one word. cockcroach. that ruined our meal.

the food was good, and the service excellent until the cockroach. we noticed it just after ordering dessert that a cockroach was sitting on a wall, close to the ceiling, but directly next to our table.

we told the waiter, who told the manager, who told the chef. the waiter who initially told us he didn't know what could be done before speaking to the manager, never bothered to come back to us. the manager didn't come over either. they didn't even bother to move us to another table even though there were empty tables.

so thanks for ignoring the cockroach sitting next to us. i only hope that you actually fixed the problem afterwards, and didn't just ignore it, like you did us.

first time dining here after a friend recommended me here for the lunch special. have been to france in my previous travels and i have got to say this was better than majority of the food i had in france! (i probably just didn’t know where i was going half the time haha)

for entree we got the :
- french onion soup
- heirloom carrots
- confit duck
they were all so goooood! can’t pick a favourite! the french onion was so good for this cold weather.

for main we got:
- porterhouse
- rotisserie chicken (their signature)
- chargrilled king salmon
i didn’t have the highest expectations when it came down the chicken cause how good could chicken get?? but it was superb! you get a cut of breast and thigh and the breast was not dry at all so flavoursome i can’t wait to go back!!!!

overall, it was an authentic experience and will be back soon!

visited for a relaxing lunch with friends. greeting on arrival was odd, i suspect that our booking was lost (despite being confirmed that day). decor was ok, bright and white, nothing wrong here, just no atmosphere. food was fine, thought overpriced for what we got. the oysters were fresh, the steaks were average quality and the fish was good though again, nothing spectacular. deserts were as expected, chocolate fondant was lovely. what me list was good and i found a well priced red that met the mark. service was a bit hit and miss. overall, a fine lunch but not anything that rush back for. better options in melbourne for the same money.

the food  and ambience at philippe's is beautiful, each morsel is savoured and prepared with care. we were a group of 10 and were put up in the private dining room. the entree's set the tone for the nights offerings, tasty and plentiful, oysters, snails, pates, plenty of bread, the chatucuarie boards. the mains were the duck, chicken, wagu, etc were fantastic, silence at the table as we were all tucking in, the only comments were how beautiful  each meal was ,washed down with plenty of wine. we all were full,, but still room for the tasty, moreish desserts. we love a fancy restaurant that does not leave you looking for maccas' or a pizza on the way home!! the waiter was attentive but not too intrusive and happy to recommend when asked, and the service was great and philippe himself popped in to make sure everything was ok!

on side alley off collins st, the blue & white coq does signal the way.
delicious food, classic french but with extra added punchy flavours.
beef tartare, $24, was amazing. roast duck was cooked beautifully ($120, as you have to order two serves). lamb was soft and everything on the plate added great flavours, $38.
service was so-so, often very slow, and a mistake on the bill was met with a lacklustre response.

it was mr burberry’s birthday and he wanted to try phillipe since he’s been hearing great things about it so onward we went for some french cuisine. phillipe is located on collins street tucked away and when you enter the restaurant, you’re greeted by friendly staff and the smell of rotissoired chicken (mmmmmmmmmmm!).

despite the restaurant being full and well into its second sitting by the time of our booking, the service was faultless, as were all of the dishes we tried. the quail and foie gras parfait was sensational as were the pastry prawns. we shared the duck as a main and this i would heartily recommend. i am not usually a huge duck fan but with such a ideal cut perfectly cooked i may be converted. thanks for a perfect evening, always so wonderful (and rare) leaving without a single thing to criticise :-)

i haven't had a lot of french food in my life so i can't really compare it with anything. however, my mum has been to phillipe multiple times and absolutely loves it! which is why she took my sister and i to try it out.

the interior of the restaurant is gorgeous. we were situated on a large table in front of the open kitchen. service was excellent! the waiters were very attentive and friendly throughout the whole evening. we were given complimentary bread and mustard butter for the table. the butter was amazing! i could have eaten the whole thing as it is but that probably wouldn't have been too good for me.

