i was sadly disappointed. i popped in for take-out, and ordered two chicken pupusas and the yuca frita.
the positives: friendly service! i the server was very warm and welcoming, and it didn't take long to prepare. the pupusas were delicious: soft, tasty, and when hit with a touch of hot sauce, they're an extra tasty part of the meal.
the negative: yuca frita. in many ways, the yuca frita is sort of a central american take on a poutine; there are cassava "fries" which are covered in a rich sauce, chunks of pork, and a crispy salad. in theory (and certainly in the photo), it should be a delicious feast. what i got was not good. the best way i can describe it was that it felt like it was made three days ago, left to dry on a counter, and reheated for my lunch. the pork bites were dry, rock-hard chunks that were essentially jerky. i was given a plastic fork because it was a take-out order. the fork broke on the second pork bite. the cassava pieces were soft and delicious if they were fortunate enough to come in contact with the sauce, but there wasn't enough sauce to lather the cassava, so much of it was dry, chewy, and felt overcooked. again, it felt like it was made days ago and hit with fresh sauce. i'm not saying it was, but that's how i describe the presentation and texture. it certainly wasn't worth 14$. i saw the flavour potential, but it was a dry, difficult lunch.
i've read quite a few positive reviews here, so maybe it was just an off day for the chef. the pupusas were good, but i'm on the fence about a second visit.
