would’ve been 5 stars as the food was really good.

3 small problems:
1. food was not served together with sauces (sauces came too late and were not explained)
2. ac was too warm/hot which is below expectations.
3. it was a really noisy because of the servers washing and drying dishes (exposed kitchen). not “homey” at all for a home kitchen and this shouldn’t be the case for establishments of this calibre.

but still, food was incredibly superb and at a whole other level compared to other restos. pricey but the quality makes up for it. service is great as should be.

mamou's branch here in serendra has been around for awhile now and i never bothered dining here, since i thought it would be like those overpriced restaurants that would just leave you unsatisfied. well, i guess i was wrong. mamou is indeed one of the best restaurants here, and i'm happy that i got the chance to dine here along with some foodie friends.

i was also glad to know that mamou was a family style restaurant, since those types of restaurants for me, were always the key to a good and successful food business. mamou treats their dishss like family and all the love and care that they put into their food will just remind you of nothing else but home.

their menu had a wide range of amazing choices, so we just had their highly recommended dishes just to make things easier for us.

we had the:

🔲 healdsburg's harvest🔲 (334 php)

[greens in season, sweet tomatoes, glazed pecans, dried cranberries, cranberry stiltion cheese, berry vinaigrette]

i always look forward for the right balance of sweet, tangy and salty flavors in a salad and i believe mamou's healdsburg's harvest salad has given me that. the sweetness from the glazed pecans and tomatoes, the tanginess from the dried cranberries and the saltiness from the stilton cheese along with the fresh greens were like an explosion of different flavors and textures in my mouth. i enjoyed it a lot and i highly reccomend it to those who are big fans of salad.

🔲 lorenzo's truffle cream🔲 (395 php)

[spaghettini, truffle flavored cream, grana padano cheese]

at first the glance, the pasta looked really plain and simple, but once you take a bite of it, you can really taste the truffle flavor coming from the cream. the pasta was al dente and coated lightly in the truffle infused cream so it wouldn't be too heavy and rich. the cheese on top gave it a nice slight saltiness as well, making it even more enjoyable,

🔲 mamou's linguine vongole 🔲 (365 php)

[linguine, white clam sauce]

another simple looking but flavorful pasta dish from mamou. the pasta was again, al dente and the sauce had a strong seafood flavor. there were generous amounts of clam as well and they were all seasoned consistently.

🔲 angus ribeye usda prime grade steak single approx. 400 g/14 oz 🔲 (1950 php)

although the steak will take about 20 minutes, it is definitely worth the wait. i never had steak that was extremely juicy and tender before, and the best part is, the steak melts as soon as it reaches your tongue. the steak also had a very good char, giving it a slightly crisp exterior and appetizing dark brown color. just remember to save the small charred bits in the end to savour its wonderful flavor.

🔲 roast pork and chicken 🔲 ( half - 365 php/ to share - 665php)

[mamou's citrus rubbed pork and chicken, buttered onions, white/red cuban rice, cinnamon saba, black beans *all pork or all chicken also possible)

the roast pork and chicken was my personal favorite. i love the fusion of the different citruses and how it was applied onto the chicken and pork. it gave both meats a sweet and tangy flavor after roasting, making it really enjoyable after every bite. the idea of making it into a cuban like dish was incredibly smart. the meat together with the black beans, cuban rice and cinnamon saba was indeed a harmony of delicious flavors and textures in my mouth. definitely ordering this again when i come back.

🔲 key lime pie with "schlagsahne" 🔲

i love desserts, especially sour ones. mamou's signature key lime pie was so heavenly good that i could eat a whole pie in one sitting. i enjoyed the creamy lime filling a lot and the crust really helped in giving extra texture. also, don't forget to smother a lot of that "hard to pronounce" whipped cream, making this guilty dessert even guiltier!

overall, i really enjoyed my dining experience here in mamou. it surely is an ideal place for those who love hearty and reasonable comfort food that will remind you of nothing else but home. i hope to come back to mamou, with my family this time, and experience mamou's warm welcome again soon.

i love mamou. their lorenzo truffle cream pasta is just to die for. you'll never get enough of it. the ribeye is flavorful, but i wish they would season it a little more. you can season it yourself, but they serve you rock salt, so it's not really evenly distributed. i've tried mamou in rockwell and in serendra. i like the ambiance in rockwell better. it's better to eat it there than to order take out because ribeye and the truffle cream pasta are served with oil and you wouldn't eat it at it's best version if you take it out. some people find mamou to be quite expensive, but i vouch that it's worth every penny.