for entre we had escargots, pate and wagyu tartare. i would have preferred my snails in its shell but that's just me nitpicking. pate and wagyu was delicious and flavourful, no faults. for mains we shared a rump steak which was cooked beautifully medium rare with a bordelaise sauce, grilled lamb rack and swordfish. lamb was cooked to perfection. rockling was on the drier side and had a sour taste to it - probably from the nettle but i'm not 100% sure. i still ate it but i probably wouldn't order it again. for desserts we ordered a lemon vacherin and an oeuf à la neige. not going to lie, i had to do a quick google search before i ordered desserts because i had no idea what these were! (also didn't want to look silly asking the waiters ha!) the meringue was so light and fluffy, which complimented the tropical fruits. lemon vacherin looked amazing and but tasted a tad too sour (i just don't do well with sour tastes). we also got a complimentary chocolate fondant because they brought out the wrong dessert first and because i don't eat/like chocolate, my mum and sister devoured it themselves. overall it was an enjoyable experience. i think it's just missing a bit of a wow factor though.

very disappointing place. i was expecting a nice french restaurant experience and we had a pricey average australian dining. would not recommend. bistro thierry is way better.

an amazing restaurant with a beautiful interior. i loved the plant wall and the booth seating. the service was very efficient and professional yet also really friendly. the fish was delicious - so rich in typical french style. my partner enjoyed his chicken dish very much. we learned about the 1 oyster special and vowed to come back at the right time to have it ourselves. the cherry dessert was so good i tried to cook it myself and recreate it in my own home! an awesome dinner.

booked last minute for 9pm dinner on saturday and the restaurant was available. we decided to go with 3 course degustation menu which was $70 per person ( must be ordered by the entire table). the items seem to be identical to what you can order off the a la carte menu.
starter : beetroot cured salmon with a side of salad - was quite delicious - a good combination of flavor, salmon tasted like standard cured salmon- not as delicate as some house cured salmon i’ve had in other fine dining places.
main: rotisserie chicken breast with potato and some possible orange sauce. i never order chicken in fine dining places or like chicken breasts in general, but it was probably one of the most juicy chicken breast we both had. sizing was also generous. although chicken is chicken - i don’t think i would necessarily order it again.
dessert : tried both the meringue and the lemon dessert - both were of good standard but meringue with the passion fruit centre was a good ending to my meal.

i also ordered a elderflower lemonade which was an overpriced $12 lemonade with a sprinkle of elderflower syrup- minus some points for this as i really dislike restaurants that charge a gross premium for non alcohol drinkers.

that aside the potato gratin we ordered as extra side was standard - but the complimentary bread with mustard butter was out of this world.

overall rating is probably 3.75 and rounded to a 4 because restaurant had good atmosphere and attentive staff. we spent $162 aud for the two for above food and drink.

service great and attentive. bread and butter delicious, entrees delicious, mains generous size. havent tried many french restaurants so have nothing to compare it to. i just wish the snails were served in its shell. that wouldve given it a more authentic french experience.

thank you for a wonderful dining experience, came here for my partner's birthday. this place felt like a hidden gem. from the beginning til the end i can say that i had delicious meal after meal! the complimemtary baguette with mustard butter was amazing. beautiful decor with some personal touches, it was romantic and i felt like i was back in france. we had a french waiter who provider good customer service. prices were really good. i find many restaurants are over priced and serve small portions but this place is all about genorosity. i don't have a standout because we loved all the dishes. we started with spanner crab and sea water jelly oyster. both so fresh, so good! it was the first time i had eaten oyster like this and i thought it was a lovely surprise! we then had roasted bone marrow and the quail foie gras and brioche which were delicious. i had the chicken which lives up to its reputation and my partner ordered trotters which he demolished. we had fries as the sides and they were crunchy outside and fluffy inside (in hindsight we probably didn't need a side as we were about to burst). still, we decided on dessert which was oeufs a la neige - beautifully presented, perfectly balanced, a light dessert, not too sweet, not too tart and a perfect end to the meals!
