absolutely wonderful dining experience right from the reservation stage ... making a booking was a breeze whether it's through the restaurant's website or through phone ... warmly greeted upon arrival and wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable with pushing you to order more food or expensive drinks ... tried 2 mains ... rotisserie chicken and lamb rack ... both were done to perfection and finished with 2 desserts ... will definitely return

classic french fair. everything was cooked perfectly and the service was attentive. it lacked a wow factor for me. wine list, especially the australian wines, pretty limited and average. staff seemed more concerned with up selling than providing an experience. these are small gripes but when you are dropping 300 clams on a meal for two you want to walk away with a bit more of a lasting memory then i did.

went to philippe last night for my birthday dinner. had a lovely night but there were a few negatives.
positives- the quality of the food. i ordered the wagyu tartare with horseradish cream for entree, the rockling with fennel purée and spinach for main and the chocolate and caramel fondant for dessert. the tartare was delicate and i loved the combo of capers and the horseradish cream. the rockling was delicious and perfectly cooked. and the chocolate fondant had a brilliant oozing centre. the venue itself is also elegant and an open kitchen is always a winner in my books.
now on to the negatives- we had an 8:15 reservation but when we arrived on time the girl unapologetically told us to leave because our table wouldn't be ready for another 20 minutes. wasn't very impressed with that considering we had a booking. there was also a mix up with our order. our table ordered two tartares- i asked to have mine mild because i don't have a great chilli tolerance. however, my dining companion ordered hers spicy. but after three times of me asking the waiter if he was sure that he'd given me the mild i still ended up with the spicy. it was far too hot for me and unfortunately really affected my overall enjoyment of the dish. i also felt that the meals came out a bit too fast. kind of got the sense we were being rushed even though there was no need given that we had the table for the rest of the night.

this place has been on my list for yonks! finally got to go here for a birthday dinner and it was definitely worth the wait. menu was small but all dishes were done very well. the duck main was absolutely the best duck i've ever had - it was one of those dishes you never wanted to finish because you'd be sad when it was all gone. will definitely go back to eat the same dishes over and over again

walked in off the street because of the sign in front promising cocktails and cheese. expected a bar, but walked down into a gorgeous restaurant (that we were completely underdressed for). the waiters were still lovely and we got some amazing cocktails and a cheeseboard to share at the bar on the side of the restaurant. some great flavour combinations in the cocktails; raspberry and champagne, vodka/cucumber/citrus, coffee/chocolate/cream, gin/rosemary. the cheese selection was great too. not bad for a spontaneous find!

since the exciting news earlier this year that philippe mouchel was back, i've been waiting for the perfect occasion to dine at philippe and tonight was the night.  as you walk down the stairs into the restaurant, you are greeted by the sight of the rotisserie and meats - indeed, the decor and atmosphere is classic and quintessentially français.
i was absolutely impressed by the knowledge, attention to detail, skill and most importantly passion of all the staff - from the person greeting us at the door, to our waiters for the night and of course monsieur mouchel himself.  despite a busy friday night, he took the time to greet and talk to every single diner at every table throughout the night - it may seem like a little thing but it certainly added a great deal to what was already an exquisite evening.   it was lovely to also see him looking over everything to come out of the kitchen and add a little touch of finesse here and there, as well as serving guests too!  as for the food - divine as usual!  the beetroot cured king salmon was a particular jewel of the menu, as was the chocolate fondant!  every dish was perfectly put together - not only a delicious meal, but a piece of art as well.  i cannot speak highly enough of philippe - surely one of the gems in melbourne's ever-growing dining scene.

philippe, a little hidden gem! french, one of my favourite cuisines. my partner once tried their famous chicken rotissoire a long time ago, and one spontaneous night he decided he was craving some expensive chicken haha a beautiful, romantic restaurant and i loved the decor at the entrance. service was on point, super friendly, knowledgable and attentive staff. food was absolutely amazing, most immaculate tender chicken breast ever (of course for that price), the skin was stuffed with mushrooms and it brought so much flavour to the chicken breast it was superb. what a memorable night. the snails, de-shelled, were good but i found them a little too salty.

i was so excited to try this place out and booked 6 weeks in advance but i was made to feel embarrassed and humiliated in front of friends.i don't claim to know about wines but when the australian waiter (a wannabe french waiter more suited to the pompous unfriendly atmosphere of france-soir) asked what i wanted to drink i replied the bordeaux (sauternes) not realising it was a sweet dessert wine (urgh do i really have to serve these people??). well he made everyone realise how ridiculous i was and so i quickly said "pinot noir". (you stuuuuuupid woman!!!)
he immediately told me that if in fact i wanted a bordeaux then the last thing i would be wanting would be a pinot noir as it's nothing like the same wine. (scum!! scum!!! you don't deserve to be in this restaurant!)
5 minutes in and totally put off the place. from that moment on i think we were considered as commoners and had to ask for things such as bread & water (yesssssss i'll go get you some if i must) which was being handed out to everyone. food was good but i can't remember what i had apart from this embarrassing incident.
after speaking to friends they said they couldn't understand why the sauternes wine was put on the red wine list and also why it wasn't on a dessert wine list. i was never so rude to point out (but will do now mwahahahaha!!) that the oeuf à la neige had the accent in the wrong direction on their website.
i will not be back, weirdly i prefer friendly places that take their time to chat and have fun with you.

what a fancy little french place! i took my friend here for his birthday. if you want a reasonable hour to go for dinner, book at least a week or two in advance. i used philippe's online booking system on their website. it even messages you prior to dinner just to double check.

as a whole this place is delightful. i felt slightly out of place, only because fancy isn't my forte. the waitstaff were polite, however spoke really softly. i did a bit of smiling and nodding.

our food was incredible. yum yum yum!! you can watch the chefs hard at work from the dining area and the restaurant is immaculate. i had the porterhouse and my friend had the chicken breast. i also had a cocktail which was delicious, however my glass had a lipstick stain still on the glass from a previous customer....damn that stay-proof lipstick. however when i flagged it with the waiter, it was quickly changed over with very little drama.

my friend recommended the dessert with the spéculoos in it. it wasn't my first choice, but i was trusting his judgement. it came out and i hoovered in true style. so delicious.

overall it was an amazing experience. definitely a great choice for a fancy dinner or date.

i created a zomato account just so i could post this review as ever since finishing dinner at philippe last night to say i was disappointed would be an understatement.

i had been keen to get to philippe since it opened not long ago so much so i decided to book a table for my birthday dinner, the 7 of us sat in the private dining room.

from the get go it was lacklustre to say the least the ambience was dull, intense bright lighting..kanye west playing in the background..it just didn't have the elegance and charm of other institutions like france-soir or bistro thierry.

our first round of beers ended up on for table/floor although an accident and not the gentlemans fault it just added to a very average dining experience.

the service was painfully slow even though the restaurant was half full, we were constantly having to top up our own glasses.

the food was average..the steaks for the price we paid and the lengthy time it they took to arrive at the table were overdone and basically cold. with little sauce, a tasteless purée and polenta chips which looked rather unsightly and didn't taste that much better.

it's a shame to have to write this negative review as we were all very excited to come and dine at philippe..the odd slip up and a wait for food wouldn't bother me or most people generally but for the price you pay you expect a level of service/food but it definitely did not reach expectations, not even close.

although africa was lovely to deal with over the phone.