[warning: long review ahead]

ever since stepping foot in the philippines, i’ve yet to taste a truly delicious and well-prepared steak; something reminiscent of the ones i used to enjoy back in the good ol’ u.s. of a. however, mamou was a name that always popped up among the top steakhouse lists in the metro. ever since then, i’ve been wanting to visit mamou and finally, the time came to call them up and make a reservation.

the items we ordered were the mamou’s greens, lorenzo’s truffle cream pasta, bone-in ribeye, and the key lime pie for dessert.

starting the meal off with the salad, mamou’s greens, the girlfriend and i both agreed it was substandard. bitter greens, maybe only 3 or 4 cherry tomatoes, and a bland vinaigrette to top it all off. we were also served complimentary bread to accompany our salad. however, to my surprise, the bread came out steamy and damp. a sign that the bread was probably microwaved. as i bit into the bread i became even more suspicious as it was very chewy and spongy.

at this point, we’ve only gotten through the appetizers and our meal is already starting out on the wrong foot.

the next dish to arrive is the truffle cream pasta and it couldn’t have come any sooner. many recommended this dish and i now see why: the pasta itself is cooked perfectly al dente. the cream sauce is very rich and yet not overly heavy and finishes with a subtle taste of truffle. a great dish, we just wished there was more of it on the plate.

next, the dish i’ve been waiting so long to taste: our dry aged usda prime bone-in rib eye steak. we were recommended to get our steak cooked to a ”medium rare” doneness and yet when it arrived, it was a bit more on the rare side. not a huge deal, but when you pay this much for a dish, little things can leave a big impression. also, i’ve noticed a few tendencies here at steakhouses in the philippines. one is how they like to serve your steak to you already cut. something i personally don’t like but it’s whatever since it’s going to get cut up one way or another. another is how they like to serve your steak in a puddle of the oil they used to cook the steak. this is something i find pointless and unappetizing.

overall, i liked the steak.

however, i’m not trying to start a fight here but i have my doubts that the steak we were served was a usda prime grade steak. biting into the meat, there was no richness of fat that’s present in a prime grade piece of beef. also, the beef flavor alone was very lacking. i know i’m being very critical but again, when you pay almost 4k for a piece of meat you expect it to be a very high quality piece of meat.

last but not least, the key lime pie ended the meal off on a high note. perfectly balanced with the right amount of sweetness to tart and the pie filling consistency was smooth and velvety.

i enjoyed mamou and would like to come back here in the future, like long-term future. but for now, it looks like the search for that perfect steak continues…

pros
-service here is top-notch. a lot of times before we even asked, a server would come by to check on us if we needed anything.

cons
-be prepared to spend…a lot.
-serving sizes here can be underwhelming.

dining at mamou's feels like visiting tita malou's (owner) home. we were warmly welcomed by her sister if i could remember her name was tita annie? she was like so busy assisting us and making sure that we would be comfortable and to give us some of their signature dishes and introduced how the restaurant started. it was a family history back then and for me, family is a good foundation of building a restaurant. i could already imagined how good their home cooked dishes are. so here are the dishes that we've tried:

healdsburg's harvest - freshness and colorful flavours in a bowl definitely would boost your appetite to start off your meal. honestly i'm not used to eat salads with berries but mamou made me appreciate it. i like how this salad permeate strong flavours and texture that came from the pecans, sweet tomatoes, cranberry stilton cheese and vinaigrette.

lorenzo's truffle cream - this is a perfect example of something that is plain-looking yet extraordinary as it taste. like most italian versions they also focuses more on the quality of the pasta and just flavored it with few ingredients that made the lovable scent and taste of their truffle pasta.

