mofongo is the national dish of puerto rico. basically, it’s a shell of fried plantains. you can think of them as bananas, even though they’re really not, mashed into a cup. that “cup” is then filled with chicken, beef or shrimp (your choice), and then the cup is turned upside down and covered in sofrito, which is a savory, spicy, traditional puerto rican base of tomatoes, onions and herbs. you can think of it as salsa, even though, you know…it’s not.

the servers at mofongos were super welcoming to us. they were eager to explain about all the different dishes on the menu and offer suggestions since this was our first endeavor into puerto rican cuisine. a flow of people were constantly coming in and out as we dined and we noticed that many people who had dined in, also left with several containers of take out. our server told us it was common for patrons to take home dishes home since most of them drive from all over because there are only three puerto rican restaurants in all of la and orange counties. mofongos has the reputation of being the best and while we haven’t tried the other two, we loved our lunch and upon leaving, were eager to attempt a recreation at home. if you live in north hollywood, mofongos also offers delivery. for the rest of us, our options are to smash some plantains at home or venture to the north side when the craving for puerto rican food strikes.

new waitress super kind- jasmine... had the res alcapuria... great... also had the shrimp mofungo- very good. tasted the pastel de res, but it was so-so... not like my grandma's. i will come back for the mofungo & alcapuria , & might try other dishes . overall this place did not disappoint even though it is a small neighborhood eatery

it's ok. if they can bring down the salt content in their food, i would say it would be quite an improvement. i'm not trying to knock it. the food is pretty good. but the amount of salt is stoping me from going back. and i like salt, but when everything is a bit high there's no balance. all you are going to taste is salt. the herbs and spices dissapear. look i'm just trying to be helpful. to thechef bring down the salt. if i want more salt i will add the salt my self. nothing drastic 25 percent less salt.

ever since i read about mofongos, la's only puerto rican restaurant from the rants and crave blog , i've been wanting to try their food, especially the mofongo dish the restaurant is named for. so i gathered a group of curious diners from my dining group

comida sana!. we tried the mofongo the dish was good moist and seasoned to perfection! the pernil was succulent!
but the venue is tiny, so if you wish to get a seat, make a reservation! on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best it gets an 8!
this is the only game in town right now for puerto rican food!

bad food. we just came back from eating at mofongos. what i had i did not like the mofongos no taste. the pork chops to dry. the rice was good not that great. and i am the one that goes to new restaurant and than tell the family about it sorry not this one. the place to small. we always go in a group of about 6 to 10 or more. no parking had to park down the street. i know you will delete this review that o.k
mouth to mouth is best for a review.

u really enjoyed the food and te service was just as good. i ordered ad the fish with tomatoe and onion sauce and it was great! the prices were very reasonable (most plates were under 10 bucks) and you get plenty of food, which is good is you have a appetite. the restaurant itself is pretty small but is has a nice feeling to it. i highly recommend it!
