local 44

local 44 is a popular bar for locals and college students alike.  specializing in local beers, the restaurant has a nice selection of seasonal and year-round brews to choose from.  they have a full menu to choose from for food as well, with many options vegetarian.  firstly, i think that their gnocchi is by far my favorite vegetarian dish here.  the pasta is cooked with fresh vegetables in a light sauce, giving a hearty flavor to the pasta.  the seitan nuggets are good and the macaroni and cheese is alright, nothing special.  the quinoa burger is pretty good, but a little dry (make sure to apply some sort of condiment).  i've been here a few times, and each time has been positive.  the staff is helpful and friendly and the prices are reasonable.

great. beer selection is amazing. food is great. have been there many times, everything is usually great. sometimes it is crowded and service can be slower, but that is expected. i would recommend the burgers and sticky wings.

inedible. if you are going to offer terrible vegetarian food don't offer any. their vegan pumpkin mac tasted like flour and the pumpkin was under cooked. it should have been a great simple fall dish but instead it was the only meal i have ever sent back entirely. or at least that is what i tried to do, the server left it sit on our table for the whole meal. i next tried the black bean burger, which i am fairly sure they deep fried. which they did for way to long. it was a crispy flavorless hokey puck. they must also deep fry everything in the same fryer because french fries didn't even taste like potatoes. our server was inattentive and generally seemed uninterested in us from the beginning. to be fair my boyfriend had the shrimp and johnny cake dish and although it isn't enough for dinner he enjoyed it.

more of this in west philly, please!. after being snowed in for a few days we braved the roads and headed out to try local 44. i wanted to be in a dark, cozy place with good beer and good food. it was fairly (though not annoyingly) crowded, so we sat at the bar. i have to say that the bar was surprisingly big/wide, which is a plus...you're not constantly trying to move food items in order to eat without bumping in to anything. burgers were delicious, beer list was good, service was decent. definitely coming back, though would probably avoid it on a typical busy weekend.

great beer, a great happy hour special, and a pub nouveau menu with classics and vegetarian fare make this a gem of a place in west philly. friendly, affordable, happenin'... what's not to love?
