another reason to go downtown. we have eaten at fruition many times and love the locally sourced food. mercantile was no different. we had a wonderful pinot noir which complimented our meals ( scallops/duck) perfectly.
union station is worth a visit even if you don't eat here.

i have to be honest, i was hesitant about mercantile dining & provision when it first opened in union station. sure, it comes from james beard semi-finalist chef alex seidel (of fruition restaurant and fruition farms), but i wasn’t really ready to pay mercantile’s prices for dinner... but i finally tried it. and i have to admit: yes, it’s expensive, but it’s also totally worth it for a special occasion. it’s a beautiful restaurant with impeccable service, fantastic wine, and spectacular food.
if you’re a fan of octopus, this is definitely one of the better octopus dishes you will find anywhere: spanish octopus à la plancha, fingerling potato bravas, garlic aïoli, saffron tomato broth ($26). personally, i recommend going with the “family dinners” (served with confit fingerling potatoes, roasted cauliflower, arugula & fennel salad). this is the whole branzino à la plancha, with leeks, fresh thyme & oregano, and lemon ($60, but it easily serves 2 people).  and then there’s the bone-in creek stone ribeye (36oz), with truffled sea salt, roasted garlic gastrique, and a veal reduction ($98, but serves 3-4 people). if you like steak, you can’t go wrong with this. i’m almost embarrassed to admit that i was gnawing on that bone by the end of my meal.

stay in school. mercantile dining and provisions, located in the soon to become iconic union station, is an outpost of alex seidel, the proprietor of fruition, perhaps denver's best restaurant. mercantile follows seidel's passion for "farm to table," that obnoxious and overused term for fresh produce. most good restaurants will use the freshest and best products available. with transport as good as it is today, that might include produce from a farm in timbuktu that can arrive to a kitchen in colorado in less then a day. so stop this "farm to table" obsession already and worry more about how food tastes and the graciousness of your staff. the food at mercantile dining & provisions, (is the name pretentious enough for you?) is served cafeteria style, kind of. you place your order at the cash register, pay for it, and someone texts you when it's ready. then, you stroll over to the kitchen's counter and pick it up. my mind raced back to my middle school lunch room, and i almost expected someone to butt in line. i didn't enjoy this kind of service back then, and i don't like it now. union station is not an airport, and most people are not in a hurry to catch a train. i don't like airport tray eating either for that matter. dining is suppose to be relaxing, a time for peace and pleasant conversation. isn't our culture rushed enough? on one hand we are urged to consume healthy, locally raised and farmed food. yet, on the other hand, mercantile is encouraging us to shove that food down our gullet as fast as possible. i have a disconnect here.......
the food is good, not great or memorable. all the spaces at union station are pleasant enough, and the decor is appropriate. service is nicer, younger and better looking then my former middle school cafeteria matrons and i didn't hear that atavistic cafeteria growl. mercantile dining & provisions (that name again!) is okay, but nothing to transfer about.

was so excited to try mercantile for the first time after hearing great reviews online and from friends about the restaurant and had one of the worst “dining” experiences ever. not only were we seated 45 minutes after our reservation time, we also never received our main courses after sitting in the restaurant for two hours. the few small plates we did receive were undercooked. our party ended up ordering the check (mostly for the drinks we ordered) and walked out of the restaurant. do not plan on going back.

plus - first class cooking, especially an amazing chicken sweet corn broth for the ravioli
minus - slightly snooty service for this older lone diner from out of town
- over salty seafood bisque with the halibut ‘cheeks’ but ....
- there was only one ... yes i know american portions are undesirably oversized but this is too far the other way - one halibut cheek! ditto one slice of toast with salmon for my breakfast and a very small portion of sheep cheese for the cheese course ... not generous, especially at these prices

making dinner reservations was never really my thing when i lived in new york city. the idea of trying to figure out what i would feel like eating several days in advance seemed pretty unreasonable.  what if thought i wanted vegan comfort food next friday, but when that day came around, i actually felt like eating soup dumplings in chinatown?!?! surely i would die.

impressed by fruition, alex seidel’s inspired modern american cooking and adherence to concepts of sustainability not only delicious and inspired, but immensely respectable as well, mercantile dining & provisions was nothing short of requisite for a late-morning snack during the last day in denver, my only regret being sold out bread pudding and the fact that i did not visit sooner as i’d have liked to return for lunch or dinner, too.

located in the dining concourse at union station, the still-functional downtown transportation landmark in the process of completing recent renovations and featuring some of the biggest restaurant openings of the last couple years, mercantile dining & provisions is one part market and another part eatery, all three meals featuring their own distinct menus while a grab n’ go counter proves ideal for folks on their lunch hour, or even those in a hurry to catch a train.

a gorgeous space in the early morning, floor to ceiling windows bathing both dining room and kitchen in the sun’s brilliant rays, those arriving before 11am are encouraged to peruse the pastry counter before taking a look at a small but well-culled menu, the options later expanding to encompass everything from soups and salads to housemade pastas and plates more substantial, 5pm service even including “family style” dinners with offerings subject to the chef’s whim and daily market change.

listing nearly everything by source, several items coming from seidel’s own fruition farms, it was while watching the open kitchen that i stood patiently waiting in a short line where coffee and baked goods are offered, the eventual order consisting of just four items, though looking back on the day’s later meals i only wish that i’d have bought more.

no doubt infusing americana with european concepts throughout much of mercantile’s layout, as well as the bill of fare, breakfast began with still-warm monkey bread awash in caramel and butter before moving to a savory riff on the traditional cinnamon roll, this one topped bacon shavings atop thick frosting and the tightly curled brioche bun.

no doubt executing the aforementioned well, but even better when turning eyes towards modernized classics from france, both the pain au raisin and almond croissant were riddled with nuts and butter amidst arching layers of crisp lamination, the former mellowing yellow raisins with pistachios while the later is not only bigger than most, but also far better with a shell guaranteed to make a mess of any surface while the inside is stuffed with pureed almonds instead of cloying frangipane.

we also opted for the creamed kale agnolotti with white beans, roasted pepper, and preserved tomato. this was a type of kale stuffed ravioli with a really delicate, slightly spicy red sauce. we were surprised how much we liked this meal. kale is an acquired taste, but all the flavors meshed so wonderfully in this dish that we actually didn't notice the tough, bitter taste of the kale. good job, mercantile! you surprised us.
the maple leaf farms duck breast was a pan seared breast served with confit root vegetable cassoulet, duck leg sausage, crispy lentil vinaigrette, and cracklin' bread crumbs. it was a good presentation and had a great flavor.

what a great addition to downtown. this was our second drop-by since the place opened. we ate at the bar both times, watching the place buzz with activity. great beer and wine/drink list. deep and well curated.
cool, meats, nice cheeses. good place for a snack or a meal. winner.

i have an assignment to write a feature about denver’s fabulous union station, and while i attended some of the opening festivities last july, have eaten in all of its restaurants and pass though every time i ride the bus to denver and back home, i couldn’t very well write it without meeting with the extraordinary dana crawford, preservationist extraordinaire who spearheaded the preservation of the historic terminal and was instrumental in redeveloping it into the lively dining, shopping, socializing and transit hub it is now.

i was hoping to sit in the lounge and order a lite salad for dinner but there are rules as to what you can order in certain seating areas. i didn't love that. i ended up ordering a charcuterie plate and a glass of wine in the lounge and loved that! the menu looks delicious so i'll definitely be back to try other food items. great patio with cool couches. perfect for a mellow denver night!
