biting into the thin non-oily tortilla chips dipped in the slightly spicy salsa was the first hint there’d be good food to come. mexican cuisine is a meal i always look forward to in america. where choices are abundant and things just taste more authentic compared to canada.

oyamel cocina mexicana didn’t disappoint. their tacos were each four delicious bites. the palm sized shell could barely contain the lengua guisada ($4.50), to the point i had to finish the second half with knife and fork as the thick slices of tender beef tongue fell out. braised until permeated with flavours, this is the way tongue is meant to be served: bites of the soft meaty properties while the unsightly bumps are hidden from view.

the pollo a la parrilla ($4) had lovely smokiness with the chicken even the green onion garnishes getting some time on the grill. if you order multiple tacos, eat this one first as the flavours are mellow. the smear of smashed heirloom resboseros beans at the bottom were

on october 31, 2017, while many of you were either out trick-or-treating or offering up candy to eager trick-or-treaters, i was lucky enough to go to oyamel’s annual day of the dead dinner. the dinner commemorates the famous mexican holiday, where families remember the deceased. while it may sound depressing the holiday is actually quite festive. those who celebrate make the favorite foods of the departed, and tell humorous stories about loved ones who have passed.

high end mexican food by famed chef jose andres. good, geniune fare with small plates to share. great drinks. food is very good but not as amazing as offered in other andres restaurants. service was spotty with a slow waiter a dish mixup. definitely worth a visit if you want genuine mexican food. if you’re feeling brave try the cricket taco, a rare mexican delicacy

this place was very good. the service was great too. the food was very tasty as well as the presentation. it is on the pricey side but it is worth it. i was there with my wife and sons and part of the time there was spent discussing on the quality of the food. i would go again.

creative and delicious. a friend and i came for lunch during restaurant week. oyamel is well designed and has a good ambience, but is a bit noisy. the service is prompt and efficient. the restaurant week menu offered the choice of two antojitos, a taco, and dessert. antojito one was sopa tarasca estilo pátzcuaro, a black bean soup with avocado leaves, light mexican cream, and aged cotija cheese, with a side of crispy ancho chile, avocado and fried tortilla strips. delicious, deep flavors that worked well with one another. antojito two was col de bruselas estilo san quintín, crispy brussels sprouts with a chile de árbol sauce, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, peanuts, and lime. bright flavors with crisp textures and crunch. my taco was tinga poblana con puerco, a well made corn tortilla filled with stewed, shredded pork with chorizo, chipotle, lettuce, and guacamole. perfection in a tortilla. finally, for dessert, flan de cajeta with piloncillo compressed apples, caramel ice cream, and goat’s milk caramel sauce. i can't wait to return!

very nice ambiance, lively environment. no parking of course. fast service, a bit pricey. leas option for chicken lovers :). found it a bit hard to order from the menu as a first timer there. ordered few drinks, would give them average rating as there was nothing extremely special about them.

this is very good mexican food. if you are the type that typically orders the combo platter at mexican restaurants than this may not be the place for you. this is a small plates type of place. food is very good and the tequila selection is top notch!

one of the more authentic mexican restaurants. they make guacamole right in front of you. their chips are one of the best. they are freshly made corn chips.

this was a fun, tasty meal. the star of the evening to me was the salted foam margarita. that's right. salt in the foam. it was life changing. the pozole verde and ceviche was particularly fantastic. the table side guacamole was very good as well. this is not a cheap night out, but still very good.

tip: a great review covers food, service, and ambiance. got recommendations for your favorite dishes and drinks, or something everyone should try here? include that too! and remember, your review needs to be at least 140 characters long :)

oyamel is one of restauranteur and chef josé andrés’ creations. just as the restaurant is full of fun, eclectic decorations, the menu has interesting, unique options from cactus salad to grasshopper tacos. i decided to be adventurous so i tried the latter. it was a mistake, but more about that later. my experience at oyamel made me realize that i do not like the small plate fad or eating insects.

i stopped in for a quick bite around 5:00pm and decided on the cheesy, chicken enchilada with the sparkling limonade. it was just the right amount of food for the time of the day. the complimentary chips and salsa are served warm and crunchy. thumbs up on the limonade.

i was seated right away, and noticing a notation on my reservation, the hostess gave me an allergen menu before i even had a chance to ask for it myself. once i let my waitress know that i was gluten and dairy-free, she immediately let me know that the complementary chips were off limits for me, as they are fried in a shared fryer. when i decided what i was going to order, she assured me that she would let the kitchen know so that they could take extra precautions to ensure my meal's safety.
