wrap that wrap up to go.. every once in a while, a group of us at work go out on an extended lunch excursion. on one of these excursions one of my coworkers introduced us to a little hole in the wall lebanese place called mama's bakery. having visited it i now usually make my way there at least once a week. they serve a wide variety of mediterranean fare, but my staple when i go there is the manakeesh. i usually get a manakeesh plus combo with sides of grape leaves and falafel. there fare consist of traditional lebanese dishes, wraps, salads, savory pies and various entree plates. they've also got a variety of desserts, including multiple types of baklava.

this was such a unique little place. you queued up to a small window, attached to a kitchen where you placed your order. the menu was really simple and easy to read, right in front of you above the head of the person taking your order. (that's how it used to be). anyway, i rarely veered from my typical order of a garlic sausage (sujuk) wrap made with fresh flatbread, tahini sauce, pickles, tomato and lettuce. it was so good, sometimes i would order two, and then feel sick because i was too full. they had this great little shady, semi-open place to eat your food in, kind of like the porch of a beach shack, minus the water and sand. it was one of those places you were praying would make enough money to stick around for a while, and it did…looking forward to hitting it up next time i'm in san diego.

hits the spot. mama's is like a tiny piece of san francisco's mission district that wound up in san diego. don't be put off by its unassuming appearance. this family run business produces great food at good price without a lot of fuss. i am partial to the baba ghanouj, manakeesh (wrap), beef shawarma plate, and baklava, but you can hardly go wrong. san diego needs more places like this.
