if you happen to be in the niagara region and want to stay away from the tourist joints as well as the chain restaurants, italian-american should be your best local bet and michael's will have what you might want to enjoy.
this is a mom and pop place that has been around since '60 and is located right at the limit of little italy.  you will find everything from pasta, to sandwiches, to american meal favorites, to pizzas.  tomato sauce is everywhere it seems.
thebeansand greens soup is popular but we had some italian wedding soup which was on the special's list.
if you are in the mood for something different and a specialty of the house, you might want to try what i had: the calzone.  this was the biggest one i ever had and you might struggle to finish as i did.  it came in pipping hot.  in fact all portions here are huge.
the calzone is essentially a pizza dough wrapping some ricotta and mozzarella before finally being quickly deep friend for the exterior.  you can add extra ingredients as an extra charge and i selected the meatballs to seal the deal.
you might not have a good representation of the full flavors of real italian food but sometimes all you want is basic and fast american comfort food.
lots of locals come here and the service is very friendly and helpful.

italian "southern" soup. ordered a cup of thebeansand greens soup made of spinach, collard greens, and white beans. it was awesome! didn't know italians know how to do it southern style. :) could have used some cornbread to go with it. did get a basket of crackers and so-so bread. was hoping for more garlic but thoroughly enjoyed the lasagna with red meat sauce. great place to stop while in little italy on pine avenue near niagara falls, ny.

one of the best sauces outside of mom's kitchen. although a 15 year resident of niagara falls i had never been here but finally got my chance when my father requested it for his fathers day dinner this year. wow! we were seated quickly and had a super friendly and very attentive waitress. hving worked in the restaurant industry in various positions i was actually shocked at how genuinely friendly she was, it gave the place a very home like feel.
i ordered the ziti and brocolli special with soup and it was huge and delicious. i was a bit aprehensive to get a meal with a butter and garlic sauce with it, but it was excellent. the brocolli was blanched just right and the simple sauce was delicious. my fathered ordered spaghetti with sauce and sausage, which he let me dip my bread in (he's a good dad like that) and i loved their sauce as well. i chosebeansand greens soup with my meal and it was fantastic. i had never had this style soup served this thick so it was a very pleasant surprise. the meal was so good we packed it to go even though were we on our way to a bike ride to the falls! half sized portions are available and the menu is quite large so i'll definately be coming for dinner with dad here again and again and again! one of the best home made sauces i've had outside my mothers kitchen!

good soups and desserts. stopping at michael's can be a bit confusing; where do you park? where do you enter?

once you figure that out, the menu poses another challenge. they use traditional italian-american vocabulary (all pasta is called macaroni, for example), and it took me and my family several minutes and a few questions to the waitress to figure out how to interpret the lunch menu properly.

though we were all underwhelmed by our entrees, i would go to michael's again for the soups and dessert. we tried all three soups of the day and they were all excellent, especially the uniquebeansand greens.

the chocolate chip cannoli was legitimately the best cannoli i've had anywhere - ever! it was excellent!

i didn't particularly enjoy my pasta, and the italian sausage was actually pretty terrible, but the cannoli made up for it. while i think the lunch was overpriced, the cannoli price was reasonable (4 something) - at least i thought so after i tasted it!

standard american italian fare done very well. well it's september and that means back to school. as long as our children have been attending school, tradition has had us travelling to niagara falls, new york from our home in canada in search of great deals. the kids can look great and it doesn't break our bank at the same time. of course the other great aspect of travelling stateside is the food. we opened the urbanspoon app on my blackberry and started spinning. we had our minds set on italian in niagara falls so we locked the city and cuisine type and started spinning. michael's was one of the first to pop up. we liked the idea of 88% and 62 reviews. after spinning a few more times, we decided to try michael's. when we arrived, it is clear that this is ulitmately an italian diner. the sign at the door directed us to seat ourselves, even though the restaurant was fairly busy. our server came over immediately, took a drink order and informed us of numerous specials listed on the whiteboard in the corner. we looked at the menu that had breakfast, italian foods and american foods listed on it. the wine and beer selections were simple and straight to the point. i then wandered over to the special's menu where i sawbeansand greens, fried calamari and stuffed banana peppers. these three items are some of our favourite foods to eat when they are available. when our server returned, we ordered the fried calamari, the banana peppers stuffed with asiago, ricotta and prosciutto as appetizers. we also ordered the small size ravioli with meatballs and gnocchi with meat sauce and another order of meatballs.

the peppers were very good. the ricotta tasted fresh, the asiago added some sharpness and the bits of prosciutto added a nice saltiness. the peppers themselves were slightly spicy and cooked just enough to keep them firm and al dente.

the calamari, was delicious. it was cooked perfectly, not chewy, the coating was crisp and not oily. the inside melted and didn't have any rubbery texture to it. the calamari was served with marinara sauce and honey mustard dip. the marinara was my choice between the two.

with our mains, i hadbeansand greens instead of salad. any time i am in a restaurant that servesbeansand greens, i order it. thesebeansand greens were delicious. served piping hot the way soup should be, the greens had a great fresh flavour with good bitterness, the stock was appropriately salty and thebeanswere mild with a hint of sweetness. i would return for just a bowl of this.

our server was right on top of things. she noticed that our apps and our salad and soup came fairly quickly, so she informed us that she had told the kitchen to slow our meal down so that we can enjoy our meal. this was said to us even as the restaurant continued to get busier and busier at 2:30 in the afternoon. my wife pointed out that at least a half dozen people came in as well for takeout.

our mains arrived. the meat sauce was a very good italian american sauce. it had good acidity with a balanced amount of sweetness and loads of ground meat. it went well with the gnocchi. my meatballs, although misshapen, were moist, and cooked perfectly. they had a little more parsley than i prefer, but still very good. my wife's ravioli was served with marinara sauce, large and stuffed full of creamy cheese. overall, the meal was very good. i am not saying excellent, but very good. we informed our server it was our first time there. she said she hoped it wouldn't be our last time. after a quick glance across the table to see the smile on my wife's face, we were both confident in telling our waitress that we would definitely be back.
