the white house of flavortown. myself and two co-workers, all expressed foodies, decided to try this hip looking new joint near our office in west ashley. we thought the menu looked decent and inventive and figured if the menu was so simple then the food would must be decent. i don't think there is anyway i could have prepared myself for this place...
from the moment we walked in we received a warm greeting and were seated quickly and before we had a chance to soak up the hip, eclectic atmosphere we were greeted by our server, casey (hope i spelled it right), and this young woman was awesome. she was friendly, courteous, she fed on our excitement and mood and her service only got better as the meal went on. i don't think we even had a chance to want something before it was presented. she was also very knowledgeable about the menu and offered us great insight as to what was delicious. just from her descriptions and the menu we were excited to the point of giddiness for our food. then it happened....
the first appetizers came out and bite by bite our mind began to be blown. we had a plate of the jalapeno cheddar cracklins, which were the most amazing fried pork pieces i ever put in my mouth. they were the size of softballs, as light and airy as a cloud, and rich in flavor. the bowl full was about 8-9 inches tall. then we had our first taste of the beef-fat fries and our outlook on fries in this world was changed forever, simply amazing! the mayo that came to dip them in was made in-house and super silky and delicious, and then the next flavor explosion surprise happened.... we decided to squirt some ketchup on our plates... oh big deal, ketchup... it was a big deal! the flavor of the homemade ketchup practically knocked me out of my seat it was so creative and delectable. we were all so taken away at this point we were practically shaking in our seats waiting for our meals to come out.
i ordered the fried chicken biscuit, with egg, cheddar cheese, slab bacon, house-made pickles and basil. from top to bottom it was flavor explosions, the crispy unique crust to the chicken, tender juicy chicken inside, sharp cheddar, thick salty bacon slab, the egg popped and covered the whole thing in gooey awesomeness. then i had the beef-fat fries as my side, perfectly crispy, exponential flavor, and the food euphoria kept getting higher. one of the co-workers had a half slab of what he described as the best ribs he ever ate with the brussel sprouts... not your mom's brussel sprouts, we all tried them and they were the most well-cooked flavorfull sprouts we ever had, all of us agreed. then my other co-worked had the double burger loaded with everything... not just any burger, a blend of brisket and sirloin that was so flavorful it would have been great with no toppings or condiments, oh but it did have other toppings and condiments and every single aspect knocks your socks off.... more beef-fat fries!
not to mention during this entire time our server, casey, constantly refilled our drinks and catered to us with smiling service that showed she was enjoying our table as much as we were enjoying the meal. i don't know if she told the manager how much we were enjoying our experience or if he could just see by the expressions and noise coming from the three grown men now turned giddy children from their food, but the manager came over to inquire about our experience. at which point we raved and expressed that every bit of it was knock your socks off jump up on a couch and scream amazing.
our plates were cleared, we sat in flavortown bliss, then the manager walks up and asks if we're ready for dessert... we were soooo full and happy that we couldn't imagine the experience getting better, then he says that the chef would like to offer us complimentary dessert because he was so happy that we enjoyed their food so much. what!?! seriously in what restaurant does that happen at lunch on a wednesday? of course we took them up on that offer.... two orders of carrot cake and one of peanut-butter banana pie later. and those desserts were like perfectly portioned gifts from the food gods that sent us into food euphoria overdrive. i can't speak for my co-workers, but the carrot cake looked insane and they raved about it and the homemade ice-cream that came with it. as for the peanut-butter banana pie i had.... it was no pie, no mere slice of pie... it was a circular, fluffy, airy, light as wind torte of perfectly balanced flavors with bananas on top that were flambeed crusty with sweetness, a smear of perfectly salted peanutty caramel type sauce and freshmade whipped cream (more like whipped awesomeness)....
we demanded the chef come out.... enter chef jordan, humble, somewhat shy, but he finally came out, and you could tell from meeting him that this food is his passion and himself and his people put pure love into this food. we were so happy to have enjoyed his food that i could have hugged him. although that might have been weird so we settled for a handshake and let him know that this meal made our day and would probably overshadow the pending thanksgiving the next day.
we are all already planning on what we will get next time.... this place is crazy, amazing, awesome good, and if you don't like it then you don't know food. all naysayers should be shot on sight or taken out back and beaten until they can appreciate the food these people are putting out. simply amazing and i can't wait to return. if you haven't been here you're missing out on one of the freshest, most delicious breath's of air to hit the charleston restaurant scene in quite some time. at that i bid you good day.