mamou's linguine vongole - just like their truffle pasta it is light and simple yet it tasted so good i really liked how the cream, saltiness and the seafood flavour of the clam worked well together.

roast pork and chicken - the pork and the chicken was juicy as it looks. it has a dynamic flavour made by the rubbed citrus that gave the dish a savory and zesty flavour.

angus ribeye usda prime grade steak - oohh lala in plate!!! it was perfectly cooked. i could still remember how i loved every single bite of it. it was so juicy and tender and it was seasoned well.

key lime pie with "schlagsahne" - for me, this is the best lime pie in manila, it is creamy and tangy. there was this perfect balance of sweetness from the crust, sour and creaminess from the filling and the whipped cream w/ the german term schlagsahne. haha.

i really love what mamou gave us, overall experience it was indeed great from the feel at home ambiance to the warm assistance of the owner and the staff and to their dishes were every family members would love. i will definitely suggest this to our next dine out with my family. ❤

well, we cant find the restaurant at first because it was covered with a large umbrella and the place is just a small one. it took us around 5 minutes to look for it. so we found it and i can tell it is a fancy restaurant and the servers were so formal as well.  i like the place and the coziness it brings. we ordered the salmon dish they had. and yes, the salmon, one of the best salmon dish i have ever tasted. it just melts in your mouth. must try again this soon. my number to go to place when you're craving for a very delicious salmon dish.  :)

we were expecting a great steak given the price of it. they served us a wrong steak although they found out right away and gave us the right one. the steak was tender but it doesn't taste anything. the spinach side dish taste better than the steak. in addition, i wish that the staff were more attentive as it took them 7 waves for them to noticed us outside.

i had my first lunch today at early bird, and now, second lunch was at mamou in serendra. merry and pippin would be proud. i have dined at mamou several times, and it’s always been a classic favorite whenever i want a really good home-cooked meal with no fancy-fancy frou frou. just good food, home-style, but nice. like a meal from a favorite aunt who loves to cook. i guess that’s why even after several meals there, i have not blogged about it until today. it’s where i want to go when i feel nostalgic for good home cooking.

mamou has been part of my must-try list. and the list has been gathering dust somewhere. for some odd reason whenever i plan or list down stuff, it doesn't pan out. yeah, i am one of those who suck at planning and doesn't know the meaning of "follow through"

i always end up crossing off a restaurant on my list by sheer coincidence. what happened last tuesday was proof, i finally got to dine at mamou.

coincidence, right? or maybe i'm lucky or whatever.

mamou has been around for quite sometime and i am probably part of the bottom percentile of the foodies who hasn't tried it yet. i have heard rave reviews about how
awesome their food is. and i gotta say every rave and praise is.......absobloodylutely true!

| healdsburg harvest (php 335). a bowl full of fresh greens mixed with glazed pecans, dried cranberries, cranberry stilton cheese tossed in berry vinaigrette. i know how a good salad looks like and this is probably one of them. why didn't i try it, you ask? well....i ain't one of those who only eats salad. the pasta is too darn appetizing to skip.

mamou's linguine vongole (php 365). wow! this is one takes the crown, move over tratorria altrove (i mean that lovingly, your vongole is still awesome but mamou stole my heart). the vongole is perfect, a classic italian dish done with expertise and technique. i felt like i was having lunch at sicily.

lorenzo's truffle cream (php 395). it doesn't look much but it delivers in the olfactory and taste department. the aroma of the truffle is inviting and teases your senses. the marriage of truffle cream and grana padano cheese is a match made in pasta heaven. the sharpness of the cheese works well with truffle and it brings a distinct flavor to the pasta.

roast pork and chicken (half php 365, to share php 655). mamou's citrus rubbed pork and chicken, buttered onions, red cuban rice, cinnamon saba and black beans. this dish is a revelation for me. why? i steer clear away from red rice and black beans on any given day because i don't like the texture and me and black beans are not meant for each other. but mamou made it possible for me to appreciate both. it is proof that when expertise is in the equation red rice and black beans can impress a non-believer. and let us not forget how tender and flavorful the meat is!

