so m'fin gooooood oh ma god. my jesus lord that died for us on that cross and went to heaven must own this joint. i tell you what, them soft shell crabs taste like something the same man that died on that cross must have caught with his (p)fishing net because they is so hot damn good. next in line? thebreadpudding. i swear to earth and my grandkids life that i would live off thatbreadpudding. i wish i lived in the kitchen at mary mahoneys. hell, i might. now, i'm not food connoisseur (obvi since i had to google how to spell it) but i know for a goddamn fact this is the best food ever. meowwww.

i have heard that this was the best restaurant in the area and compares with all the top restaurants in new orleans. i was not impressed with mary mahoneys at all. the salad was a small dish of iceberg lettuce with a tiny slice of tomato. thebreadwas a piece of frenchbreadlike you buy at kroger. their main signature dish had so much worcestershire sauce in it i could barely taste the overcooked shrimp. extremely overpriced as far as the food goes. i guess your paying for the atmosphere of a 300 year old landmark. staff was friendly. have drinks at the bar, read about the history but pass on the food

really great food and service. 5 stars.. the gumbo is the best i've ever had. the salmon with lump crab meat is something i tried and i was glad i did. the flavors are scrumptious together. i always get thebreadpudding for dessert, but i'm sure the other desserts are delicious. i don't think anything can top thebreadpudding though. i enjoyed the history of the building and the servers were very attentive, but not all over you. will be back soon.

great place for a restaurant. i love mary mahoney's atmosphere the ambience is perfect, the food however is another matter. we took out of town guests there over the holidays for lunch. our friends ordered the stuffed snapper. the fish was just fair and the side of étouffé was horrible. i tasted it and it was obviously old and someone had tried revive it with some sort of spice we couldn't identify. bottom line it was not edible and was sent back untouched. i had the fried trout with a side of pasta with crab sauce. the trout was heavily battered and not seasoned well the pasta was gummy the sauce was pasty and i could not find any crab in it. thebreadpudding and coffee were great but hardly made up for the poor entrées. the meal was a disappointment. at this price point folks are looking for freshly prepared food not sides but have been sitting out under a heat lamp. if you're looking for fine dining, keep looking!

don't waste your time or money. the worst meal i have had in years. we had heard glowing reviews from the visitors center in biloxi about this established restaurant. we were quite anxious to enjoy our meal at this historic venue. thankfully we only were there for lunch so didn't get gouged for the overpriced dinner menu. we were seated in the rear glass enclosed room which was very bright and light. sadly the chairs were metal frame and extremely uncomfortable. the salad was mostly iceberg lettuce swimming in the most rancid tasting house vinegarette dressing. it was garnished with a tomato that was hard to distinguish as it was so unripe it was almost white in color. when i sent it back the waiter said he didn't like the dressing either. the snapper had some type of cream and shrimp stuffing. tasteless. the broccoli was completely limp and so overlooked it was almost yellow in color. most of the fish dishes are served with crawfish étouffée over pasta. it wasn't too bad, but the spiciness of the dish is a terrible combination with a delicate shrimp dish. my husband had the gumbo which he liked and it had plenty of shrimp in it. thebreadwas the best part of the meal. fresly baked and still warm. this restaurant is sadly in need of a total makeover. the menu is from the 70s. the service is very poor and slow. the prices are outrageous for such poor quality food and service.

lived up to it's reputation. while recently on the coast for business meetings, a small group of us took in lunch at mary mahoney's. this was my first time dining at the landmark establishment in several years and i think i came away more impressed than i was before. ordering from the lunch menu i selected the stuffed flounder. this is one of my all time favorite dishes. when served it was a very nice whole flounder stuffed with a large portion lump crab meat stuffing with a side of steamed broccoli. their frenchbreadis a compliment to all of the entrees.

my stuffed flounder was excellent, broiled to near perfection and the crab stuffing was top notch.

we finished it off with a nice, but not memorablebreadpudding.

my wife and dined here on a thursday night. the staff was attentive and service was swift.
we both had the stuffed snapper. it was outstanding. the fish is served with a side order of crayfish étouffée over pasta. it was good but a bit unusual. it was more of a red gravy rather than a roux.
this came with a dinner salad with homemade dressings. blue cheeses and thousand island were very good. we also received warmbreadand a side vegetable. price $36 each entree. total bill, 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine, 1 mixed drink,1 dessert, 1 coffee, tax=$110.
tip: walk around the building to get the feel of the building and the court yard. you are walking back in time. as you open the door to the restaurant look over your right shoulder. read the small white sign attached the second story floor.
enjoy;-)

pay attention to the mid to low reviews. sadly, this is not a very good restaurant anymore. no axes to grind, but if you appreciate well prepared food at any price you will be disappointed. case in point: the "famous"breadpudding is mush. i wish they could recover from decades of undeserved accolades but the tourists will probably keep them going until competition just wipes them out. don't believe me? then just go there. only good thing to say is that waiter "greg" is excellent.

