professional service with amateur cooks. wanted to love it, but just couldn't. the service was excellent, but both mine and my girlfriend's maindish were overcooked. i ordered the strip steak medium rare and she the duck, the same way. both our dishes bordered on well done- way overcooked by any professional standards! such a waste of what i imagine was fantastic locally produced meats.

for old times sake. we visited mateo the last time we were in boulder about 6 or 7 years ago. even though it was way to early for dinner we decided to stop in for a happy hour snack and glass of wine. the fruit and cheese platter was terrific.

if you are looking for a nice little neighborhood place with terrific food and nice people try mateo. its a couple of blocks east of the mall right on cherry street.

fantastic. i love everything about this restaurant. the atmosphere is great -- both outside and inside. the food is innovative and delicious. their wine selection (i.e. by the glass) is great. plus the waiters are super handsome!

ughh. i had been anticipating trying mateo out and finally went for lunch the other day...both of us were unsatisfied - fish was overcooked and the veal bolognese was terribly bland. boring atmosphere, would not recommend.

i went here for my birthday with 3 others, i among the others thought it was crazy expensive for the quality and preparation. 2 of us ordered the steak frites, both ordered medium rare, but when they came to the table, one was almost raw, the other was partly medium and partly raw. the fries were also substandard, the presentation was cutsey in a paper bag, but they were heavily salted and cold. another person got the pappardelle with lamb ragout, which was good, a bit dry but good flavor. the final member had a nightly special of berkshire pork, that was the best of the night, but not memorable. we decided not to get dessert after the lackluster meal. we used a $75 restaurant gift certificate (a birthday present) and still spent $160 on dinner for 4. that might be fine for a pretentious hipster, but for someone who knows and loves food, it was overpriced, underwhelming and generally disappointing.

my favorite currently, this boulder ace gets it right from start to finish. not only does it feel like you're home again, but matthew jansen, chef and co-owner takes you on a culinary journey of old europe (provence specifically) with a touch of altitude.

for all my abiding gastro-italophilia, i remain at gut-level a modern american in 1 crucial way: for me dinner, not lunch, is the crowning meal. i prefer to eat lightly & work hard(ish) all day so that come evening, i can enter into a drunken &/or glutton
