thisplacehas so much potential to be a rocking community hub. they have the café market cornered on the ever-gentrifying st. paul st. so maybe they don't think they need to try? super slow cashier/order taker- they seem sleepy or bored. the food: i ordered a grilled cheese/salad combo (with "seasonal" fruit on salad.) the gc was dry and sad- who makes a gc dry on a panini press except tim hortons? the salad was meh- the "seasonal" fruit was sad squishy strawberries in autumn. i guess that could be seasonal considering the strawberries seemed like they were saved in the back of the fridge from june when they're actually in season. i expected apples or pears but should have asked. music is low and muffled. atmosphere is a disorganized amalgamation the mgmt must think exuded "hipster coffeehouse" but really just says they don't care. super slow wifi doesn't help. whatevs. it's a coffeehouse. the gross food is really what prompted me to review. it's a shame- to murder a grilled cheese like that. blasphemy!

chai latte heaven. my friend introduced me to their chai latte and now i cannot drink it elsewhere. it is just that good creamy and fluffy yet spicy, it makes other places seem so watery.

i enjoy the atmosphere at mahtay, especially the old bohemic style they used to have with all odd chairs and paintings. their style of food and design makes it really cosy. i agree with the others that it is a bit sparse on seating, but i also believe that changing it will make it too full and remove the feel it has. the new furnatures unfortunatly removed some of that feel :/

it is my number oneplaceto just go relax, have a chai and perhaps study. many of my study group meetings have been held here and it has worked great. i think i have been lucky avoiding the busy times and i have only always had cute nice guys serve me that makes you feel welcome and homy.

i think i have been lucky and just haven't had the bad servers, but i do recognize some of the other peoples comments about it as i have seen the girl in the back of the cafe and she doesn't seem as welcoming to those not matching the "required style"

i really want to like thisplacebut... each time something puts me off. when i ask questions about the drink/food menu, on multiple occasions the staff acts like they don't know the menu or like it's a chore to answer simple questions - like clarifying what the featured holiday drink is - you should know this! i like the featured art on the walls. once i met friends for coffee and we were the only ones chatting and with a silent cafe and no background music, we felt awkward. my chai latte that day was good enough to give theplaceanother chance.

great place. i am a brock student and i enjoy a good cup of coffee every once in a while, i'm not apart of the 'hipster' scene, but i still feel welcome here (sometimes). i only come when the girl with the tattoos is not working as the barista- if your not hispter enough she will make you feel unwelcome and awkward and she is just plain mean!

other then that, greatplaceto check out and defiantly my favourite coffee pace in st. catahrines.

shocking small portions. thought i'd try out someplace new on st.paul street. the interior of thisplacewas really impressive, but that was the only high point. got one of their flatbread pizzas, wasn't expecting for $9 to leave with a 6 inch pizza, no larger than a pillsbury frozen pizza (the kind where you get 4 in a box for five dollars!). this pizza was no larger, and tasted no different than that frozen pizza either. incredibly disapointed after finishing my meal (err, $9 snack?) in less than 10 bites. should have been priced at $4. it's a shame their pricing for food is so disproportionate because it had the potential to be a very good spot.

niagara's best cafe. mathay is the best of what a cafe can offer: great food with local ingredients, an assortment of drinks and a creative decor attract a variety of people. it's aplaceto grab coffee with a friend; to meet a business acquaintance; to work or read alone. it hosts a number of community events and is one of the few places in niagara that encourages an artsy, creative vibe, that "third space" where connections are made and ideas are born. every community should have a mahtay.
