poor service.... bring cash!. while the juicy lucy at matt'sbarwas most definitely delicious, it lacked enough cheese!!! the french fries are amazing (perfectly crispy and sliced thin). overall, matt'sbarisn't my favorite burger joint, but it's just average. the service is poor (there are typically mistakes with an order), but the servers "are" friendly and the timing is quick! also, "be sure to bring cash or check." you'd think that matt'sbarwould join the 21st century but it seems they lack the motivation to make customers' experience convenient.

after a disappointing juicy lucy experience at the 5-8, my girlfriend and i made our way to matt'sbarwith high hopes. we sat down at thebarwith no wait, the gentleman behind thebarwas prompt and helpful, explaining that we can order the jucy lucy with or without onion and pickles (which we did). we watched the tail end of the twins game while waiting around 15 to 20 minutes for the burger. one bite into the matt's jucy lucy and we both knew this burger was far better than 5-8 based off of taste alone. the meat was tastier and the cheese was delicious and hot. $2.00 beers and a $5.15 jucy lucy beat the 5-8 less than satisfactory $5.50 juicy lucy, long wait and neglectful wait service.

the juicy lucy is your friend.. never mind that the cheese is scalding your chin while it oozes out of your mouth. this place is a real old school burger joint that leaves you smelling like a burger the rest of the night. the coolest part about it.... the cheese injected into the center of the burger. this is quite an incredible way to experience a burger. we recommend you make it to matt'sbaras soon as you can.

jonestown watering hole. let's just be clear about the jucy lucy. i like it just fine. it's comprised of 2 salty thin burgers with cheese melted in the middle. a fine idea and probably the best way to melt cheese on a burger. however i don't think it's going to garner matt'sbara nobel prize or a macarthur fellowship anytime soon. if you think this is the best burger in the world, then you must have also ordered the kool-aid.

if you want a fancy meal in a quiet, intimate setting, this place is not for you. if you want a no frills meal that is cheap, you've come to the right place. the place is crowded, so expect to wait. if you order the jucy lucy (yes, that is how they spell it), the wait will be worth it. this place claims to be the creator of the jucy (juicy) lucy, and it's so damn good, i'm not going to argue. a word of warning: when they tell you to take small bites, you best heed that advice. the cheese in the center is extremely hot, it will squirt onto your fingers, and it will hurt. but, it will not take away from the awesomeness that is a matt'sbarjucy lucy.

while many new restaurants seem to believe mixing the most audacious combination of colors or gluttonous ingredients together on instagram is the key to success there are certain spots who’ve been dabbling in the world of #yolkporn and #cheesepulls for decades, perhaps first and foremost amongst them matt’sbarwhere the “jucy lucy” has been tempting minnesotans since 1954.

originally opened in 1950 but only becoming a local landmark after its purchase by matt bristol, a local man with previous restaurant experience who decided he’d rather own a bar, matt’sbaroccupies an unassuming space at 3500 cedar avenue south yet from 11am until midnight or later each day one can rest assured there will likely be a wait.

probably best termed a “dive bar” in the most praiseful way possible, an obituary to the late-owner found amidst shirts and photos on the wall, it was only five minutes after servers unlocked doors on sunday that a booth was occupied in the back-right corner, only one other group of six already present as nfl pre-game played prominently on televisions at the bar.

prominently displaying “cash only” signs around the brief menu of burgers, fries, grilled cheese and chicken, though all anyone seemed to be ordering was the first two plus beer, it was investing $7.50 plus tax and tip that one of the misspelled classics was requested, the forty-five minute wait admittedly unexpected and spent watching the room fill as tunes from journey and johnny cash filled the air.

perplexed by the delay but with no place else to be on the last day of vacation it was finally without explanation or excuse that the jucy lucy arrived wrapped in paper, the bun no better than one might find at their locally grocery store while beef was slightly charred and not particularly noteworthy save for the cheese core that appears to be cheddar tinged pink with blood.

matt’sbaris a little hole in the wallbarwith good burgers including some of the best juicy lucy’s in the area. it gets very busy - we came at 4:30 pm and by 5:15 pm there were a ton of people waiting.

i'd say "worst service", but there was no service, so "what service?!". my 10-year-old daughter and i walked in at 4:40, excited to have just beaten the dinner rush. neither of us had been to matt's before, and were excited to try it. the "server" shouted over thebaras we stood by the "wait to be seated" sign, "how many?" "two", i said. the room, which might seat 50 people if the fire marshall is on vacation, was about 1/2 full. "just find a clean table or booth" she said. perplexed as to why we needed to wait for that sage advice, we sat down at the nearest table in the center of the tiny room. for the next 20 minutes, we sat and watched as this woman seated new arrivals until the room was full, and took orders from every other table (even those that arrived after us). in the second half of that 20 minutes, i tried unsuccessfully to get her attention. finally we walked out in disgust. i can't tell you what the food is like. that's likely just as well. we won't be going back to find out.

