so decided to hangout in my own city. have seen this a few times decided to stop in for lunch. had the sharprio schnitzel which was a different spin of a chicken sandwich. fried but no grease so that took away the guilt. washed down with a mimosa.. prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere was great. reminded me of new york. stop in but they close at 2:30 on saturdays.

after a recommendation i went along and discovered this lovely traditional diner with its bustling crowd of happy eaters. i ordered the corned beef hash which turned out to be the best i have ever tasted, no exaggeration! proper corned beef that melts in the mouth. i'm going to be thinking about it all day and next time i'm in richmond i'm going straight there. sensational!

it is really not like a kosher style delli. although from richmond, we lived in ny for over 30 years. we loved visiting the great delis there, like carnegie. the sandwiches were large and the meat very delicious.
here is what was good: half done pickles. matza ball soup, except the ball was too large. here is what was really bad:
wife ordered chopped liver sandwich, i ordered hot pastrami and chicken liver sandwich. the chicken liver was made like a pate....very loose, and served like one little schmear on the bread. it didn't even taste like chicken liver.you didn't get this recipe from a jewish mother!!!! she complained and got maybe and 18th of an inch more!! my pastrami was way over cooked, with hard pieces included and sandwich was not "overstuffed" the taste was awful. !! i told waiter and asked him for a taste of the corned beef........same problem there....overcooked and tasteless!!!!
we live in williamsburg and were so happy with the prospect of having a good kosher style place to get a good sandwich.
sooooo, we were sooooooooo disappointed. we also have many friends in richmond and agree with our assessment!
we were soooo hoping !!! the closest place in the larger area for good almost new york food is 57 deli in virginia beach.
you guys should go there and get some ideas!!!!
write me back.... at: samtreger@cox.net we are really hoping.

disappointing. i've never written a review for any restaurant before, but i really wanted to like perly's and having worked in restaurants for a long time i feel like i would want this feedback if i were them... i went with my husband and 2 other couples on one of their recommendations. i had to call to see if perly's was open for dinner since there was conflicting info on the web (no biggie). the person i spoke with said, "yes!" and added that dinner was 'amazing' and we should definitely come in. my hopes were high! the half priced wine during happy hour was a terrific surprise and the new look of the place is really adorable. we ate both the beef and the broccoli knish as appetizers and although it seemed to take a while for them to come out, they were definitely worth the wait. our entrees also took a long time to come out even though the dining room was not busy. our friends who had been there before raved about the huge and delicious beef brisket and schnitzel dishes, so naturally we had to order them! my husband and one other friend got the brisket which was apparently not as big as before, but still a nice sized portion. unfortunately it had absolutely no taste. even a generous helping of salt added to it only brought it up to cafeteria pot roast status. as a german i was thrilled to even see schnitzel on a menu, but my excitement quickly faded when i tasted the overcooked, bland meat. again, even a ton of salt couldn’t resurrect the plate. the batter was clearly too dark and the meat was really dry-schnitzel should melt! the other meals our friends ordered were well received- the matzo ball soup, a burger with pastrami on top and a bagel were very good. unfortunately i can't speak for the salad my friend ordered because the server forgot to bring it. overall our experience was far from 'amazing.' the old perly's made a terrific sandwich but it seems like they haven't quite graduated to stellar dinner entrees. i won't say i'll never go back, but if i do i’ll stick with happy hour wine and appetizers.

don't believe them if they tell you it's kosher. we asked four times if the meat was kosher at this "jewish" deli and were reassured over and over again. there are degrees of how people keep kosher just like with vegetarianism. but meat is either kosher or it isn't. make sure your staff doesn't misrepresent the food because that isn't fair to your customers. we have since found out that it wasn't kosher - and my mom is going to be very upset when she finds out.

newly reopened, new owner, some changes. i'm so happy to report the newly-opened place is amazing. excellent value, huge portions, all delicious. we had, for dinner: house made celery soda, new year (a cocktail), cup of borscht (only $3, generous portion), potato latkes with sour cream and apricot jam (fantastic!), and homemade asparagus & fennel (only $3, wonderful). then i had shapiro schnitzel (a sandwich on challah) and he had the fish entree. i'm very happy my sandwich was too big to finish and i can eat the rest today (yummy spicy green sauce/chutney, and homemade cauliflower pickles...) -- as well as the sweet noodle kugel we got to go (dessert only $3). oh and the decor is lovely too. we were very pleased and we will definitely return soon.

a richmond classic - perfect for breakfast. if you look at the negative reviews, they are all for lunch. went here with my family over the summer- those who ordered breakfast loved it, the one who ordered lunch was not impressed. the pancakes & biscuits are life changing. hope it reopens soon!

first time and not the last.. had brunch here today for the first time. arrived around noon and were seated within 10 minutes. service was great. we ordered the western omelet and poached eggs, both with grits and biscuits and a side of the apples. with two mimosas, which were huge, check before tip was well under $40 before a well deserved tip. perly's is excellent.
