always an impressive evening. i've been to monterey bay for dates, for family dinners, and to entertain out-of-towners. it has, without fail, always been an enjoyable and rewarding experience. i've never had to wait very long past my reservation time, although i like their bar/lounge area so much that i never mind the wait. it's a truly top-shelf bar with tables lining the windows, showing off the tremendous view of the city. (as with any restaurant on grandview, you're partially paying for the view...so try to get a window table in the dining room...request it in your reservation)
once called to my table, my service has always been impeccable. the wait-staff is well-trained, knowledgable, and eager to please (why would anyone at a place with such high tip-potential not be?) there's always someone roaming the floor with water, so your glass will rarely be empty.
their fish is flown in fresh daily, so their menu changes accordingly. if a fish isn't available that day, it will be marked with an n/a. (my question: if it isn't available, why print it on the menu? this place should be above padding its menu. i'd rather not be shown an option than see a fish i want, then notice it's n/a.) the crab cakes live up to the hype...almost no filler. try them as an appetizer at least. they come as part of the appetizer trio, a "special" that has been offered every time i've gone for the last 10 years. someone along the way must have decided it sells better if offered as a "special" as opposed to just putting it on the menu. you should probably get two orders of the trio if your party is bigger than 2 or 3 people.
my most recent visit was about 3 weeks ago and i ordered the halibut with an orange-basil preparation. it proved to be one of the best fish dishes i've had...period. the halibut was cooked to perfection, and the orange glaze/sauce...well, it has my mouth watering as i remember it. however, the little mound of what appeared to be canned tangerine wedges was odd and pointless, other than to take up space on the plate.
the other eight diners in my party were all very pleased with their entrees. much sharing was done, and i liked everything i tasted.
if i'm going to be let down by a course at a high-endseafoodrestaurant, i expect it to be dessert. this was not the case here. my carrot cake with caramel drizzle (presented as 4 ladyfinger-like strips stacked tic-tac-toe style) was a huge surprise. i forced my family to sample it...not because i'm a giving person, but because i couldn't get over how good it was! i had to get outside confirmation.
when this place it on, it's really on. we aren't a terribly easy group to impress, but this meal did it...start to finish.
if you want to show off or admire pittsburgh and have a great dining experience, a night at monterey bay has to be at the top of your list.