rude staff. i just left matt's after standing by the please wait to be seated sign for 15min. we approached the waitress and asked if we could have the table which just came available and she rudely turned her back and said you can't have that 6 top. she then proceeded to walk away as we tried to ask how long is the wait and where should we sit. she then said just sit at thebarif you want to be served there are 3 seats right there in front of you with the nastiest tone i walked out before i returned her nasty attitude. never going to matts again i used to come in for togo all the time when i lived here i will save my money and go else where when in town.

now this is a juicy lucy and a fun experience. i have heard about this place for years and finally experienced it on a beautiful saturday in september. the area is a bit sketchy to me, but in the sunlight hours i was fine. parking on the street less than a block from the front door. when we arrived the line was long, but as we come to find out, the line was rather short. during our 70 minutes here the line never died down and in fact kept growing. when we exited it was wrapping around the side of the building. one college aged man said, "why don't we just go to mcdonalds!". the answer is obvious, this place is an experience. but i think he makes a good point, you do not want to be hungry when you get to matts. you want to be starting to get hungry. the line to be seated was twenty minutes. there are booths and tables and stools at the bar. we ended up at the bar. thebarstools were very comfortable. we were immediately greeted by a friendly bartender who pour a glass of grainbelt premium and kept our water glasses full. we ordered two juicy lucy burgers. one with and one without onions. we ordered a half basket of fries. as we waited in line, the fries looked and smelled awesome. they are the thin style of french fries. then the wait begins. 25 minutes later our food arrives.

a note to parents, this is not the place to bring children. first, it is abarfull of adults who are drinking and speaking like adults speak. second there is not much room for strollers. finally, kids need food now and cry as they wait. they will have plenty of time to cry as it is a long wait for food. i read a sign at the door saying matt's bans the use of e-cigs. they should also ban children. get a sitter. bringing your children is unfair to the kids and the patrons. and they do not have a kiddie menu!

when the burgers arrived the smell was beyond words. they were so good that ketchup and mustard would have ruined the flavor. i do not recall the last time i had a burger where the quality of the meat and how it was prepared, tasted this good. amazing. the $6.50 burger was worth it. here is my suggestion how to eat your food. enjoy the fries first while they are hot and give your burger time to cool down before you bite into the hot cheese center. my guess is that many patrons leave with a burnt mouth. the fastest part of the experience was eating. by the time the food arrives you are hungry and the long line at the door gives you the feel that someone needs your seat. the tab for two juicy lucy burgers (they also offer less expensive burgers, grilled cheese and a chicken sandwich), a half order of fries which was plenty for two people and two tap beers was $22. the place is small, but large enough so you do not feel cramped. i am glad to have experienced the best juicy lucy ever. it is better then 5-8 or blue door. it is an original. no frills and perfectly prepared. would i go back? doubtful. while the food was great, the circus like environment is not something i enjoy when i am dining out. if you have never been to matt' bar, you must go. you will have a wonderful time. you will be in many pictures as smartphones are recording and taking pictures constantly.

too jucy. my wife and i went by matt’sbaron a trip through minneappolis to try their famed jucy lucy. we found matt's buried deep in a residential neighborhood in a new looking building on a corner. we were able to park on the street right next to the front door. once inside, we were found the quintessential hole in the wall burger joint. it was small but packed with a noisy crowd of socializers. after a wait in line of 10 min or so, we were seated in a booth that could hold four, so we invited the couple (traveling business associates from connecticut) who had been in the line behind us to join. they did and we had an enjoyable evening of food and fellowship.
our service was friendly and top notch considering the hectic crowd our waitress had to deal with. we saw none of the service problems in some of the other reviews. our invited lady and i both had the jucy lucy and each couple shared an order of french fries – very large. the burger proved a bit too “jucy” for our lady friend. when she bit into it, the liquidy cheese squirted all over her top, and she was a time cleaning it up. not being a quick learner, i did the same thing a few minutes later. it’s the kind of thing you can avoid if you are expecting it. the burger was good but not award caliber. all in all, most of the other reviews had the place pegged right (except for problems with service): a great neighborhood hang out, good but not great food, generous fries and reasonable prices. my wife and i would go back if we were ever in minneappolis again, but first we would check out their competitor’s “juicy lucy.

jucy lucy, nuff said.. coming from a food service background, the first thing that struck me about this place was how well the staff handled the craziness. upon getting my jucy lucy and 1/2 basket of fries, with beer of course, i was instructed to take a small bite. the food was awesome, the service was top notch, and the divebaratmosphere made me feel completely at home. if you've never had a jucy lucy, get one!