angus ribeye usda prime grade steak (single php 1950, twin php 3490). this is the highlight of our meal! when they say it is medium rare, they meant it. the meat is super tender and flavorful. i loved every single bite.

key lime pie with schlagsahne (php 235). i like key lime pie, i even wrote a lengthy review on how i got acquainted with this florida native (if you have time, read my round robin cafe review).

there are limited dessert places that offer this and sadly most of them failed in the taste department. well, i am happy to report that mamou has the best key lime pie ever (emphasis on "ever"). i like the fact that they toned down the tart and it has minimal sweetness. this is a slice of heaven on a humid day.

mamou! you knocked my socks off! you deserve every rave review.

peace out

~reich

lorenzo's truffle cream made you want for a pasta with just the noodles and the sauce, no meat, no veggies, just the sauce/cream. the place is too crowded at night and would encourage you to take home the food instead.

i will never stop posting a picture of their lorenzo’s truffle pasta because it. is. the. bomb. as in. best ever truffle pasta. ❤️ and beside it? something new this time: roast pork and chicken, which came with caramelized onions on top, and saba slices (banana 🍌) that were cooked in sugar and cinnamon with a light toasted char that crunches— like biting into the top of a creme brûlée. 🤤 side dishes that came with this order included corn pudding (basically creamed corn 🌽) and rice 🍚. meat was cooked with a delicate mix of spices (probably detected some cumin in it) for a tangy and smoky barbecue flavor. ❤️ definitely a must-have! 🙌🏻

come home to great italian cooking! mamou features a wide array of italian cooking, inducing comfort and a lot of heart. ❤️ mamou's ambiance is a mix of elegance and comfort, inviting you in to enjoy the italian feast, family style.

for mother's day, mamou has showcased the following dishes for us to indulge on:

healdsburg's harvest (salad in berry vinaigrette)
lorenzo's truffle cream
mamou's linguine vongole
angus ribeye usda prime grade steak
roast pork & kitchen
key lime pie with "schlagsahne"'

the dishes that stood out for me the most was the linguini vongole-- very light, well-balanced, and seasoned just right. the pasta was al dente, the sauce it was cooked in was very creamy, complimenting the fresh shell fish it was cooked in. their angus ribeye usda prime grade steak also was a true winner! cooked medium rare, the steak was juicy and seasoned just right, it is served with beef cracklings on top, adding in a kiss of salty and peppery flair. a true headturner, their key lime pie with "schlagsahne"' was the sweet note needed to end the symphony of flavors mamou has to offer. the filling was smooth and creamy. the tart and refreshing dessert is best served cold, with a spoonful of cream it was served with.

hopefully you'll remember to visit mamou. she's all you need to fill your heart with her soulful food.

a day of family and food. a day of celebration.

i woke up feeling like it's just another day, one... two... three... then i remembered, it was my day. my whole family was still asleep as i began with my morning ritual, after which i headed to my home office, and plopped on my black computer chair.

in my mind, i was planning the day's activities, albeit it wasn't so much about what to do rather than where to eat. i love food is stating the obvious. and celebrating my birthday is the perfect excuse to eat where i want without the guilt of considering if my companions would enjoy the restaurant choices i make for the day.

two things i know for sure -- i'm hankering for a hunky piece of steak, and no, i don't want to do buffet. being a food blogger, surely i wouldn't be able to resist taking photos of the whole spread, and i just wanted to have a leisurely lunch and dinner.

i've been planning on going back to mamou for quite some time. admittedly, the first time i dined there wasn't too much of a good experience, and i blamed that on poor dish choices. i vowed to try their famous steaks the next time i visit, and i was adamant to do it now.

the light drizzle had already stopped by the time my handsome date and i arrived at serendra. with my hand tucked into the crook of my husband's arm, i slowly walked across the piazza, sidestepping large rain puddles, careful not to soil my new wedges.

inside the red-themed restaurant were several empty tables, which were soon occupied by the time we started eating. it's always best to have reservations when dining at mamou. we opted for steak and pasta. i also wanted to try the rb foie gras open faced sandwich, unfortunately, i knew that with such heavy dishes, there was no way i could stuff that one into my stomach as well. another time, then.

