we finished up dallas restaurant week (month) at pappas bros. steakhouse – om had been there only once a few years ago, and nom had never been there.
om: pappas bros. is one of the higher rated steakhouses in the dfw area, so i was looking forward to the experience. even though we had 8:15pm reservations, we didn’t get seated until about 8:30pm, as the place was very busy. the interior of this restaurant may scream “class” from the moment you step inside, with a nice bar area, grand piano, gas lamps, dark wood – it really gives the impression that you are somewhere special. our waitress for the night was unlike any that we’ve had, with a very dry demeanor and sense of humor. i ordered the caesar salad, filet, and cheesecake, and we added on mac & cheese and onion rings to share. the bread that came out before the meal was nice and crispy, really enjoyed that. the caesar salad was very good with large pieces of cheese that added to the flavor. next was the filet/shrimp/green beans/mashed potatoes combo. piece of shrimp was fine, green beans and mashed potatoes were good as well. the filet…i mean, it was good, but i expected better…it was just a bit chewy in spots. i’ve had at least three better filet’s in the last month. the sides were good, mac and cheese some of the best that i’ve had at a steakhouse. ditto for the cheesecake, creamy and good and a big slice! pappas bros. was a nice experience, but i think i was expecting a bit more. after the run of about nine steakhouses in the last few months it ranks somewhere in the middle.
nom: i have to be honest, i didn’t know much about pappas bros steakhouse. but when i heard we were going to try it for restaurant week i was excited as it gets good reviews. when we arrived it was very busy and we waited to be seated for our 8:15 reservations. it has a beautiful exterior as well as dark rick interior, the bar area is huge and has a grand piano, upholstered columns and gas lamps. they also proudly display the different types of steak cuts they offer on the menu. our waitress was divine. such a welcome dry sense of humor and very frank. what a nice change of pace that actually had me laughing at times. i ordered the house salad with ranch dressing and the ranch was very fresh tasting. the bread was piping hot and very crispy and it offered with regular butter. next i had the strip steak and it was very tender for a ny strip and well-seasoned! i have to admit i didn’t eat much of the mashed potatoes or green beans as we had mac n chees and onion rings with our meal. the onion rings were good, not great, but good. the mac n cheese was very very good! some of the best from our restaurant week travels! and to top it off i had the key lime pie which was nice and tart, maybe a bit too tart, but the crust was delicious! it was a lovely experience but maybe it was too busy for me or something because it fell just short of my expectation.
