best authentic italian outside italy. are you looking for authentic italian food? look no further, luce’s in san antonio has the best and i mean the best authentic italian cuisine i have come across in the united states. i have traveled to italy at least once a year for the past three years, and enjoyed the beauty of italy its people, as well as their wonderful food. when i visit luce’s i feel like i am back in italy. while all of the food in luce’s is outstanding, joe buonincontri (owner and chef) specializes in the southern italian dishes which are my very favorite. the aroma and taste takes me back to my childhood growing up in brooklyn new york, having dinner on sunday after mass with my family. every italian boy and girl always looked forward to a pasta dinner on sunday with homemade gravy (that’s tomato sauce) sausage and meatballs. this was and is still heaven on earth. so please if you want to know what real italian food is like, visit luce’s, meet joe buonincontri who is always there to greet and speak with his customers and enjoy a real italian dinner. for a real treat, attend one of joe’s “wine dinners”. you will experience not only the best italian food but also the best wines italy has to offer along with an education on wine by a certified wine specialist. i attended one of these on may 5th and i will definitely be back for the next one. i won’t tell you the price he charges per person for this mouth watering extravaganza because i don’t think it is enough. i will tell you he could easily charge $20.00 more than his current price and you will still be getting your monies worth. i hope to see you at the next wine dinner, where you can thank me for recommending luce’s in san antonio for the best italian food outside italy (maybe even inside italy).
thanks joe! my family and i are never disappointed when we visit. see you again soon.

luce - opposite of how my pants fit after eating here. what a snazzy place of a restaurant, in a strip center no less. you can tell from the pictures here that the place is classy and well designed without having an uber-modern, faddish decor. the gazebo roof might need some attention, but the outdoor garden seating area is an unexpected green space in an otherwise concrete jungle of shops.

white tablecloths covered with paper - an efficient and frugal way to deal with red sauce spills, but not the most elegant treatment. complementary fresh bread squares come with basil butter, plain butter and sundried tomato in ricotta cheese spreads to stave off your hunger as your entree is prepared.

an appetizer of arancini was a great choice to begin our lunch. 4 large orbs of breaded and golden fried rice balls with a melted mozzarella center and grated parmigiana on top. spoon on some of the mild bolognese sauce and you have a real winner. salad or soup choice with the meal - we had the caesar. fresh lettuce with a very light dressing. did not detect any anchovy flavor at all though.

the excitement came when the waiter served my wife's lobster ravioli. she's a saucy kind of girl and ordered extra suga-rosa (red sauce with cream). as the waiter tried to serve this molten pool of sauce and pasta, he managed to tip the dish enough such that there was a trail of pink drops that led from a foot away right to my arm and short's leg. hot! while he danced around trying to cool his non-heat proof hand, i wiped the sauce off my arm and shorts - red stain! application of club soda was a lost cause. to his credit, the waiter was thoroughly apologetic and did his best to help with the stain removal.

never-the-less, my wife loved the ravioli with big chunks of lobster and that tasty suga-rosa. my veal piccatta was a little less than stellar. though the meat was tender and nicely piquant with lemon and capers, the garlic seemed to have a little bit of a sharp edge. not unlike the flavor you get when you use elephant garlic vs. regular. i also prefer the dish with lightly egg battered veal medallions. this veal was served "plain" and in one long strip. the accompaniment of sauteed mixed vegetables and roasted rosemary potato hunks were fine. at this point i was just too full to have much of either though.

as we paid the bill, i had expected a visit from the manager, joe, who had witnessed the sauce accident. at minimum, an additional apology would have been nice. at maximum, a discount on the bill, an offer to pay for the cleaning, a drink on the house, or a complementary meal on our next visit would have been appropriate in return for my white columbia shorts that may not recover. not a word as we exited.

plenty of points for atmosphere, service(the waiter was actually very good - overall), and food quality. minus points for customer relationship management..

meh. the food was pretty decent, i went for lunch so the portion sizes were pretty small. it seems like they are trying to pretend to be a "fancy" restaurant. waiter showed up dripping with sweat, you could hear the kitchen everywhere in the restaurant, servicewas sloooow. if you only have an hour for lunch, i would not suggest this place.

i wanted to like this place so badly! the ambiance is very romantic and the location is convenient for me. but theserviceand the food were a let down. we were greeted by the very friendly manager but after he sat us we were ignored for quite a bit. when our server finally showed up he didn't apologize for the delay or even introduce himself. he obviously would rather be doing anything than working on a friday night. our rice balls appetizer was great once they made us a fresh batch (the first ones came out cold in the center). the cocktails were nothing to write home about. that's what i get for ordering a drink in a wine-centric place i guess. as for my main course, the perfectly portioned chicken was very tasty but both sides were cold... the veggies were well seasoned but the risotto was watery and bland. for a few dollars more, we could have gone to piatti's, paesano's, or tre... until this place steps up its game i'll stick to those tried and true italian kitchens.

the margherita pizza was the best i've had in town!! better than dough imho. i liked the crispy, slightly salty crust and the fresh ingredients. the lasagna alla napoletana was just okay but glad i got a chance to try more of their menu.