greatbread. mediocre food. being from the big easy i know good food and it isnt here. the so called home made dressings should have tipped me off right away. kraft makes a better dressing. my wife ordered the signature dish, lobster giorgio . boy it was an impressive looking dish. looking is the key word here . there was evidence of lobster but no real lobster meat in the dish . plenty of shrimp though, but not delicious tasty ms. gulf coast shrimp. more like the tasteless shrimp one would find at a chinese buffet, the sauce i would swear was made with cambells cream of mushroom soup. no flavor whatso ever. how can a lobster dish be bad? . the filet was so-so at best. no demi glace or any other sauce to compliment the filet. the food came out so quickly i suspect the entrees were prepared earlier in the day and just placed in the broiler. on a good note thebreadwas very good as was the service . but i am not willing to pay a hundred dollars for a loaf of frenchbreadserved well .

good news and ok news. not bad; but not knock your socks off. worth the visit to get out of the hotels. i would come back but average new orleans cooking. spices and heat are very soft, adding hot sauce is a must.breadpeople will love the bread. if you are thinking about eating i would suggest yes go for it.

maybe we didn't order well. our food was fine but not as special as people made it out to be. the service was excellent. the building was interesting. etoufee was good too even if the crawfish were a bit rubbery, but the etoufee wasn't super oily and buttery the way it is sometimes served.

but the stuffed flounder was not good. it had a weird cream sauce that made it taste like scalloped potatoes. it seemed like a weird 70's hot dish. i could barely tell that it was seafood. i wanted fresh flounder with the taste of shrimp and crawfish. i didn't get that.

tuna salad was nothing special but i don't think our friend should have ordered that.

ourbreadpudding was disgusting. the alcohol tasted like rubbing alcohol.

stuffed snapper - served with crawfish etouffee over pasta. stuffed snapper- snapper fillet filled with shrimp & crabmeat sauce served with crawfish etouffee over pasta

i took my wife to mary mahoney's for her birthday. we both love it and enjoy meeting there for lunch with friends. i usually get a bowl of seafood gumbo as an appetizer and get the stuffed snapper as my main entree. the gumbo was literally brimming with fresh gulf shrimp and really hit the spot. we also enjoy their homemadebreadand butter which comes with the meal and we normally finish withbreadpudding or a sherbet dessert which also comes with the meal. the stuffed snapper is my personal favorite but my wife usually get's the stuffed shrimp.

-----16 feb, 2011-----

i went to lunch with some business colleagues from out of town who wanted to sample the local seafood cuisine. we got a private area for lunch. i normally get the stuffed snapper (snapper fillet filled with shrimp & crabmeat sauce served with crawfish etouffee over pasta). since i get that all the time, i decided to get another variation of the snapper. i just got the broiled snapper served with crawfish etouffee over pasta. it comes with a veggie (they served green beans today. it varies because sometimes you get carrots or something else). it also comes with a small salad with your choice of dressing. i ordered a cup of gumbo for a starter and as usual, the gumbo was spot on. their gumbo is in the top 3 on the ms gulf coast in my opinion. everyone commented that the gumbo was brimming with shrimp (there were at least 5 good sized shrimp in the cup i received.) the service was a bit slower than i have experienced in the past. we had a table of 10 people and only one waiter so that may have added to the wait time. the food was well worth it. the snapper i received was cooked to perfection. it was tender and spiced just right and was very good. i am very particular about eating fish and their snapper has always been a good fit for my palette. the etouffee over pasta was also very good. there were plenty of crawfish in my portion and i love their angel hair pasta. you get a choice of sherbet orbreadpudding with whisky sauce for desert. everyone ordered thebreadpudding except for 3 people who wanted the mississippi mud (they were out, so the 3 each ordered a slab of chocolate cake instead which they said was very good.) mybreadpudding was warm and yummy. i really enjoy going to mary mahoney's. i normally only go for lunch because the prices are twice as much at dinner time for pretty much the same dishes and the same portions.

i'd go back.. good food, good service. not the 'to die for' place that some folks seem to think it is, but certainly a cut above the average restaurant. my only disappointment was thebreadpudding. i expected an expertly executedbreadpudding given the location and atmosphere, but it was marginal at best. spend your desert calorie budget on the ms mud pie instead.
