularity of pita golden pocket especially for take-out.
-s: the owner is apparently friendly and jovial. he is proud of his handiwork and not shy to call it "fantastic" or assure you that you will be back. and if he omits the pledge one of the customers waiting for his take-out might make it up by telling you, "if you eat here you won't go anywhere else." firstly, presumably the reference exclusively was to treks forshawarmaor other arabic foods. secondly, yes, i would. for bettershawarmai would eat downtown (although naz's has now closed) or in mississauga, but that is if i were in those areas in the first place.
aside from cocky and talkative-happy service the owner was happy to share a free falafel sample while one waits for the order to be readied.
pita golden pocket has been on location for over six years. the owner is not arabic - he is an uzbek jew – and as such calling the restaurant arabic might or might not be accurate. the food might be arabic, but the owner is not. as such, perhaps ‘middle eastern’ makes more sense. never mind, what counts is the food and for that sisyphus rolls a bronze medal up the hill.