excellent food and atmosphere. contemporary decor, nice patio area covered by a gazebo, cool wine dining room that can be used for parties and/or work gatherings (has projector and screen, if needed). owner is especially friendly and inviting!servicewas superb. the butternut squash and pumpkin soup was delicate and simple. the caprese was very good - i know it's hard to mess up but the ingredients were fresh. the butternut squash and cheese ravioli were awesome!! they are light and flavorful. not sure i've had sage in much before but it was a strong flavor in a good way. the fresh pastas really make all the difference in the world. it's obvious the pastas are homemade. the ribbon pasta with meat sauce was also made with fresh ingredients and pasta. there were people dressed fairly nicely and others pretty casual and they all fit in. don't expect huge portions here like italian chain restaurants. this is a great example of quality over quantity. i highly recommend this establishment and will be coming back for special (and ordinary) occasions!

unfortunate choice. went for happy hour, buy one app get one free, little did i know both apps. are 1/2 the size of the regular appetizers. drinks were so/so as was theservicebut the nail in the coffin occured when i order the lobster ravioli to go for $23.00 and when i opened it all i saw was 5 ravioli's with a watery sauce nothing else, no bread, veggies, nothing....that was a big disappointment and a big waste of my hard earned money! i won't be going back...ever! i will say that i called to voice my disappointment and the manager stated everything is a la cart but they should have probably included some bread with my order and offered to give me a coupon...not doing it!

large party, mostly all good!. let me preface my review with some needed information...

not the normal dining experience as i was with a large party of 16 and had dinner in their private room. the owner joe and manager rudy did an excellent job in making arrangements. the ambiance was pleasant and mildly sophisticated without being pretentious. we received a warm greeting on entry. i was seated at a simple table, set nicely.

we only had one server for 16 aided by what appears to have been a trainee.servicewas good overall. food delivered hot and mostly at the same time. what the server presented in efficiency, he lacked in a personable nature. (i inject my own preferences of wait staff here perhaps unfairly). the only negative was the long wait to have the bill split out. it took the server approximately 30 minutes after we were done dining to present the bill.

i sampled a wide variety of apps and they were all tasty. notables were the polenta, mussels and rice balls. regular cocktails were well made. i do not recommend the strawberry basil mojito...most thought the basil was overwhelming. the bellini was well received. for dinner i had the valdostana, (sautéed chicken breast, prosciutto, fontina cheese, sage, mushroom demi-glace, fresh egg linguine). everything was, for the most part, fresh and flavorful. presentation was appetizing and portion was perfect. i also sampled several other people's dishes, all reasonably good. others did note that with the lobster ravioli, pasta was undercooked and hard in spots. also, there seemed to be a a consensus that the herbal elements in the various sauces were a bit too strong, sometimes overpowering the overall tastes. most of my group said they generally enjoyed their meals when asked.

the bottom line:
drinks and apps are a "definitely"
dinner - i would say "go try them out"

very good food with questionable service. we had an 8:30 reservation on a tuesday night. we were seated promptly and that was when things got a little weird. the person serving water said he knew nothing about wines and then proceeded to wait the table(wefoun out he had been there 2 weeks). the bread was brought with no butter, and the 3 bread spreads did not arrive until requested. the waiter later told us that the kitchen ran out, but it was clearly straight from the refrigerator. the food was much better and worth a return trip. we ordered 2 appitizers the steamed clams and an order of rice balls, the clams were decent, the rice balls were awsome. rice balls are a rare find and are seldomly done well. the secret here is that they are made with risotto and fantastic red sauce. we then split a very good, though a little tough, with a nice tomato basil cream sauce. no dessert this time. in all dinner was about an hour, an hour and 1/2 would have suited us better, but theserviceseemed somewhat pushed.

a gem.. what a great experience! the atmosphere is classy yet comfortable, the food was incredible, the presentation was 2nd to none and theservicewas on point.

we ordered a bottle of pino noir and settled in for dinner.

started with the ravioli di ricotta with asparagus and butter, the round ravioli served on a stark white square plate decorated with asparagus pieces and melted butter was beautiful and just as tasty.

we were served home baked bread with an assortment of toppings to choose from - whipped butter, cheeses etc. and a crudite type tasting plate with celery, carrots and a tapanade of olives, garlic and eggplant.

hubby then had the pasta fagioli. what a delicious soup! again, served in a stark white dish, brought to the table covered with a lid. the pasta was soft, the tomato broth was comforting and the garlic was very apparant - so best for someone who likes garlic.

we split the gnocchi di gorgonzola and the kitchen sent it split plate. neither of us could finish and we had the remainder of the dish boxed for us.

we ordered the strawberry cheesecake which was out of this world and probably the best italian cheesecake i have had - trumps the italian cheesecake that stole my heart in nyc last month - it was that good!

topped off the night with a magnificent port paired with the cheesecake.

we sat on the patio and had the space all to ourselves. there were four other tables in the intimate dining room when we arrived for dinner at 9pm. by 10:45 when we left we were the last table in the place - they close at 11.

we will definately be back.