the smell of truffle was so apparent the moment the waiter laid this down on the table. with such heady perfume so near my nose as i was taking close-up shots of the dish, i suddenly didn't care if i took a satisfactory shot of it or not. all i wanted was to twirl it around my fork and put it instantly into my mouth. no meat, not even a trace of mushroom to be seen. it's forgivable if one might be dubious of its stellar popularity based on looks alone. but, we don't eat with just our eyes.

omg! was all i could say for the first few seconds or so. why only now?! i silently berated myself for not having tried this dish sooner. the spaghettini were cooked al dente; the truffle flavored cream just divine. shavings of grana padano cheese topped the creamy---both in color and texture---heap. it was just so rich, so bold a flavor, that i couldn't help but sigh in ecstasy. looks can be deceiving; trust me, there's nothing simple about this exquisite dish.

heaven on a plate! best steak in recent memory. very tender (and juicy) angus ribeye drenched in oil with a splattering of toasted fat bits. i feared that the char on the strips would have an awful burnt taste, but thank goodness it did not. it was so flavorful, i wanted to cry in delight. no need for steak sauce, though one is provided on the side, along with some sea salt. i did try putting a little of that just for the heck of it, albeit i liked it a lot better on its own.

for the sides, we chose mashed potatoes and white steak rice, which is rice bathed in the steak's fat drippings, and we chose well. other sides include red steak rice, which uses brown rice, corn pudding and creamed spinach.

i loved our lunch at mamou. it was a far cry from the last time at rockwell. very good choice, if i do say so myself.

next stop: alabang, to meet up with my daughters, my parents, and my brother. we were planning on a late dinner so an afternoon snack was a must. after about a decade of not visiting, café breton suddenly became one of our go-to places whenever that midday craving sneaks in.

i remember how my best friends and i would spend countless afternoons with a plate of crepe (sometimes two, and usually la pinay), and share stories about our college life. café breton, at that time, was still located at the 2nd floor of corte de las palmas in atc -- our second home. then it closed down and moved to westgate, which was less accessible, so that was that.

it was only when we found ourselves one day inside westgate some time late last year, that we decided to indulge in their crepes once again. all it took is one bite for us to realize that we must not let another decade, nor another year, nor even several months pass without treating ourselves to these delicious french pancakes.

this one was pretty simple, with slices of bananas and condensed milk inside this folded crepe. a scattering of powdered sugar completed the dish. my baby's yaya kept on going how she could make a similar one at home. we may not be able to create a crepe of equal quality, but a very thin pancake batter would suffice. and it did actually, when she made some the very next day, haha. but that won't stop me from going back; i will, however, choose to order crepes with more complex fillings for my kids next time.

we've also tried a couple more crepes on other occasions, one of which was savory. the excalibur had a treasure of ham, emmental cheese, fresh cream, and asparagus spears, sauteed with onions and mushrooms. it was good, but after a few bites, i suddenly yearned for some meat. the a la nutella had this hazelnut chocolate spread on top of the crepe with a sprinkle of powdered sugar. too sweet for my taste, but my daughter liked it. well, she loves nutella so no surprise there.

and the best crepe of them all -- la pinay. i think this will be my forever café breton staple. not that other crepes are not worthy of note. it's simply a matter of unwilling to risk ordering a different kind, only to end up regretting not eating this best seller of theirs. so unless i have someone with me who willingly orders a french crepe variant surprisingly more delectable than this, i'm afraid you're stuck with me, french buddy.

chunky pieces of chicken was used in the salad, which was then smeared on a bed of lettuce and asparagus. i wished their asparagus spears were bigger, kinda like the ones in pancake house's chicken asparagus sandwich; the better to enjoy them. nonetheless, this was pretty okay, and the light salad on the side was a nice touch.

their spaghetti was good, nothing extraordinary, but enough to satisfy a simple craving for comfort food. i have to say, still way better than fast food spaghetti.

juicy beef patty with melted mozzarella, all covered with button mushrooms. as with their other snacks and sandwiches, it was pretty good, but nothing mind-blowing that you would actually crave for it. oh, and the side salad was again a nice touch.

overall café breton is a good one-stop shop for your little sweet and savory cravings. they have rootbeer float and they serve coffee, so yeah, i'm fine with that.

after a little malling and shoe shopping, it was time for dinner. and despite what i had already consumed, i felt famished.

for several months now, i've been eyeing this restaurant. it's near our place so i would pass by it as i bring my daughter to school, go to church or to the mall. the fact that it had these mouthwatering photos of steak and burger plastered on their windows only increased my determination to finally check it out.

the farm resto prides itself in serving only certified organic beef products that come from the farm organics. i don't have much experience when it comes to eating organic food, so i wasn't sure what to expect. i did know though, that they could be more pricey since the volume produced is smaller, and production costs are typically higher since they use alternative production processes. i'm about to find out that this isn't always the case.

we started with a salad. i was a bit disappointed to see only four pieces on the plate. that was soon forgotten the moment i took in a blob of melted kesong puti drizzled with olive oil (?), sandwiched between a basil leaf and a slice of tomato. lovely!

oh my! the bone marrow was so rich and just bursting with flavor. not to mention quite deadly, too. i hated the fact that if you scraped the whole thing off the bone, you'd find just a small amount, much smaller than you would like. but, looking at it on a positive note, i think it's just right lest you might find yourself visiting your doctor soon enough.

with the burgers being tiny, p130 a pop did look pretty expensive. my daughters, especially my older one finished hers though, and that says a lot 'coz she is one picky eater. her only complaint was that the top bun had burnt grill marks, but she certainly enjoyed the beef patty and cheese. to quote: "it was so yummy, mom!"

now that, is a burger. simple, no frills, yet the goodness is apparent. unfortunately for me, i didn't even get the chance to take one measly bite. i was assured it was really good, though. yeah, right, as if that description would be enough to make me feel better. i knew i should have cut a piece after taking a shot of it, before i handed over the wooden board it sat on.

the steak wasn't tough, albeit it wasn't as tender as i would have preferred. the flavor was there, though it could use more. or perhaps, this nitpicking was a result of just having had mamou's steak earlier that day, so comparison was pretty much a given.

my mom enjoyed this one immensely, her hogging the whole platter after my dad and i grabbed just half a piece each proved that point. it was large, for crying out loud! supposedly good for two people at the very least. but no, she wouldn't budge. even if it was my birthday. i had to order another, and i opted for the tenderloin to try something different.

this was a lot more tender than the rib-eye, although a bit blander as well. even the accompanying mashed potatoes had more salty-savory flavor than the steak. but nothing a little steak sauce can't fix, if they have one. i actually hadn't thought about asking, i was too busy scarfing down the strips. i told you i was hungry.

i'm not sure if they do that on purpose, lessening the seasonings or marinade or something, because when i asked the servers what the difference was between their three steaks---rib-eye, new york, and tenderloin---they straight up told me that the rib-eye was the flavorful one, the new york was the lean cut, and the tenderloin was the most tender. i'd be happy if they had one that's both flavorful and very tender. never mind the lean part, give me all that fat! on second thought, the salt and black pepper on the table may be an indication that they let diners season the meats according to their taste.

i'm not a fan of dense cakes, but this was different. it was rich, but had the decency not to be cloying. the strawberries were clustered toward the center of the cake, but the flavor lingered all the way to the back. it was so good! with a little shame, i handed the sorry-looking remnant back to my brother (it was his order), who repaid me with an if-looks-could-kill face. and if it weren't my birthday, i'd say that idea wouldn't be so remote.

admittedly, i was initially shocked to see that our total bill set us back several thousands of pesos. in hindsight though, when i carefully thought about it, the prices were okay considering the food was organic. the average price per person turned out to be about p500; some had steaks, some had burgers. if all of us had steak, raising it to about p600-p800 average, it would still be considered a steal compared to other steakhouses. and when you think about how it's better for your body, then that's a major plus.

thank you, lord, for a family-filled, food-filled, fun-filled day!
